2 Welcome to Atlantic City! The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Fisheries Society looks forward to your visit to the Jersey Shore for the Society s 148th Annual Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ from August 19 23, The meeting planning committee has been working tirelessly to plan an amazing conference, with a multitude of opportunities for everyone to get their fill of science and policy, networking, and of course, recreation. Just blocks from the world famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, awaits endless shopping, dining, and both indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities. The Atlantic City Convention Center, with over 40 meeting rooms and nearly 500,000 square feet of exhibit space, is the perfect venue to hold the Society s largest annual event. The conference theme of Communicating the Science of Fisheries Conservation to Diverse Audiences is extremely relevant in this day and age, and our program will feature four plenary speakers who will share their thoughts with us on this topic. In addition, more than 80 symposia and 1,200 oral abstracts have been received covering a range of topics such as aquatic biodiversity, communication, climate impacts, contaminants, habitat, socio-economics, stock assessment, collaborative research, and much more. Vendor exhibits and posters will be displayed all week, but be sure not to miss your opportunity to speak with the exhibitors and authors during the Monday evening Trade Show and Poster Networking Event. Other networking events will be held Sunday evening and Wednesday evening, featuring live music, local flavors, and 1,500-2,000 of your closest colleagues, just steps from the beach and boardwalk. Of course, we can t forget the Student Networking Event on Tuesday evening, which will include opportunities for mentoring and some special activities just for students. On top of all of this, our planning committee is also going the extra mile to include some new and special events, such as a working boat show, increased focus on stakeholder engagement, and a Student Quiz Bowl. Outside the conference itself, a world of opportunity awaits! Whether you prefer to expand your horizons through one of a dozen continuing education classes, relax with your toes in the sand, shop till you drop, or check out any of the myriad local attractions, Atlantic City has something for you. With miles of sandy beaches, the allure of the boardwalk, world class shopping and dining, and countless family friendly recreation activities, there is more than enough to do in your down time (and you may just want to plan an extra day or two). 3 Plenary Speakers Chris Oliver, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Chris Oliver is the Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, NOAA and has been a member of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council for several years. He will be talking about Marine Fisheries Management in a Revised Governance System on Monday, August 20, 2018 in the morning. Mamie A. Parker, MA Parker & Associates Mamie A. Parker is the founder of MA Parker & Associates, a current member of the Chesapeake Conservancy and a former Assistant Director of Fisheries and Habitat Conservation at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She will be talking about Continuing Our Diversity and Inclusion Work with Courage, Conflict and Resiliency on Monday, August 20, 2018 in the morning. Dr. Bonnie McCay, Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey Dr. Bonnie McCay is a Distinguished Professor Emerita and a Board of Governors Distinguished Service Professor at Rutgers University. She will be talking about Perils and Promises of Participatory Fisheries Management, or What Good are Foxes in the Henhouse? on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 in the morning Dr. Christine O Connell, Stony Brook University Dr. Christine O Connell is an Assistant Professor of Communications Science at the School of Journalism and the founding Director at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. Get ready to experience an authentic beach event, Jersey-style. Plenty of beachy favorites will be served adjacent to the historic Steel Pier. The Pier, built in 1898, has one of the best views in town, is Atlantic City s oldest theme park, and became famous for hosting a diving horse from the 1950s to 1970s. Tradeshow and Poster Networking Event Monday, August 20, 6:00 8:30 p.m. Atlantic City Convention Center Exhibit Halls At the end of the first exciting day filled with plenary sessions and professional presentations, mingle with businesses providing the latest technology and tools used in fisheries science, explore what local crafters have to offer, and discuss the projects and findings of over 100 poster displays with their presenters. This is a great opportunity to meet contacts, learn new things, and come up with ideas, while also sampling some great food and beverages provided for meeting attendees. Grand Networking Event Wednesday, August 22, 6:00 9:00 p.m. Bally s Beach Patio A casual night outdoors, viewing the ocean on Bally s Beach Patio, is the perfect way to relax after a long day of being indoors. Within walking distance from the Convention Center and host hotels, Bally s Beach Patio is next to Atlantic City s famous boardwalk. The boardwalk was built in 1870, is about four miles long, and is home to Miss America s annual Show Us Your Shoes Parade. The Grand Networking Event s menu was specially designed by Bally s chef and will feature distinctive foods including items such as slider bars, carving stations, and gourmet desserts. It s an event that s sure to impress and provides a unique opportunity to converse with fisheries colleagues from around the world.

