6 6 CANBERRA PROFILE The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) economy continues to grow strongly. Economic activity within the ACT is broad based. State final demand (SFD) in the ACT increased by 1.3% over the year to 30 June The second quarter of 2017 also marks 3 consecutive years of positive economic growth. In addition, the Federal Government s relaxation of its budget repair agenda has signaled an improvement in overall business sentiment. The public-sector s general infrastructure expenditure in the ACT increased by 1.0% over the year to the 2nd Quarter Similar to the broader trend in SFD, 30 June 2017 also marks 3 years of continuous public-sector demand growth. POPULATION However, over the past 15 years, the variation in the ACT s demographics has been evident yet modest. The most noticeable demographics shift has been the proportion of elderly residents increasing slightly over the past few years. 7 7 SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM POPULATION FORECASTS The ACT Government expects population growth in the ACT to continue at an average rate of 1.6% per annum from 2017 until In particular, the Territory Government expects population growth to be observed across all age groups. The forecasts of the ACT Government can be summarised as: 1) the number of residents between 0-14 years of age to increase by 9% and continue to account for 19% of the total ACT population. 2) the number of residents between years of age to increase by 2% and account for approximately 30% of the total ACT population. The proportion will be about 1 percentage point (pps) lower by Long term population growth is expected to stabilise at 1.5% per annum. By 2030, the ACT population is expected to exceed half a million people. Population growth is also expected to be evident in both the suburbs of Belconnen and Lawson with consistent population increases being forecast.
