3 Geographical status he continent of Africa extends: 1- From East to West covering four time zones 2- Above and under the equator having summer and winter in the same month in different countries of the continent his lead to diversified daily and monthly maximum demands of energy in the different countries of the continent. 10 Eastern Nile Power rade Ethiopia is endowed with hydropower resources (about 45,000 MW). Egypt and Sudan have oil and natural Gas reserves that can generate electric power. Integration of power systems will permit the use of hydropower generation in Ethiopia during peak time and thermal power plants in Egypt and Sudan during off-peak time. 11 EN Power rade Program Study Phase I : (11 months) Cooperative Regional Assessment of Power rade Opportunities including: Coordinated Planning for Generation and L Developing Strategy for Power rade Investment Plan Pre-feasibility study for three hydropower sites, Mandaya and Border in Ethiopia and Dal I in Sudan including resettlement policy for affected population. 12 EN Power rade Program Study Phase II : (9 months) Feasibility Study of Power Interconnection he outcome of this study, will include: - Regional Investment Program (environmentally, socially, technically and financially viable), - MOU (for implementing the trade strategy and investment program). - Conduct public consultation. 14 Economic Advantage of Electrical Interconnection Decrease in reserve margin. Economies of scale (use of large size units). Decrease of spinning reserve. Benefit from the time domain differences and seasonal, weekly and daily load diversities. Benefit from difference in production costs. Improvement of frequency and voltage regulation. Ability to carryout better preventive maintenance programs. Mutual assistance in emergency conditions or major incidences. 16 Environmental Advantage of Electrical Interconnection Reducing emissions by better usage (less fuel) of primary energy resources, at higher efficiencies. hus reducing GG emissions for the same energy production. 17 Recommendation Expansion of the African Continent electrical interconnection to include all countries. Identify the best mean for the utilization of energy resources in the Continent through performing feasibility studies including geographical and environmental aspects. Face future challenges to join the international market of energy through forming African common market, restructuring of electricity sectors, expansion of electric systems and develop performance level. 18 Recommendation Establish wide information data base including power sectors in general. Improve human resources especially in control and operation centers. he great-industrialized Countries have to help the African Countries in modern technologies and investments. his will help achieving economic benefits partnership for both of them. he donors and the international financial organizations have to support the African countries to develop their infrastructure for the sake of integrated energy projects.
