13 LABOUR MARKET AND WORKFORCE FOREIGN-BORN WORKFORCE Hessen is an international state and offers both German and foreign-born workers excellent employment perspectives. Since 2012 employment numbers have been growing particularly dynamically. The number of persons employed has increased by more than seven percent over this period, with the number of German workers rising by around 4% and that of foreign-born workers even by about 37.8 percent. Therefore, some 13.7 percent of all persons employed are of foreign nationality at the moment an above-average number compared with the German average. 14 LABOUR MARKET AND WORKFORCE DUAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN THE STEM SECTORS IN HESSEN Dual vocational training is the central pillar of the strategy of Hessen s economy to meet its own demand of skilled professionals. Each year some 37,300 young people start dual vocational training at vocational schools and companies. Top 5 STEM professions that require the completion of a dual vocational training programme in Hessen (number of new hires, 2016) The STEM sectors and occupations in the fields of mathematics, computer science, sciences and technology are the main focus of dual vocational training schemes. In 2016 a total of 35,900 apprentices, or one in three, completed their dual vocational training in the STEM sectors in Hessen. This is almost one in three of all apprentices. Motor vehicle mechatronics technician Electronics technician 972 1,476 Motor vehicle mechatronics technicians, plant mechanics, electronics technicians, IT specialists, and warehouse logistics specialists are examples of professions that require the completion of a dual vocational training programme and which are currently in high demand in Hessen s automotive industry, logistics sector, engineering sector as well as the metal and electronics industries. 17 GLOBAL HESSEN THE MOST IMPORTANT EXPORTS Chemical and pharmaceutical products are main exports, mechanical engineering industry is secondlargest exporter Products of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are by far Hessen s top exports. They therefore lead the 2016 ranking of the most important export products with a volume of 17.2 billion euros, which accounts for 29.3 percent of Hessen s entire export volume. They are followed by machinery, cars, and electronics and electrical engineering products. These product categories are at the same time Hessen s most important imports. With 14.3 billion euros, products of the electrotechnical industry account for the largest share of the total import volume followed by chemical and pharmaceutical products with 11.1 billion euros. In 2016 Hessen s economy exported goods were worth 58.6 billion euros. Hessen s imports had a volume of 86.2 billion euros and saw an increase of 3.5 percent. 18 GLOBAL HESSEN THE MOST IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNERS Exports: The US Is the most important trading partner for Hessen Two-thirds of exports go to countries in Europe In percent of all of Hessen s exports went to the US. It is followed by France and Great Britain with a share of 7.7 and 6.9 percent, respectively, ahead of the Netherlands with 6.6 percent. With a volume of goods exports to China valued at 3 billion euros, it is, along with the US, another non-eu country among the TOP 10 trading partners. The majority of Hessen s exports, 65 percent, go to countries in Europe. With 16.5 percent, the second largest export market is Asia, closely followed by America with 15.6 percent. 19 GLOBAL HESSEN THE MOST IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNERS Imports: Goods from the US and China account for the largest share of Hessen's import volume The United States and the People s Republic of China are Hessen s main trading partners. For the first time, China is in first place among the exporters of goods to Hessen with a volume of 9.7 billion euros, which accounts for a 11.2 percent share of Hessen s total imports. The US takes second place with a volume of goods exported to Hessen valued 7.8 billion euros and a 9.1 percent share of the total imports. With a share of 60 percent, most of all goods imports to Hessen come from European countries.
