To better cope with ongoing industrial transformation processes,building the capacity of SMEs as well as global business strategic partnerships needs to be strengthened. This is the intention of Creating Perspectives, an initiative of the East African Community (EAC), the East African Business Council (EABC), the Federation of German Industries (BDI) Deutsche Gesellschaftfür Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German government represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation Development (BMZ). Improving the economic perspectives of EAC SMEs through private sector development by providing technical business management skillsis the key objectives of Creating Perspective.
2 2 3 To turn this idea into practice, the initiative aimed at identifying companies in the EAC region operating in production or manufacturing in various sectors who are ready for scaling up interested to enter into partnerships with German peers. Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, Industry Agriculture is privileged to be part of the project contributed a great deal to its success so far. ZNCCIA was commended to have managed to mobilize its members to take part in this rare opportunity succeeded to get about 11 applicants manufacturing different products in Zanzibar. After a thorough review of more than two hundred entries based on the transparent criteria for selection, the steering committees were satisfied selected 20 out of the 29 Final Applications from Tanzania. Among the 20 companies, there were 8 companies from Zanzibar 5 companies have been selected. The names of the selected companies from Zanzibar include Inaya Zanzibar, Zanto Food, ZANOP, Zainab Bottlers Halais. The five companies of Zanzibar add to 15 from Tanzania Mainl which brings the total number of selected Tanzania s companies to 20. A total of 74 companies were selected from across six East African States namely; Burundi (8), Kenya (17), Rwa (14), Tanzania (20), Uga (13) South Sudan (2). The Zanzibar Chamber of Commerce was pleased to welcome the GIZ program manager Mr. Eckhard Heine who met with the two of the beneficiaries Inaya Halai Zanzibar later the ZNCCIA Executive Director Mr. Hamad Hamad discussed on ways to assist the Zanzibar companies achieve the intended project outcomes sustainability. The project has already kick started by offering beneficiaries with capacity building through needs based training, mentorship coaching, the initial trainings in the area of Digital Marketing Strategies/Social Media Marketing were conducted in Nairobi Business Managementwas conducted t in Kigali. The trainings were organized by GIZ facilitated by German Economic Institute (IW) in Rwa Kenya Association of Manufacturers(KAM) Academy in Kenya. Similar sessions will also take place first quarter of 2019 in Tanzania (Dares Salaam Zanzibar) Uga respectively. Zanzibar Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to have representatives in the Creating Perspectives, Business for Development project take this moment to thank all the members that applied during the call for applications to congratulate the five members that made it to the 74 beneficiaries across East Africa. ZAYEE ZNCCIA Joins the World to Celebrate Entrepreneurship During one week each November, thouss of events competitions in 170 countries inspire millions to engage in entrepreneurial activity while connecting them to potential collaborators, mentors even investors. Powered by the Kauffman Foundation, the initiative is supported by dozens of world leaders a network of more than 15,000 partner organizations. Global Entrepreneurship Week in Tanzania since 2012 has been hosted by Zanzibar Association for Youth Education Empowerment (ZAYEE) which also represented the country in annual Global Entrepreneurship Congress in various cities across the globe. GEW 2018 in Tanzania kick started on the 12th of November whereby there were series of entrepreneurial activities both in Tanzania Mainl Zanzibar. ZAYEE in collaboration with the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, Industry Agriculture (ZNCCIA) organized for activities to honor the week. Some of the activities included stakeholders consultative meetings aimed to better underst the needs of Zanzibar s entrepreneurship ecosystem. The stakeholders meeting was graced by Deputy Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Trade Industry Mr. Ali Khamis Juma who, in his remarks said the role of the government is to create an enabling environment so that entrepreneurs can see opportunities work on them. He also mentioned that the government cannot work with individual businessmen hence the Zanzibar Chamber of Commerce which dialogues with the government on all business related issues advised the business people to continue joining the Chamber membership in order to have a stronger voice together. The Deputy Principal Secretary stressed that, the government alone cannot build the nation because the work of building the nation is a collective responsibility to each every individual the private sector plays a major role in that. On his part, ZNCCIA Executive Director Mr. Hamad Hamad while speaking with the media said, We guide entrepreneurs give them lead on how they can reach markets for their products in the mainl elsewhere, we are planning