1 Te Iringa CCPF Completion Report After a successful application by the Hawkes Bay MTB Club (HBMTBC) and Bike Taupo (BT) to TrailFund for CCPF funding to complete works on the Te Iringa Trail in the Kaimanawa Forest Park, a plan was hatched to improve the trail with keeping all the natural character. In two groups, on separate occasions, members of the HBMTBC and BT rode from Clements Mill Rd through to the swing bridge on the Kaipo River to assess and compare notes on the most appropriate way to maximize the improvements to the trail. After s between BT and the HBMTBC it was decided that the most beneficial way to complete the job would be to first focus on the uphill section of 4.5km from Clements Mill Rd to the old Te Iringa hut site. Linking the ride able sections together where possible, removing excess vegetation, reinstating water control and removing windfall. This work was completed as day works from the start of the trail. The second section; from the old Te Iringa hut site along the ridge, to the beginning of the decent down to the Tiki Tiki Stream would be completed from a camp established by helicopter at the old hut site. The focus of this section would also be to link the ride able sections as well as making the climbing/walking sections as safe and easy as practicable. At the initial stage there was approx. 80 volunteer hours of input for the riding, planning and organizing by the HBMTBC, BT and its track crew made up of experienced trail builders hours from BT contractors. Helisika Helicopters donated the flying in their MD500E to get the trail crew in and out of their camps. This allowed for an extra 6 man days working on the trail with BT supplying fuel, vehicles and equipment to the job. Additional input; Helisika Helicopters donation of flying time, $ Bike Taupo Supply of vehicles, tools, fuel, chainsaws and scrub bars, $ Impel (2010) Limited and McFarlane Contracting reduction in hourly rate, $ Taupo MTB Club donation of their generator for lighting and power, $ The above $ made up of time, equipment and services was donated in addition to the CCPF funding. Breakdown of completed works; 61 individual jobs completed A squeeze at the entrance of the trail Approx. 5km of scrub baring 283 cutouts cleaned/reinstated Total length of track maintenance, windfall removal, vegetation and water control, 8.67km. The breakdown of jobs, locations and descriptions along with before and after images can be found below.
