May 4th Edition T u m u a k i T a u t o k o He mihi nui ki a koutou, i komiromiro mai ki ōku mōhiotanga. Just a fortnight into Term 2 and even though the temperatures are cooling in Te Hiku, things are really starting to heat up in the kura. As a kura we were privileged to have Sir. John Kirwan speak to our students about depression last week. His message around changing this narrative as a collective, and for those who are at risk seeking support, resonated strongly with our tamariki and has given us plenty to think about moving forward. A quick look at the calendar for the week and you get a sense of the depth and breadth of opportunity available to the tamariki at our kura. MAIBIZ, the Year 13 Tertiary Trip, Writers Festival, Class Photos, Sevens, Rugby, Football, Netball, Basketball, Hockey and a myriad of other activities are available for our students. In Week five we have Academic Counselling scheduled on the Tuesday afternoon and full day Wednesday. These counselling sessions provide an opportunity for whānau, teachers and students to get around the table and consider the progress made to date, and then create an action plan that supports maximum achievement in I know it s been emphasized before, but Educational research indicates that attendance at these hui significantly impacts the success rate of students at NCEA and should be prioritized. If you cannot make it for whatever reason then please contact the school to arrange an alternative slot. I look forward to catching up with many of you during Academic Counselling in week five. Nā reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā rā tātou katoa. Tuesday, 16th May School Class Photos Wednesday, 17th May to Friday, 19th May Year 13 Tertiary trip to Whangarei, Auckland and Hamilton Wednesday, 17th May to Friday, 19th May MaiBiz Wednesday, 31st May Academic Counselling Talent Quest Te Ha o te Mauri and the Music Department will present the annual Talent Quest in Week 4, Term 2. The lunchtime heats will be held from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th May, with the finals on the evening of Friday 2nd June. Entries are now being taken for any students who would like to perform - it may be a song, dance, drama, skit, instrumental, band, stand-up comedy, or any other performance. Students may enter as individuals or in a group. Everyone who takes the stage will earn points for their whanau group. Entry forms are now available from Mrs Chuck in K1, kaimahi or the student centre.

Taha Hinengaro Curriculum PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS PERFORMING ARTS Drama Year 10 Drama students have been studying musical theatre. After much deliberation the above group based their theatre piece on the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight and gave a very entertaining performance based on animals in the jungle. These animals were somewhat more peaceful than the other groups where swords fights and the struggle between good and evil inspired original songs. A talented class with brilliant ideas. Photography Last term, Te Ahu Artspace exhibited Picture Perfect, featuring the work of Year 13 Photography and Design students from Kaitaia College. The photography included surreal imagery, portraits, street photography, abandoned buildings, still life, sunsets, and some design students work for businesses and events. Featured Artists: Ian Bamber, Ngawari Benson, Dani Elliott, Ashlee Job, Taui Kellner, Georgia Authunsson-O Connor, Jas Parmar, Katie Payne, Floreena Roberts, Anel Scheepers, Tahlia Smith, Imogen Van Kan, Darien Wilde & Maia Wood. Visual Arts Our brand new Year 9 Visual Arts curriculum continues to evolve this term with the introduction of collagraph relief printing. This particular project began with observational sketching of the whakairo pou in the wharehui. Using sketches as inspiration, students designed cardboard templates to ink and then print using the printing press. Music On the last Wednesday of Term 1, the senior Music students performed in the Te Ahu atrium for the visitors and workers. It is a beautiful space to perform in with amazing acoustics. It was a particular delight to hear the mesmerizing sounds of the flute as played by Tahlia Smith. In the photo above, Javia Maheno tries out one of her assessment pieces on guitar. This informal performance was a chance for students to fine tune their pieces and build their confidence ahead of the the first assessment Soiree concert on 13 June. Dance Senior dance is currently working on developing a repertoire of contrasting dances. This gives students an opportunity to explore dance in a range of genres. It enables them to learn the distinct stylistic technique of each dance genre which they will perform as a group. They have participated in a contemporary dance workshop and are now working with Hip-hop tutor - Joe Wells. It is on the plan to gain some expertise in ballroom dance as another genre. Watch this space!