to enhance that through membership clusters whereby we will guide our members basing on their needs He added that, it is more easier to assist business people in clusters where they become more organized than talking to them as individuals. ZAYEE General Secretary GEW Tanzania Lead Ms. Fatma Mabrouk Khamis indicated that, the partnership with the government ZNCCIA to create an entrepreneurship ecosystem in Zanzibar Tanzania as a whole that brings together entrepreneurs identify opportunities that can foster them in innovation self-employment. The trainings, workshops stakeholders meetings will contribute significantly to the planning of key activities that will be implemented in GEW Tanzania Entrepreneurs had a lot to contribute to the forum shared the challenges in the business environment together with their potential solutions which in turn can be opportunities. 3 4 Zanzibar Chamber signs an MOU with FEI E arlier November the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, Industry Agriculture hosted a delegation of more than 27 high level delegations from Egypt representing the Federation of Egyptian Industries otherwise known as FEI. The delegation comprised high profile people Egyptian captains of Industries who visited Zanzibar for the purpose of meeting with the Zanzibar business community identify key areas of partnerships investment. The Egyptian business community was led by Dr. Sherif El Gabaly who was the head of the delegation Chairman of the African Cooperation Committee. ZNCCIA collaborated with Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), Ministry of Trade Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Second Vice President Office the Egypt Embassy in Tanzania represented by its First Secretary Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim. The forum was graced by the Minister for Trade Industry Hon. Ambassador Amina Salum Ali who opened the forum gave opportunities for match making where we witnessed B2B meetings between Egyptian companies with companies from Zanzibar discussing potential possibilities to work together. After B2B meetings, the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, Industry Agriculture (ZNCCIA signed a Memorum of Understing cementing the business relations between the two entities countries at large. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the FEI business community the Zanzibar business community as well as representatives from government ministries agencies. After the B2B meetings, ZNCCIA ministry of foreign affairs ministry of trade industry led the delegation to meet the Second Vice President His Excellence Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi who was very happy to meet such a motivated group of industry owners. The Second Vice President commented that, the history between Zanzibar Egypt comes a long was thus it is a great pleasure to honor that relationship work together to make the ties even stronger. Mwanamke Chakarika: Bridging the Zanzibar Youth Unemployment Gap In an estimated population of 1.2 million people, women make a huge chunk of population in Zanzibar. For a number of years now the Zanzibar economy has been contributed with the tourism sector, while there is still potential for the tourism sector to keep growing, unemployment rate also keeps growing. This has called for the government to emphasize on youth employment in tourism as well as other sectors of the economy thus the reason for the9th Zanzibar Business Forum theme on youth employment opportunities for public private partnerships. In the 4th of November 2018, the vibrant women led group of entrepreneurs known as Mwanamke Chakarika put together a forum for young entrepreneurs to learn from the best encourage each that it is possible to start small businesses as a group or as an individual. ZNCCIA was part of this breathtaking initiative during his speech, the Executive Director assured the group full support from the Zanzibar Chamber can offer them mentorship, training access to market information for their products. Hamad The Guest of Honor for the forum was Hon. Ambassador Amina Salum Ali, the Minister for Trade Industry who looked so proud of the initiative, saying that the government is ready to support such kind of hard working youths. She added that, the President of Zanzibar His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein is watching all the efforts made by entrepreneurs urged them to continue doing a great job. The Minister commented that, we need to see locally made products in Zanzibar outside Zanzibar because it is in our hs, we can there is no one to stop us, we want to see Zanzibar forge ahead by producing our own products. The forum attracted many participants from all caliber including ministers, principal secretaries, male female entrepreneurs artists from Zanzibar Mainl. Ministry of Trade Industry to meet with the Ministry of Finance Planning to agree to implement removal of 5% trade levy order. Local content conditinality Ministry of Trade Industry in collaboration with Livestock Fisheries initiate special strategy to encourage use of locally made products to meet the local tourism market with the aim to boost local content. (Local content conditionality). To assist youths/entrepreneurs to participate in trade shows/exhibitions in outside