1 Issue 229 Thursday 1 June 2017 INSIDE Mabo Day plans DV Day Pics TAFE News Out & About Boxing & Football News Palm to stay in Townsville electorate The process for the redistribution of state electorates has been finalised and, contrary to initial recommendations, Palm Island will stay put as part of the Townsville electorate. Common sense has prevailed for the people of Palm Island - they will be relieved their service and transport links have not been cut in terms of their state representation, Hinchinbrook MP Andrew Cripps said. Mayor Alf Lacey agreed. It is the right decision, the majority of Palm Islanders wanted to stay with Townsville, Cr Lacey said. Sitting Townsville MP Scott Stewart, a regular visitor to Palm Island, said he was pleased with the news. It didn t make sense that someone would have to travel to Townsville and then find their way to Ingham to go speak with the local member, Mr Stewart told the Townsville Bulletin.
2 Bwgcolman Family Fun Day highlights service delivery and support for DV month In May every year communities across Queensland mark Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that violence of this sort will not be tolerated. This year s Bwgcolman Family Fun Day, or DV Day, was supported by several agencies, including the Coalition against Criminal Assault in the Home Inc (COCAITH) under the North Queensland Domestic Violence Sector Development Pics thanks to Leah Dabea & Andrea Kyle-Sailor program, Relationships Australia and others. The day was opened by the Mayor with a welcome offered by TO Allan Palm Island, with Jennifer Ketchell as MC. In a powerful display, 71 empty chairs to represent 71 lives lost to domestic and family violence across Australia last year, including 18 in Queensland. 2 The Palm Island Voice is free & online at
3 Palm to have stall at Townsville Mabo Day PALM Island will have a stall at the Jezzzine Barracks to promote next year s 100th events during the huge 25th Anniversary of the Mabo High Court Decision celebrations in Townsville. Mabo Day events will highlight the significance of the late Mr Edward Koiki Mabo and others (including the late Mr James Rice and Mr Dave Passi) challenge to the Australian legal system and fight for recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as traditional owners of their land. The commemoration events will be part of 2017 Townsville Reconciliation Week which will commence at 9.30am tomorrow (Friday June 2) at the Mabo monument on the banks of Ross Creek at Bridge Central Park, followed at 11.50am by a street march across the George Roberts Bridge and along Walker Street to the Perfume Gardens Park. On Saturday June 3 a Unity in Community Expo will be on at the Upper Ross PCYC at Allambie Lane in Rasmussen, as well as a huge concert and festival at the Jezzine Barracks from 12 midday. A concert featuring Shane Howard, John Butler, Rochelle Pitt, Neil Murray, Deline Briscoe and more will be the highlight of the day. 5 TAFE SEE program showing the way forward Five young SEE students at TAFE are setting new heights with their excellent work in their accredited Certificate in IT. and becoming great role models for others in the process. These five students are part of the Skills for Employment and Education (SEE) Program at TAFE on Palm Island working in conjunction with Campbell Page. Their attendance is 100 per cent and their energy and enthusiasm is amazing. They are ready for future courses and definitely ready to work (employer alert ). Mum Lil (Lillian) said the students were, wonderful hardworking assets to the community. Employers need to recognise their skills and offer work experience, traineeships and jobs, she said. Well done to all SEE participants and these five excellent students. 11 Training pays off for leading try-scorer You could say training with the Townsville Blackhawks on Palm Island earlier this year has paid handsome dividends for winger Jonathon Reuben. Reuben was the leading try scorer in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition, scoring 16 tries in the first 11 rounds. Blistering speed has enabled Reuben to be a genuine try scoring machine - he scored four against the Capras on May 21. Several of his tries this year have come after 90m sprints leaving Jonathon Reuben, Vincent Bligh & Blackhawks Kierran Moseley defenders in his wake. Last year Reuben was the competition s lead-ing try scorer with 18 even though he missed nine games through injury. Reuben has previously been with the Canber-ra Raiders and Sydney Roosters and also has lined up at several North Queensland Allblacks carnivals for teams such as Bowen and Palm Island side Ajas Boyz. When Reuben was on Palm Island for the Blackhawks training camp he was a popular role model for the younger footballers. Palm Island life The Palm Island Voice is free & online at
12 Boxers kept busy FOUR Palm Island boxers travelled to Townsville for a Sunstate Amateur Boxing League tournament at Brother s League s Club last Friday night. Hosted by Dennis Clancy from Townsville Club Hawks 10 bouts were watched by a big and enthusiastic crowd. Brayden Nallajar lost a split points decision to Ingham Alliance Club boxer Nick Scott in the junior division. A gallant Raymond Haines also lost by split points to Brodie Griffith from Charters Towers in the 57kg class. Jase Thimble and Preston Robertson could not be matched with opponents and fought an exhibition bout. They were really appreciated by the audience, trainer Ray Dennis said. BABINDA Meanwhile five Palm fighters from Palm Is-land and two from Townsville club Art of strength travelled to Babinda for a tourna-ment on May 13. Only three boxers could be matched and Brayden Nallajar gave away weight to lose a close points decision in the junior division to Cooper Maddern from Hawks. In the 42kg class, Palm s Preston Robinson got the win over Cody Ware from Natural Born Fighters Club from Cairns. Tristan Robinson went down in a hard fight to Tosh Picher a much more experienced fighter from Many thanks to Angel Harry for these fantastic pics! Mareeba in the 66kg class. It was a great first round for Tristan who then tired. Several Palm Island fighters are expected to compete at the Golden Gloves tournament at the end of June. 12 The Palm Island Voice is free & online at
