2 Glasgow is Waiting to Welcome You Chairman of the Organising Committee - Dr Graham Beastall I am delighted to report excellent progress towards the organisation of EuroMedLab Glasgow The response from industry and the profession throughout Europe has been very positive and all the signs are that we will have a hugely successful congress. Your participation will help to guarantee that success. The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), situated on the historic River Clyde, is the ideal venue for EuroMedLab Glasgow It has a large selection of high quality lecture theatres of varying size and a single huge exhibition hall in which we can house the industry exhibition, the posters, a wide range of catering and much more. Hotel accommodation to suit all tastes is available either on the SECC site or in the city centre, which is less than 2km away. Glasgow airport is only 15min by taxi and is well served by a wide range of airlines, including the new generation of budget airlines. The scientific programme for EuroMedLab Glasgow 2005 is at an advanced stage of preparation and owes much to the input from the International Scientific Advisory Board. We have received so many positive suggestions that we have expanded the programme to offer more choice during the congress itself and there are now three major satellite symposia linked to the congress. You have the opportunity to contribute by presenting a poster, an oral communication or a lunchtime roundtable - full details will appear in the Invitation to Participate, which will be distributed in the autumn of The Organising Committee is determined that by visiting EuroMedLab Glasgow 2005 you will be able to sample the warmth and humour of Scottish culture. We have included traditional music and dancing, a Scottish Experience, a ceilidh (party) and the option to eat a mediaeval dinner in a spectacular Scottish castle. Outside these organised occasions there will be ample opportunity to eat, drink and shop in the modern vibrant city that is Glasgow or to visit the nearby spectacular Scottish mountains and glens. 3 The Scientific Programme Chairman of the Scientific Programme Committee - Professor Alan Shenkin The Scientific Programme Committee for Glasgow 2005 will provide an innovative and exciting programme ranging from basic science to the latest developments in laboratory medicine, with something to interest all clinical chemists. Each day will start with four parallel symposia and, after a short coffee break the morning plenary lecture will take place. A long lunch break has been planned to allow delegates to take advantage of lunchtime roundtables, poster viewing and the exhibition. The afternoon scientific sessions will comprise a plenary lecture followed by four parallel symposia. These have been designed to include at least one clinical, one biochemical and one management presentation, to give a balanced programme. The Scientific Programme committee are trying to be innovative in their thoughts about the presentation of the symposia and one session each day will be interactive Clinics in Laboratory Medicine with audience participation in the diagnosis and recommended treatment of the patient. The planned topics for these sessions include paediatric cases, endocrine cases and management of the critically ill. This will be your chance to test your skills against the experts. For those of you that prefer the traditional format of symposia, the planned topics include: Obesity and the Metabolic Syndrome New Aspects of Vitamin D Update on Thyroid Disease Cognitive Decline - Aetiology and Antecedents Oxidation in Human Disease Renal Tubular Disorders and inhibiting Decline into Renal Failure Current Issues in Intensive Care Cardiovascular Disease Hypertension Inherited Metabolic Diseases: Changing Horizons Biochemistry of Platelet Function Developments in the Laboratory Diagnosis and Management of Cancers It is planned to try to include some short submitted papers within the symposia to encourage young researchers to present their latest research to the scientific community. Lunchtimes will be a busy time in the exhibition hall, with poster ward rounds where posters from selected topics will be presented for discussion with fellow researchers, lead by an expert in the field. Lunchtime roundtables will enable delegates to discuss particular issues in an informal forum with others interested in the topic. In addition to all the activities organised by the Scientific Programme Committee there will be further science and technology presented in up to 10 industry-sponsored workshops taking place throughout each day. We think that you will be spoilt for choice with the range of science and medicine to be presented in Glasgow 2005.

4 The Social Programme Dr Richard Spooner - Chairman of the Local Organising Comminttee Following the Opening Ceremony on Sunday 8th May you will experience Civic Hospitality at the Glasgow Science Centre. Not only a chance to experience some hands on science, from physics to psychology, but meet old friends and make new ones. During the evening there will be opportunities to see the city from the River Clyde and participate in Highland Games. After a meal there is a ceildh, a traditional Scottish dance party, finishing late. After a drinks reception in the Exhibition area on Monday, delegates are invited to a Scottish Experience in the main auditorium. On Wednesday there is a Conference Banquet at Stirling Castle. 5 Bursaries There will be a number of bursaries available to assist young clinical scientists in Europe who intend to be active at EuroMedLab 2005 by for example, presenting a poster. These bursaries will be made available through selected national societies and are intended to pay the meeting registration fee only. Further information will be made available via the website The Venue The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) is the best purpose-built conference and exhibition centre in the UK. Situated on the historic River Clyde close to the city centre, the Clyde Auditorium Building at the SECC has been termed the Sydney Opera House of the Northern Hemisphere and is known locally as the Armadillo. A wide range of modern hotels are within easy reach of the conference centre. A commercial exhibition of the most up-to-date instrumentation will also be housed along with the scientific posters in a single spacious hall located immediately adjacent to the meeting rooms.