11 Student Activities and Networking Events Students play a vital role in the American Fisheries Society, representing future professionals responsible for conservation of our aquatic resources around the world. Students are encouraged to participate in these events to get the most out of their AFS 2018 Annual Meeting experience. Check the Students section of the Annual Meeting website for updates to the following events at afsannualmeeting.fisheries.org. Best Student Paper and Poster Symposium The Best Student Paper Symposium will be held on Monday morning and afternoon, August 20, The Best Poster Symposium will be held on Monday, August 20, 2018, in the evening. Both symposia will be held at the Atlantic City Convention Center, Room TBD. Award recipients will be announced at the AFS Business Meeting on Wednesday, August 22, Student Networking Event 1920s Theme! The AFS 2018 Student Networking Event will be held at the Claridge Grand Ballroom from 5:00pm 9:00pm on Tuesday, August 21, Come network with professionals, fellow students, and test your luck on games of chance at this 1920s themed event! Dressing to the theme is encouraged, but not mandatory. The Claridge, also known as the Skyscraper by the Sea, has décor styled after the Boardwalk Empire era, which will bring you back to the time when icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra walked the halls of The Claridge. This atmosphere combined with the games of chance provided by Tumbling Dice and the opportunity to interact with professionals and peers will make for a show-stopping networking event you do not want to miss! Students will receive a catered meal including a free drink. More details will be announced prior to the event. Student Challenge The Atlantic City Student Activities Committee is challenging students to complete a list of tasks which will encourage participation and networking at the Annual Meeting. Checklists with the tasks will be distributed to students when they receive their meeting badge. Students should submit completed checklists to the registration desk in order to be entered into a raffle drawing for a chance to win an awesome prize. Student Mentoring Event Do you want the inside scoop on how to be successful when applying for jobs, graduate school, internships, and postdocs? The Student Mentoring Event will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 1:40pm 3:20pm at the Atlantic City Convention Center, Room 311. Come speak to professionals with varied careers to get useful advice and tips on how to submit your best application. The first part of this event will be lightning talks by select professionals describing who they are and what they do. Afterwards, students will have the chance to participate in speed mentoring, where each professional will be stationed at a different table and students will rotate between tables every 10 minutes in order to ask professionals their questions.

12 Student Professional Pair-Up The student-professional pair-up gives students a chance for individualized mentoring during the Annual Meeting. Ideally, paired students and professionals will meet early on in the meeting and continue to interact throughout the duration of the meeting in order to get the most out of this mentoring experience. Interested students and professionals will be paired up prior to the meeting and introduced via . It will be up to the student-professional pairs to decide on an initial meeting time and location. Look for the option to sign up when you register for the meeting! Student Quiz Bowl The 1st Annual AFS Student Quiz Bowl is coming to Atlantic City! The Quiz Bowl is a fun and exciting event where you can watch colleges/universities compete in fisheries trivia or make a team and compete yourself. It will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. at the Atlantic City Convention Center, Room 413. Participation is open to teams composed of either: (a) members of a single student sub-unit or chapter of AFS or (b) student members of AFS from a single university or college that doesn t have a student sub-unit. Only one team is allowed per university or college. Each team may consist of up to five players with no more than four participating at once (i.e. one team member will be an alternate during a match). Only two graduate students maximum (persons that already hold a four-year degree and are enrolled in a Master s or PhD program) can participate in a match for a team. Teams are encouraged to wear school colors! 13 Volunteer Opportunity Students, do you need monetary support to attend the Annual Meeting? If so, please consider volunteering! Volunteers are crucial to the success of the meeting. Eligible student volunteers with a minimum four-hour commitment will be paid $10.00 per hour. Sign-up will occur during online meeting registration. Student volunteers will be paid after the meeting. Spawning Run and Carcass Crawl Wednesday, August 22, 6:00 8:00 a.m. The World Famous Atlantic City Boardwalk Need a break from sitting and networking at the meeting? Want to feel the morning sun on your face and the ocean breeze in your hair? Join your colleagues and friends along the scenic Atlantic City Boardwalk for the Spawning Run. More in the mood for a stroll? Set your own pace in the Carcass Crawl. The route will be an out and back 3.1 mile course entirely on the springy wooden planks of the AC Boardwalk, with a stunning view of the ocean. The starting and finish line will be at Boardwalk Hall, just a short walk from the meeting venue and hotel. Lace up your sneakers and come join the fun! Splash and Dash NEW EVENT!!! Wednesday, August 22, 6:50 7:30 a.m. Atlantic Ocean at Boardwalk Hall Ever wish that the Annual Meeting included a water-based event (we are fish people after all!)? Well here is your chance! Come swim with the fishes and show off your best Baywatch moves in this swim-run duathlon. We will meet in front of Boardwalk Hall and head to the beach for the start. First is a 400 meter out and back swim in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a 1 mile out and back run along the beach. The finish will be near the Spawning Run start, so expect to have a boisterous crowd.

