2 AN OVERVIEW OF THE EAST AFRICA ECONOMY The East African Community (EAC) countries economic growth performance during the past decade has been impressive at 6.2 per cent. Key cities such as Nairobi in Kenya, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Maputo in Mozambique are quickly emerging as hotspots for investment activities with transport corridors and trade routes being forged to connect these cities with the world. Huge potential in terms of infrastructure development as they have begun major transport and logistics expansion programs with strong government support. East Africa region is planning multi-billion dollar infrastructure and construction projects, financed by private and public investors. The Frost & Sullivan research (Growth Opportunities in East Africa s Construction Industries) states that the construction industry in this region is expected to increase its value of US$3 billion in the next five years. 5 EAST AFRICA S UTILITIES SECTOR The East African region is leading the continent s charge to embrace renewable energy, including solar, geothermal and wind power. It is investing heavily in clean energy as demand for power continues to surge and economies grow. East Africa is also geographically located in the tropics, which equates to big solar potential. The government of Tanzania and TANESCO, the state-owned power utility, are driving the installation and procurement of new power plants. Currently, almost half of all power generated in Kenya is from hydro. The government of Kenya (GoK) plans to focus on coal, oil and wind-powered plants to counter the hydro-generation dependence. It is estimated that Kenya has only exploited 200 MW of the geothermal power potential available, which is approximately 3 per cent of the total potential availability. The GoK also plans to develop 5,000 MW of geothermal power by This will translate into a minimum investment of approximately $18 billion. The 250MW Bujagali hydropower plant in Uganda demonstrates that large-scale private power infrastructure projects can be built successfully in Africa. This is the first power project built in Uganda to secure private financing and it provides 49 per cent of Uganda s electricity-generating capacity. MAJOR PROJECTS Ayago Hydro Power Station A proposed 840-megawatt power plant located at Ayago in Nyowa District, Uganda, approximately 38 kilometers by road. It will be developed in two simultaneous phases, along with two other hydropower projects Karuma Power Station (600MW) and Isimba Power Station (183MW) intended to mitigate the power shortages in Uganda and to meet the projected national requirement of 1,130MW by Project Cost: US$ 1.97 billion Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station A megawatt hydroelectric power project in the village of Isimba in Uganda which will be set up on 37,000 acres of land in both Kayuga and Kawali districts. Construction is expected to last three years. Project Cost: US$ million Meru Wind Farm A 400-megawatt wind power plant in Meru, Kenya, the first phase of which will generate 100MW and is to be completed by December It is seen to be the largest wind farm in the country. Project Cost: US$ 270 million Menengai Geothermal Steam Field Development The development of the Menengai steam field to allow for a generation capacity of up to 400MW in the first phase, representing a 20 per cent increase in the installed capacity of the country. Upon completion, the project will help trigger a substantial increase in the provision of reliable, clean and affordable energy equivalent to the current consumption needs of 500,000 Kenyan households, 300,000 small businesses, and some 1,100 GWh to other businesses and industries. Estimated Project Cost: US$ 149 million Disclaimer: All images used in this material are for illustrative purposes only.

6 SECURITY There is massive potential for the security industry in East Africa. The legacy of conflict, lack of political reform, diamond mining and rare earth metal extractions, oil, and a diversity of potential threats are challenges-turned-opportunities for the security market. Kenya is developing a reputation as a leader in the emerging technology sector in the region. The video surveillance market has benefited from the Kenyan technological boom with the increasing amount of video surveillance equipment being deployed. Its position in East Africa allows it to be a gateway to smaller markets like Ethiopia, Tanzania and Mozambique. RECENT PROJECT Kigali Cybersecurity System A system running as a pilot project in Rwanda s Ministry of Finance and at the Rwanda Public Procurement Authority. It was installed by Korea Information Certificate Authority in May 2016 and took three years to complete. Project Cost: US$3 million