TAI TOKERAU FESTIVAL Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools festival is a highlight for all Northland Secondary School Kapa Haka teams every year, with this year s festival being an exceptionally special one for Kaitaia College s Te Kāhui Haka ōte Puāwaitanga. The past eight months at Kaitaia College have been a long and arduous journey with the passing of four members of our kura community, said head tutor, Whaea Morgana Thomas. The school haka team, therefore, wanted to ensure that these members of our kura community were acknowledged, and we also looked at this as a process of healing, by dedicating their festival bracket to those who had passed. This year s bracket, with the approval of family members, was dedicated to Finn Spaans, Georgia Buckingham, Mrs Suzanne Kennedy and Te Amohaere Rudolph. I was crying before I went on stage at festival, said kaitātaki wahine (female leader) Moturangi McManus-Thomas. All of our items were significant to our fallen whanau and we (the performers) understood the depth, love and understanding that we had to put into our bracket as it wasn t just a performance this year. The team also wanted to ensure that the families of those who had passed were acknowledged and showcased their performance, especially for those whānau, in front of a packed audience on the final day of school in the Kaitaia College hall. Our kura performance was a special one, said Ruia Itieli, one of the two kaitātaki tāne (male leaders). We are always really nervous to perform in front of our kura and whānau, but this was a dedication and we wanted to make sure we had a mean performance for the sake of our whānau members who came to watch. I felt like it was the best performance we did, mentioned Noah Muiaiva, the other kaitātaki tāne (male leader). We performed twice at Bream Bay College, but our kura performance, here at home definitely felt the best. Te Puāwaitanga had three wānanga throughout term one, the first being held in Te Hapua, the second being held in Auckland and the final back on their home ground. I would just like to thank our whānau for all of their help during this journey to festival, because it wasn t an easy journey. So to our whaea, Whaea Morgana, who has seen me through five festivals and who was a rock of strength for our roopu during some dark moments along this journey, we thank-you, said Moturangi McManus-Thomas To Whaea Mihi Henare, our tuakana Irie Thomas and Rangiwēwehi Fletcher, thankyou for your knowledge, time and energy, mentioned Ruia Itieli To Whaea Dee, Aunty Aisha and Nana Millie for the kai, the growlings and the lessons thank-you all so much. We really do appreciate it. said Noah Muiaiva

CAVING OTANGAROA/ABSEILING KERIKERI Last Monday a group of 9 students ranging from Years 9 to 13 travelled to Otangaroa Cave at Bellingham Quarry. They were all first-timers except for Ebony Petricevich. All members worked well as a team and enjoyed the challenges that caving presents, including low narrow stream ways where there was only 100mm of airspace. Ebony showed the way out the squeeze passage at the end, although larger cavers climbed up the usual path. Following the caving experience we travelled to a Kerikeri reserve for abseiling. This time Morgan showed his experience and confidence on the big abseil with his speed and bouncing. All members completed the 25m pitch, most doing three to four drops. The passing of daylight savings meant we were still packing up at 5.30 as it got dark! All tired, but happy. 5 NORTHLAND ROADSHOW On Tuesday 9th May approximately 800 of our students from Year 9 through to Year 13 attended the Northland Careers Roadshow. The spacious venue at Te Ahu Centre was much appreciated by the 50 tertiary providers that handed out information on varying vocational pathways. These tertiary organisations were offering various courses from certificate level through to degrees, cadetships, trade apprenticeships including the NZ Defence Force. A highlight for some students was that they were also able to witness the Emergency Services Display, held at the Kaitaia AMP Showgrounds. Three of our SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) students did an excellent job by participating in the mock-vehicle accident: Taylor Masters, Maraea Witana and Isabella Ryan. Other local schools took advantage of this future pathway opportunity that included their students from Year 7 through to Year 13. Many thanks to the chef skills of our Youth Services mentors Richard Hape and Ashley Dye for providing us with a free sausage sizzle. Also to the bus drivers, funders and the Kaitaia Careers Roadshow organisation committee that made this day possible: Petricevich Motors/Commuter Tours, Roma Marae, Foundation North, Kaitaia College, Abundant Life School, FNDC, FNSCC, Kaitaia Police and Te Runanga o Te Rarawa. Pictured above with Careers Advisor Mareea Paitai is ex-college student Tyler Simeon. Tyler joined the Navy after leaving school and is now part of their Recruitment team. SPECIAL OLYMPICS We have nine Kaitaia College students who are members of the Bay of Islands Special Olympics Swim Team. On the weekend of 20th and 21st May they will be competing in the T2 Regionals which will be held at the Kawakawa Pools. The club is looking for approximately volunteers to ensure that the event can happen and run smoothly. Volunteers are required for timekeeping (training provided on the day if required), runners and marshals. Please feel free to share with any of your contacts and organisations that you feel may be interested in giving up some of their precious time to help our athletes qualify for the New Zealand National Special Olympics which will be held in Wellington during November and December this year. The last time our athletes competed was in 2013 in Dunedin. So whānau, if you wish to help please contact: Cori Paul Regional Sports Co-ordinator Special Olympics New Zealand (txt is okay) corip@specialolympics.org.nz Nicole Grimme Special Olympics New Zealand Club Chairperson nicolegrimme@hotmail.com

