A new weather station was recently installed atop Silverspring School. The Silverspring weather station, sponsored by the Sask Chapter of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) was installed on the roof of Silverspring School recently. The weather station will provide the schools with an opportunity to add local weather observations into their curriculum. It also provides everyone else in the community with real-time weather that's more local and more frequent than the Saskatoon Airport. 2 VISITATION SOARING AT THE ROYAL SASKATCHEWAN MUSEUM Visitation at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) is on the rise. Total visitation during the summer of 2016 increased 30 per cent compared to the same period in When compared to the average over the last 10 years, visitation was up 27 per cent throughout the summer months. The increase in visitation is credited, in a large part, to the launch of new exhibits and programs, popular science-based and family-friendly events, and the important research performed by RSM scientists. The staff at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum are a passionate and dedicated group, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. The teams in programming and exhibits, and research and collections deserve a lot of credit for the work they ve done to increase the profile of the museum both locally and internationally. 3 Premier Brad Wall left September 17 on a trade mission to South Korea and China aimed at showcasing and building on the province s considerable global strengths in food, fuel and fertilizer. The 11 day mission will include speaking engagements and meetings with government and business leaders in Seoul, South Korea and Qingdao, Beijing and Shanghai in China. This will be the first visit by a Saskatchewan premier to South Korea and Premier Wall s third trip to China. The mission coincides with a visit to South Korea and China of a Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP)-led delegation that includes 16 exporters and seven industry
associations. The premier will also be joined at various meetings by representatives of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission, the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, Cereals Canada, the Universities of Saskatchewan and Regina, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Saskatchewan and Canada need to look to Asia if we want to keep growing our economies, Wall said. South Korea and China are major markets for us and for the Saskatchewan companies that supply food and energy products and expertise to the world. China is our second-largest export market and the world s second-largest economy: we re looking to expand on existing relationships there and explore new trade opportunities. We also see a bright future for our agricultural producers in the South Korea market, thanks to the preferred access they will get under the new Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement. Read the highlights of the mission here. DON'T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE NHL IN SASKATOON The NHL pre-season game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators will be an exciting opportunity to see the NHL right here in Saskatoon. The game will be held October 4 at 7:30 pm at SaskTel Centre. Ticket prices are $47.25 to $99.75 (plus service charges) and are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, on-line at Ticketmaster.ca. Click here for information. Watch this newsletter for additional details. WATER SECURITY AGENCY GIVES COMMUNITIES APPROVAL TO USE WATER FROM THE NORTH SASKATCHEWAN RIVER
The Water Security Agency (WSA) is advising the communities of North Battleford, Prince Albert and Melfort as well as SaskWater that they may start diverting and treating water from the North Saskatchewan River and Codette Reservoir. The water intakes for these communities were shut down in July after a Husky Energy pipeline near Maidstone leaked oil into the river. The decision by WSA to allow the communities to turn on the water intakes and start to treat water from the river and reservoir comes after approximately 88 per cent of the oil has been recovered in addition to conducting significant technical study, monitoring and review. 6 It was great to celebrate a Rider Win at Mosaic Stadium with Saskatoon residents Richard Szwydky and Darren Dale. Try something new at Culture Days, taking place in communities across Saskatchewan September 30, October 1 and 2, As you may know, this national initiative has celebrated
Canadian culture on the last weekend of September every year since In Saskatchewan, Culture Days has engaged over 100,000 people in more than 1,200 different cultural activities in more than 300 communities since it first began! The momentum grows each and every year and we hope that you will join the Culture Days excitement and explore the myriad of fun, interesting and interactive cultural activities happening in or around our community! Through thousands of free activities across the country, Culture Days promotes inclusivity, awareness, participation and engagement in arts and culture for all Canadians. Culture Days bridges the gap between Canada's communities and citizens, highlighting the notion that culture is for everyone, regardless of age, geography, background or income. Culture Days shines a spotlight on the invaluable contributions that a vibrant cultural life brings to the economic and social well-being and development of all communities across Canada throughout the year. Many of these Culture Days events are made possible through the support of SaskCulture and the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation. Across our province, activities will instill a strong sense of community and create memorable moments as friends and neighbours gather in celebration. I hope everyone is able to take part in the cultural life of our province. Cultural activities contribute to our sense of community and reflect who we are. As Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, I'm pleased our government values culture and continues to look for the best ways to support it. Through our partnership with SaskCulture, with funding from Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation we will make sure there are opportunities for young people to participate in activities that foster and encourage creativity and innovation. I encourage everyone to participate and support Culture Days 2016! Click here to see the many activities being held throughout the three day event. NEXT WEEK... 10 Pictured above are some photos of an exciting and well attended car show held at NuFab last weekend. Arnold Reimer, General Manager and owner of NuFab and employee Evan Drisner, proudly display a check in the amount of $5,000. which was added to a grand total of over $100,000. raised for the Children's Hospital Foundation! The amount represents a combination of funds raised at car shows extending over the past five years. What an incredible feat. Once again, the true spirit of Saskatchewan people is displayed at each and every car show. Not only can you enjoy viewing the vintage cars and great fellowship, but you're supporting a worthwhile cause.
Two more car shows will be held this year... Saturday at Kindersley and Sunday at Rosetown. All proceeds will go toward supporting local charities and community improvements. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this year of car shows such an outstanding success! CAMPONI TRANSITIONAL HOUSING 11 OFFICIALLY OPENS IN SASKATOON The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Housing Coalition, today celebrated the official opening of 20 new rental units for at-risk individuals who require support services as they work toward living independently. Our government is pleased to support this housing project, which will help 20 Saskatoon individuals continue to build independence in a supportive and caring environment, Campeau said. Together with our partners, we are working to keep Saskatchewan strong and this project is a wonderful example of that vision in action. I am pleased that the City of Saskatoon is offering financial support for this project that will provide stable and supportive housing for twenty Saskatoon residents, Atchison said. This project is one of several that has been supported under the City s Ten-Year Housing Business Plan. ALMOST 8000 FANS ENJOYED A HARD FOUGHT GAME LAST WEEKEND AT POTASHCORP PARK
It was fantastic to be in the stands to witness the tremendous effort by the Huskies last weekend as they played in the Alumni Game against the University of Calgary Dinosaurs. The excitement went down to the last minute of play. The Huskies didn't win but they were outstanding and as always, displayed sportsmanship throughout the game. I'm very much looking forward the the historic first game to be played at the new Mosaic Stadium in Regina October 1. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the University of Regina Rams are slated to open Regina's new Mosaic Stadium Saturday, October 1. The game will be the first event ever at the $278 million facility, which will host the Rams and Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders full-time beginning with the 2017 season.
