11 IST Project: ISMAEL Conclusion Field trials with the sensors in Saarbrücken, Thessaloniki and Frankfurt are very promising Further enhancements can be achieved based on research results ISMAEL aims to provide an airfield surveillance solution for smaller airports as well as for special applications at big hubs ISMAEL could serve as a backup system for safety critical areas like stop bars

13 ATC Wake: Main Goal To develop and build an integrated Air Traffic Control wake vortex safety and capacity platform and to use it to assess the interoperability with existing ATC systems to assess the safety and capacity improvements obtained to evaluate the operational usability & acceptability of ATC- Wake to draft a Technology Implementation Plan (TIP) to guide the local installation to facilitate dynamic and weather dependent aircraft separation

14 ATC Wake: holistic approach Establishment of ATC Wake integrated platform plus : Wake Vortex induced risk assessment Quantitative assessment of the ATC-Wake operation indicative aircraft separation per crosswind interval ATC Wake HMI experiments with European controllers

15 ATC Wake: conclusions Project established confidence in the concept of reduced separations ( via feasibiltiy analysis, safety and capacity studies, close contact to users) The reduced Wake Vortex separation, targeted with crosswind, is 2,5 Nm separation between aircraft on same final approach path 90 seconds between all aircraft departing on the same runway. Improved runway throughput and reduced delays with ATC Wake: Predicted delay in 2015 (without ATC-Wake ) : 6 minutes per flight With ATC-Wake, this delay is reduced by : 11% (with a capacity increase of 5%) 22% (with a capacity increase of 10%)

16 Safe Airport Development of an innovative acoustic system for the improvement of cooperative air traffic management. The system is based on two passive phased array microphone antennas capable of discovering and tracking aeroplanes up to at least six nautical miles in air and ground.