OUTWARD BOUND WOW, I have just had a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have completed a 21 day Outward Bound course. I survived a two and three day tramping trip and had to make shelter from what nature had available. Slept under the stars. Went on a three day sailing trip through the Marlborough sounds, watched dolphins playing around our boat. Had a whole day kayaking in the river and also went down some rapids which was fun. I tried rock climbing, abseiling and tree top obstacle course which I have never done before. I have met lots of amazing people, which I still keep in contact with. If you get an opportunity like this, take it because it is truly a life changing experience which will stay with you forever. After finishing this course it has made me stronger and made me to believe in myself more. By Kara Wallace SCHOOL REPRESENTATION THRESHOLDS In 2017 the school has implemented a new process around representation in Sports Teams, Cultural Groups and any other activity that is not regarded as curriculum related. For students to represent us in these areas, it is expected that they have an attendance rate of over 80% and/or are not currently on card. Students who do not meet these thresholds will be removed from these activities until their attendance or behaviour meets the required thresholds. It is important that as a whānau we raise the goal posts for our tamariki and feel that this process will ensure that the students who represent our kura do, as much as possible, encapsulate our values. As always, our kura welcomes any whānau who want to korero further on this kaupapa. Whānau Portal A reminder to all whānau that information on student progress, including attendance information, is available from the whānau portal. This portal can be accessed through the school website, by scrolling to the bottom (parent picture) and clicking on the Parents link. The username and password to enter the portal are available by ringing or ing the main office at the college. These will also be handed out to Year whānau when they come in for Academic Counselling in Week 5 of this term. H e a d B o y C o m m e n t Kia ora tatau katoa, It s been a great first couple weeks back. There has been a focus recently on mental wellbeing. Kaitaia College had the privilege of hosting former All Black great Sir John Kirwan on Thursday. He spoke of his own demons surrounding depression, after struggling with the mental illness while playing for the All Blacks. The message to the students was for them to look within themselves, make their own dreams and fly with it. Have confidence and make yourself laugh or smile at least once a day. He encouraged students to look for the early signs and help their friends seek help. I hope that we can all take something positive from the messages he spoke of. Don't be afraid to reach out when you re in need. People are more accepting than you would think. Be good to each other and look out for each other. Before leaving, Sir John gave Kaitaia College autographed copies of his books titled All Blacks Don t Cry and Stand By Me to add to the Library shelves. On behalf of the student body I would like to thank Sir John for giving up his time to come and speak with us. What a legend and an inspiration! Ngā mihi, Reuben.

SIR JOHN KIRWAN TALKS DEPRESSION It was an absolute privilege welcoming Sir John Kirwan to Kaitaia College this week. Mr Kirwan was visiting on behalf of his work with Westpac, after becoming an Ambassador in He continues to spread his message to help people understand more about mental illness and encourage them to talk about it. The world-class winger is passionate about putting an end to youth suicide. At Kaitaia College he opened up and shared his personal story of depression, resilience and hope after struggling with the mental illness as a player. Youth in New Zealand have the highest suicide rates in the developed world, so it s not something we can ignore. It s something I want to tackle head on and openly talk about because you can get through it, and there s a lot of hope out there if you reach out and look for it. Mr Kirwan quoted Martin Luther King Junior s famous quote - I have a dream. He hopes that one day there will be an end to youth suicide in New Zealand. Talita Klopper was in the audience and said, He really gave a shocking first hand view of what depression is like, it was really eye opening. Tahlia Betheras took away the important warning sign of looking for behavioural changes, and how to take action. With Manaaki Hoepo saying, JK told us the early warning signs on what to look out for in the people around us who may be suffering or developing depression. Mr Kirwan put to rest the 'what have you got to be depressed about?' myth, while confirming and reminding us all that this is an illness and not a weakness. He reinforced that we can create our own definitions of success, love and happiness; play by our own rules instead of trying to fit into someone else's box; and to build or rebuild your life around what you want to be important. The resounding messages for the students were for them to look into themselves, to dream big, and have confidence in themselves. He asked them to try and do something every day that makes you smile. Keep trying, give it everything and don t look back, and when you get to my age, you can say I gave it my best shot. I would rather try and fail, than spend my life wondering - what if? JK s work in the mental health area has gone a long way to removing the stigma that surrounds depression in New Zealand. As the first rugby player to openly talk about depression, Sir John Kirwan continues to prove himself as a true kiwi icon, both on and off the field. He encouraged students to look for the early warning signs and to help their friends seek help. Go on that journey with them. Your mates accept you for what you are. The newsletter is available electronically on a fortnightly basis. This format will be ed to all parents on our data system and is uploaded on the Kaitaia College Facebook page, and our Website. If your child is represented in this newsletter and you would like a hard copy of it, or you have not received our newsletter via , please contact the school on , or admin@kaitaiacollege.school.nz
