One of the things we have not done in our couple months of VFR adventures is night flying. So I thought, what would be a good flight that accomplishes a couple interesting night related things?

1 One of the things we have not done in our couple months of VFR adventures is night flying. So I thought, what would be a good flight that accomplishes a couple interesting night related things? Here is the goal. #1: Have a flight that makes it a challenge to navigate. Have you wondering Am I going the right way? Is that Highway 40? #2: Have a flight that simulates the fact that it is easy to get disorientated at night. #3: Have a flight that simulates the distortion of distance at night. #4: Take the flight out of an area most have not flown in and around. #5: Have a flight that will make you feel like you really accomplished something when you finally get there. The one thing that always happens to me when I have flown at night is that tension goes up. Familiar visual references sometimes disappear and the airports become a lot harder to see and usually transform into black holes with a green beacon. Some of that won t be possible in Flight Simulator because the lights of airports are brighter and more visible from a distance than they are in the real world. But I will try to make it happen! So join me on a flight into the cool evening sky. Get your red map light ready and let s get home from a day in the Mountains. 2 FLIGHT MUST DO S! #1 Fly with the weather I dictate no exceptions! #2 Fly with all the lights off in the room that you fly this flight in! #3 Fly with a clipboard with a printed map and paper #4 Fly with a small penlight or flashlight to view map Tip: You can even get a small piece of plastic wrap and color it red with a red felt pen and tape it over flashlight to get a red light #5 Fly a small single or twin engine piston aircraft (Single is best for views) THE SCENARIO You have just spent the day in Beautiful Asheville, NC. with a buddy. This wonderful town is set in the mountains of Western North Carolina, very near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville, NC Your buddy lives in Hickory, NC about 60 miles give or take to the East off Highway 40. You live on the Eastern side of Charlotte, NC. So you will drop him off on the way and get home for a late supper. Did you know that miles and miles of trees looks very dark at night? Parameters Flight from Asheville to Hickory, NC Flight from Hickory, NC to Wilgrove Airport in Eastern Charlotte, NC Estimated Distance : About 100 miles Time of Day : Night : 1800 hrs Altitude : Look at sectional for best altitude for flight. Remember VFR guidelines.

5 GENERAL OVERVIEW After take-off from Asheville Regional, you will need to fly NORTH of the airport in order to pick-up highway 40, going east. This highway (landmark) will be your primary navigation to Hickory. You will see numerous small airports on the way to Hickory, NC. Don t be fooled! Make sure to look at the sectional to determine a safe altitude for departure and East bound turn out of the mountains. Here is a sectional Overview. Sectional 1 (USE PDF ZOOM to view)

6 Sectional 2 After you reach Hickory, the 321 Highway crosses the 40 and heads south, this will be a good reference for heading towards Charlotte, NC. On the sectional it is the road that runs toward Lincolnton.

7 SECTIONAL 3 After Linconton, you should be able to pick up the 85 East towards Charlotte. (NEXT PAGE CONT.)

SECTIONAL 4 The 85 heads right towards Charlotte and also Charlotte International. Wilgrove airport is on the other side of the city. Have a plan for getting by Charlotte International.
