1 Issue 258 Thursday 9 August 2018 Long honours list for October footy PALM Island s Vern The Legend Daisy and his brother Frank along with former Australian Test and Queensland State of Origin representatives Matt Bowen, Colin Scott and Sam Backo will officially open the Arthur Beetson Foundation Murri Knockout rugby league carnival at Townsville in October. Palm Islanders including Milton Thaiday and Raymond Blackman are amongst numerous former NRL stars of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander descent who will be honoured at the carnival. Bindal s Jenny Pryor said that North Queenslanders who had shone in the sport will be honoured. It will be known as the Mid West, Cape York, Torres Strait and North Queensland recognition, she said. When I was going through them I realised just how many there has been and what a good side you KEEN weather watchers on Palm Island were astounded to see this waterspout form over the bay in front of the TAFE on Palm Island late last month. Waterspouts are weaker than tornadoes, but can still cause significant damage. Pic thanks to Geraldine Geesu. could pick from them. Matt Bowen really has done the Cape York region proud with what he has achieved and is a role model. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE...

Ms Pryor said the Honours list included John Buttigieg, Ray Thompson, Robert Lui, Ben Barba, Scott Prince, John Doyle, Justin Hodges, Sam Thaiday, Edrick Lee, Brenko Lee, Dale Shearer, Lui Bon, Javid Bowen, Michael Bani and brothers Gerry, Norman and the late Phillip De La Cruz. Non-indigenous former Townsville Souths club champion Gene Miles will also be honoured. One of the other highlights of the carnival is expected to be a game between the Queensland Police and a Reconciliation Allstars team which will feature some of our best veterans. This will be arguably the biggest Allblacks carnival in Townsville s history and will inject a lot of money into the local economy. Visiting players will come from far and wide and men s teams will be restricted to Above: former Mount Isa Foley Shield player Dennis Clancy with teammate Vern Daisy along and photobomber Kevin Barry in the background. two NRL footballers. Already Cronulla Sharks, former NSW State of Origin, Australian and Tongan test side forward Andrew Fifita looks set to play either for Eastern Warriors or Cannonball. 8 My name is Kelly McBride... I am 32 years old. I have an 8 year-old-son, Lorence. I am an Indigenous Healthworker. I m currently on Walkabout, my journey I call it, travelling with the Show. I really enjoy going and seeing new places. I have been working at the show travelling around the East Coast of Australia for 14 months now, selling show bags. The furthest north we travel is up to Mossman, furthest south is Geelong. We travel all over New South Wales Countries, Queensland Countries and Victorian Countries (Traditional Lands). I have been to places I didn t even know existed. It has been a great experience travelling sometimes in the truck or driving the work car. From the beach to the rain forest to the desert, I have seen many beautiful places. Mountains, hills, rivers, lakes. History of my family... Kaanju (Batavia Downs), Olkola (Alice River), Djuru (Mission Beach), Jirrbal (Ravenshoe), Butchulla (K Gari), Bundjalung (Mulli Mulli), Woppaburra (Great Keppel Island) and Gunditjmara (Warrnambool). That is my Songline, my family descends from all from these Countries. My Grandmother is Florence Izzard (Palmer). Her father was Gresham Gunnawarra and her mother was Glenis Baru (Palmer). Glenis is Alf Palmer Snr s daughter and we are decendents from this great man. Grandad Alf was a boat builder on Palm Island. My Grandmother Flo married Stanley Izzard (Snr). They both lived at old Bamboo Creek Road, Curry Farm, behind the Dam in their donga for many years. My Grandmother Flo worked at the Joyce Palmer Health Service as a cleaner, they both now live in Townsville. They moved from Palm Island, because the doctors suspected she had cancer, which she did. Nan has done many chemotherapy and radiation sessions. My mother is Charmaine McBride (Palmer). She has been travelling with the show for over 12 years. Her main role was a cook for the show staff, the bosses and their families in Kym Brophys Diner. Everyone here on the showgrounds calls my mother Molly. My father is Marty McBride Snr (deceased). He is a Butchulla/Bundjalung man. He was a painter by trade. He passed away when I was 5. His father is Claude McBride (Jett). He is a Bundjalung man currently living in Casino. My father s mother - my Grandmother - is Irene McBride (Clarke). She is a Butchulla woman. Irene was a school teacher on Palm Island for many years. She began teaching at Saint Michael s, then at the Bwgcolman State School. Irene now resides back in Hervey Bay (Butchulla Country). I have family everywhere and it s a great feeling catching up with them when I m travelling through the towns. I enjoy seeing my nieces and nephews faces when I give them their show bag. Selling shows bags is very rewarding. I enjoy waking up and looking out my window to a different view every few days. Best part of the job is that I get to enjoy this with my son. I don t see this as a job, but more of a lifestyle. I m very grateful I get to do this line of work. I ve always wanted to be a flight attendant, and get paid to travel in a plane, but things don t always turn out the way you expect them to. So now I m travelling in a truck. Without trucks Australia stops. I work for Gordon Richards at Showbags Enterprises, they are based in Port Maquaurie. I also work for Shelley Pink- Easey at Showbag Factory, they are based in Brisbane/ Wangaratta. I understand why my mother has been here for so long. I ve made many new wonderful friends from all over Australia and from overseas as well. If I wasn t doing this job, I wouldn t have met my boyfriend, Scott. I have been to the most unique places most people only dream of. I will see you at the Show.