14 The Spawning Runners will begin at 6:00 a.m. with Crawlers immediately behind. The run will be timed via Chronotrack Live, with results posted later online. The Splash and Dash will begin at 6:50 a.m., with a 40-minute cutoff. Refreshments at the finishing line await all participants and awards will also be presented to the top finishers in multiple categories. If you are feeling particularly fast, you can compete in both the Spawning Run and Splash and Dash for the same low price! Register online and check in at the Spawning Run booth in the convention center to receive race information and your commemorative t-shirt. All online registrants will receive a t-shirt. Late registration will be allowed at the booth until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, but t-shirts and size choice cannot be guaranteed. Tradeshow Conference attendees from all over the world will have the opportunity to network with a diverse group of resource professionals in this city full of great food, entertainment, and outdoor adventure opportunities. Interested in exhibiting at the AFS Annual Meeting Trade Show? Your exhibit at this major industry event will be seen by an expected attendance of 2,000 fisheries and aquaculture scientists; federal, tribal, state, and local administrators, directors, and elected officials; educators; consultants; and representatives of marine and freshwater fishing industries. Meeting sessions, events, and the trade show will take place at the Atlantic City Convention Center (meetac.com). The trade show will be located in close proximity to all conference activities at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The Trade Show Networking Event, a mixer on the first evening of the Trade Show, provides an ideal opportunity for casual introductions and informal networking. Two complimentary conference registrations are included for booths rented at the member and nonmember rates. This will allow exhibit personnel to attend all conference sessions and functions, interact with attendees outside the Exhibit Hall, and gain information on industry issues. Trade show exhibitors will include federal and state fisheries agencies; sellers of photos, arts, and crafts; and companies providing boats, aquaculture supplies, fish tagging and tracking equipment, computer and software applications, consultant services, digital fish-measuring equipment, water quality monitoring and filtration systems, aeration systems, hydroacoustic systems, and others related to fisheries research and management.

16 Monsters of Climate Science Workshop Monsters of Climate Science Sunday, August 19, afternoon Atlantic City Convention Center The 1980 s Monsters of Rock tour brought together the best heavy metal bands in the world to play together. The Monsters of Climate Science workshop will bring together top scientists from around the country for an afternoon of mayhem, mirth, and majorly informative presentations on different aspects of climate change science and the impacts on fish and fisheries. This year we envision the speakers battling with the giant Monster that is climate change science. The speakers will provide fascinating and fun mini-lectures on topics related to climate change science. This event organized by the AFS Estuaries, and Marine Fisheries Sections will benefit student travel awards for the AFS Annual Meeting. Logo by Avi Litwack NOAA Stakeholder Engagement In accordance with the theme of the 2018 Annual Meeting, Communicating the science of fisheries conservation to diverse audiences, and the broader mission of the American Fisheries Society, efforts are ongoing to increase the participation and attendance of fishing and aquaculture industry stakeholders at the Annual Meeting. This will present industry stakeholders with the opportunity to better understand the research being conducted to inform the assessment and management of our fishery resources and for the development of new and expanded partnerships between industry stakeholders and the scientific community via the networking that will take place at the Annual Meeting.

17 A Program Sub-Committee on Stakeholder Engagement has been formed and consists of scientists with a wide range of experience in conducting collaborative research with industry stakeholders and industry members serving as liaisons to the Sub-Committee. The Sub-Committee is working to develop, promote, and implement appropriate programming for industry stakeholders at the 2018 Annual Meeting. Some of the ideas being implemented include an industry day, which will be on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 and include the organization of symposia of greatest interest to industry stakeholders, industry panels in relevant symposia so that stakeholders can present and interact with scientists, a joint social with food and drinks at the Bass Pro Shops of Atlantic City sponsored by the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists (AIFRB) that will include industry stakeholders and AIFRB members, and some financial support to encourage and facilitate participation by industry stakeholders at the Annual Meeting. Additional ideas will be implemented during the meeting to make it the best possible experience for industry stakeholders who are in attendance.
