1 The Step 6 June, 2011 It s June already! Only about a month until the 14 th annual BCFA Nimpo Lake! Ink it on your calendar (never mind the pencil) July and come join us for another fun, interesting, fun, informative, & fun adventure. (Did I mention FUN?) We have another awesome agenda this year, lots of food/beverages & door prizes, and over 100 yds. of dock space, a 1600 dirt strip, concrete amphib. ramp, & lots of room to park on top of the ramp. All FREE except the donation for the dinner/dance (live band). But don t forget your cash/cc as we always have a great assortment of useful items on the silent auction table, and BC Floatplane logo apparel you ll be proud to wear. Come in on the Friday to get settled in & acquainted w/some new friends! Saturday ish is the AGM, then lunch (provided) then: The list of speakers/presentations/activities we have after lunch: Wendy Boyes (our Pres) about BCFA Jeff Leahy (new Parks area manager) BC Parks/BCFA Greg Corrado (Washington Seaplanes) flying floats in USA Tom Bass (author) talking about the Alaska Parks cabins Viking Air (Pres/CEO) about the DHC Happy Hour (refreshments provided) BCFA slideshow Silent Auction (donations from generous sponsors & folks) The Famous Feast (more BCFA slideshow & silent auction announcements) Dancing to the Dean River Band (local talent) WILL get your MoJo going. Cora s shuttle van will run several times a day to/from the other local resorts (free to you). Refreshments usually last well into the night! Sunday 0700 Pancake brekky & coffee/bs in the hangar Parks projects meeting 1000 Flyouts & shuttle van back to resorts Sunday night or Monday morning Yellowknife Squadron meeting So far we have about 6 planes planning to go.
2 LOTS of interesting planes/pilots to see/yack with. Last year we had 51 planes, and about 125 folks for dinner, all with good stories. Do plan to come & join us, you will surely take home some new stories yourself! Lots of parking, and still some grass to camp on here, a few cabins still available around the lake, call or write Logan if you need help finding a cabin. Remote lakes improvements We have made plans to purchase picnic tables, square-stern canoes, and possibly 12 rowboats, & thrones for placement in various lakes around the lower mainland & in the interior of BC for your use & enjoyment. Quarry lake (N. of Sechelt) already has a canoe, toilet & picnic table. We will make some modest plaques indicating BCFA s contribution to the enjoyment of popular fly-in lakes. Cameron will expound on this the AGM. If you have a good candidate for a lake that could use some improvements please send details (& ideas) to Cameron. cbf@cbfraser.ca This is one more pro active way to keep our floatplanes in a positive light. WAY TO GO CHARITY!! BCFA s youngest (& likely the prettiest) member has landed her dream job After years of training (& helping out with BCFA projects) and obtaining her Commercial Pilot ticket & Seaplane rating, she is now flying a Cherokee & a C206 on skis &/or floats for Bushland Air in N. Ontario. 200 Pilots applied for that job! One requirement popped up for her that we decided to help with. Pilots there are required to supply their own GPS, so we bought a used one for her and Maxcraft Avionics shipped it to her. We plan to support one deserving young new pilot every year. You can send candidate name/info to membership@bcfloatplane.com for consideration. Kamloops Flying Club Hello all, this may be old news for some but the Kamloops Flying Club is having two Fly-in dates this year.. June 5 pancake++ breakfast 08:00 11:00 to be followed by a COPA for Kids event. The second will be Sept.25, same times and a COPA for Kids event to follow. We have a new Calendar of flying events attached to our website see you there If your club is not on our calendar would you mind sending me an so I can add it and join in the fun... Thanks Blake Farren cj4me@shaw.ca President Kamloops Flying Club
3 BCFA Membership Brenda has reported over 300 BCFA Members for the first time ever. Thanks very much to those of you who have got your friends to sign up, we are growing in numbers, and functionality which is important to our future of float flying (& wheel landing). Without a strong voice we would be losing our freedoms to splash down (or land) nearly anywhere. Thanks to all of you! New Calendar Poster Please remember to send your favorite Floatplane related pictures to Dave Qualley dave@airdave.com as we are planning to make a new background layout for the calendar this year. With very few submissions so far, chances are good that YOUR picture will appear on the new BCFA calendar! BC PARKS is 100 yrs. old This year is BC Parks 100 th birthday! Jerry the Moose (mascot) is bringing Jeff Leahy (the new Area Manager) and a BD cake so we can join in the 100yr. celebrations. Don t miss this, it will be a long time until the 200yr. party! Jeff will be at our AGM to keep us up to speed on BC Parks happenings & express his appreciation for our involvement & partnership. Again, thanks to all who have participated in the various Parks projects. Yellowknife Midnight Sun Fly-in The biannual Yellowknife is happening this year the weekend after our Nimpo weekend, and several of us are planning to fly up there to look around their flatland scenery and take in the fly-in agenda. You can get all the details by writing to Yvonne Quick at: evon@theedge.ca if you are interested in joining us. There are about 6 planes in the group flight from Nimpo so far. We ll have a meeting to discuss plans & provide printouts of our BCFA Flight Supplement prior to setting out. Write to me, logan@xplornet.com if you have any questions or good ideas! BC Bird breeders Atlas The folks at BC Bird Breeders Atlas are still looking for some (floatplane) rides into & out of their remote research areas, they ll reimburse for fuel. Full details are posted on our website, and you can go see their site at: for info on who they are & what they do. Contact info: Christopher Di Corrado (BC Breeding bird Atlas Coordinator) cdicorrado@birdscanada.org; or toll-free
4 COPA 2011 CONVENTION, AGM, & LANGLEY FLY-IN June The 2011 Fly-In AGM will take place at Langley Airport on the weekend of June and will run concurrently with the Langley Aero Club's Annual Fly-In. Float planes welcomed at Fort Langley and Pitt Meadows airports. Aircraft requiring a longer runway are best accommodated at Pitt Meadows with its 4692' runway, 26L-08R. Pitt Meadows is only a few minutes drive from Langley. BCFA Sunday fly-out, to Widgeon Lake for a hot dog BBQ. Full Places to Fly The Places to Fly section of our web site is finally up & running. Several lakes are already listed but the more the better!! Check it out, add your favorite spot(s). Basic info is the lake name/location, GPS co-ords, size & amenities. Lots of room for comments, you can add/edit the info for any lake too! Searchable by names, area, GPS, so if you want to find a good PTF within 200 miles of your dock, or along your route to somewhere, you ll get a list. This will be another positive & very useful addition to our web site. Floatplane Association of BC We ve recently had some confusion between our BC Floatplane Ass n, and the Floatplane Operators Ass n (out of Vancouver). Folks have filled out OUR Member application, and sent their check to the Vancouver Ass n. Please be aware of the similarity in names, and that we are different organizations! Their full name is Vancouver Commercial Seaplane Operators Association. Classified ad (79 Y.O. relinquishing his baby) 1979 C-180K TSN 2836, Eng & Prop 1580, P-ponk , 265hp, 88 gal. fuel, exceptionally clean, always hangared.