the country for the purpose of securing markets for their products. Listing all Union business related challenges present them to the TNBC secretariat so they can submit the same to Council meetings. To present all issues discussed in the Business Council Business Forum to the Council s Committees to be worked upon through a special implementation plan. More vibrant aggressive Chamber ZNCCIA to strengthen the organization for it to be powerful strong through organized training trips oversees gain experience as well as. Business community to participate in government organized oversees delegations by contributing for their own participation. The Forum was urged to initiate sectoral dialogues involving private public sector together for the purpose of identifying areas of partnership in increased productivity youth s employment opportunities. This includes the possibility of using the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in projects implementations. Private sector to consider establishment of empowerment funds together with other financial services providers aiming at offering soft loans to youths entrepreneurs. Discouraged use of chemical fertilizers Livestock Fisheries in collaboration with Ministry of Trade Industry Ministry of Health to prepare special strategy to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers encourage the use of organic fertilizers initiate smart farming (green houses) in vegetable, spices fruits. Also protecting safety, quality stards for such products, meet the tourism market protect the environment as well as consumers health. Livestock Fisheries in collaboration with Ministry of Trade Industry to establish contract farming procedures between buyers/industries youths/entrepreneurs aiming at sustainable productivity increaseing employment productivity. Livestock Fisheries in collaboration with Ministry of Trade Industry the private sector to make use of technology to reduce post-harvest losses including value addition to produces storage. Promoting clove other export cash crops Livestock Fisheries to establish clove nurseries, coconut/palm trees other tree species conduct studies in all areas of agriculture livestock in order to increase production opportunities youth entrepreneurship. To undergo fish stock count to identify number of fish available to attract investors in the sector. Use new technology in fish farming including construction of fish ponds use of cages as well as milk goat keeping for the aim of increasing productivity youth employment. President s Office in collaboration with Ministry of Trade Industry to look into a special plan research of crop production (strategic crops) district wise or regional wise (one region/district/village one crop) to reduce copycatting between producers/ entrepreneurs. Ministry of Information, Tourism Archives in collaboration with growers association, to prepare special sales agreements of products between producers investors especially in the tourism sector. Establish special plan in collaboration with private sector in refurbishment of historical sites add tourism services in those areas considering culture tradition of Zanzibar. Implementing PPP Ministry of Finance Planning to share with the private sector all PPP project information other production service offering. The PPP initiative to give priority to, local investorss to be prioritized. Ministry of Finance Planning to meet with BOT discuss on the possibility to reduce capital to run Bureau De Change in Zanzibar. To establish a program to use constituencies funds House of Representatives Members Members of Parliament in the quest to grow youth employment opportunities.
5 8 Consideration of people with disability young graduates. The Second Vice President s Office in collaboration with ZNBC, were urged to create conducive environment documents that consider people with special needs. To increase employment opportunities to patriotic youths in private sector owned projects especially in tourism sector, security services other projects. To prepare a special database for graduates that will show number, level of education major, experience other related issues for investors to provide employment to youths. To review loans offering procedures advice the possibility of reducing terms of registration an bureaucracy. Ministry of Youths, Culture, Art Sports in collaboration with Ministry of Labor, Empowerment, Elders, Women Children Ministry of Education Vocational Training to offer more education to youths, to increase skills, vocational training, discover talents change mindset so they can enter the employment market Ministry of Youths, Culture, Art Sports to motivate youths to establish associations cooperatives in areas of production especially in agriculture, livestock, fisheries small industries in order to meet the local market tourism market. Search for durable solution to port congestion Ministry of Construction, Communication Transportation in collaboration with all private sector stakeholders, to identify solutions to Zanzibar Ports congestion. Three Ministers (Minister for Construction, Communication Transportation, Minister of Trade Industry Minister of Finance Planning) their Principal Secretaries to meet with 6 man team from ZNCCIA to discuss a viable solution way forward on port congestion.
