3 The Mission of The Zanzibar Stone Town Heritage Society is to Promote and Protect the Conservation of the Zanzibar Stone Town; Raise Awareness, Offer Technical Support for Maintenance and Training, Build Partnerships and Lobby, nationally and internationally.

Kutetea sera bora, sheria na maamuzi. yanayohusiana na Mji Mkongwe yenye misingi ya kuendeleza maelewano ya wadau wote.

Kushirikiana na taasisi nyengine na watu binafsi katika ngazi ya jamii, taifa na kimataifa. Kuongeza idadi ya Wanachama wa Jumuiya hususan wale wenye uchungu wa Urithi wetu huu.

10 CHALLENGES: The recent survey that was conducted on one of the questions as to Why ST has become worse? (More than one answer was possible) - Answers and Reasons were: - Drop in Stone Town Cleanliness & Poor Sewerage Systems - Overcrowding & Traffic Increase via the Port Route - Under resourced & Efficiency of Institutions & Govt. Authorities directly related in regulating the Stone Town conservation and Development; - Knowledge of craftsmen on Stone Town Infrastructure and Maintenance of Old buildings -The number of Hotels and Tourists increase versus infrastructure available to accommodate the volume.

11 The delapidated versus repaired Is creating Hotels, Guest Houses, Lodges in Stone Town the way forward for Preservation???

12 Greatest Dangers to Zanzibar Stone Town s Existence (Ref: Stone Town Survey 2012) Weather, Unmanaged and Unregulated Traffic Volume and Increase of Hotels Tourism Visitors Insufficient Incentives for Rehabilitation Poor Rubbish and Garbage Collection Lack of Public Awareness of the Heritage Theft of the doors and Collapsing buildings Lack of Political will and Budget allocation to maintain and further develop the Stone Town Lack of traditional materials to repair houses

(More than 1 answer) Answers: Bad Construction and Low Standard Materials used No enough Maintenance to Stone Buildings Weather, Water Management Systems, Sewerage Overloaded, Overcrowding in Buildings, Piping, Wiring Added floors on top of Existing Floors Fundis do not know technically good repairs Bad designing, Old buildings usually collapse Originally too many floors Cement, Lime, Soil, Corrugated Iron Sheets, Iron Bars Coral Stones, Cement Blocks, Mangrove Poles

20 Conclusion: Further Proposed Solutions before its too late Have reliable and achievable goals, be focused and committed on them; Enforcement of Law Better local leadership, engagement with local people, better education, fundraising initiatives, more linkage between heritage and contemporary culture. Work with different partners (NGOs, private sector, Hoteliers, CBO...) and assure participation of Zanzibar citizens... Make it important for the inhabitants of Stone Town.

22 How other sites are conserved: The Famous and the Rare Red Colobus Monkey at Jozani Forest: More funding to Jozani Forest than Stone Town. Monkeys better than Heritage?
