1 Lt Col D. Richmond Giggleswick School Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Giggleswick SETTLE North Yorkshire BD24 0DE Tel Mob Fax Sept 2017 See Distribution Reference: ENROLletNJV2018 Exercise NORTHERN JACOBITE VENTURER 2018 Saturday 24 March Friday 30 March 2018 Kinlochleven Hostel, Nr Fort William Dear Parent, After an introductory meeting today your child has expressed an interest in taking part in this year s cadet funded Adventure Training week. For most cadets, this also means that they wish to join the Duke of Edinburgh s Award Scheme. Successful completion of the week gives the opportunity to explore some of the most wild and remote areas of the UK whilst developing many personal qualities. Depending on which of the four courses a cadet chooses, successful completion of the week also exceeds the requirements for Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition training, practise and possibly assessment. The Award is justifiably popular and is highly regarded within the community for its many positive aspects. It gives participants opportunities to try out new skills, keep fit, make new friends and learn to become more independent and self-confident. Completion of the Gold Award is a real achievement and requires true commitment, good organisational skills, initiative and the willingness to take on responsibility. However, you and your child should consider carefully before they decide whether to apply to join the Scheme as it will take up a substantial proportion of their leisure time and will invariably produce conflicts with other commitments, such as coursework, family outings, School holidays etc. In order to maximise the benefits of opportunities in the CCF I strongly encourage all cadets to take part in the scheme. For the most experienced cadets, the opportunity to complete multi-pitch rock climbs, winter scrambles over classic mountain ridges, ice climbing tuition or snow hole expeditions are all possible in the mountaineering development week. The course takes place during the first full week of the Easter break and is based in the Highlands of Scotland at the MoD owned Kinlochleven Hostel. We can offer 60 places spread over four possible courses: Mountaineering Development (post Gold DofE) Gold DofE Expedition Assessment WMF - Winter Mountain Foundation which exceeds Gold DofE Expedition Training and Practice SMF - Summer Mountain Foundation which exceeds Silver DofE Expedition Training and Practice This limit allows us to provide quality expedition training and assessment experience, without overstretching our resources. There can be competition for places and the course is often oversubscribed. If necessary, selection will be made based on the level of commitment a cadet has shown to the CCF. I will coordinate a team of Giggleswick staff, commercial and military instructors to ensure that the highest possible standards of instruction can be assured. The WMF package will teach the basic competencies needed to walk in isolated valley locations in winter and may include a snow-hole overnight expedition if conditions allow. The SMF course will teach and practice the skills needed to complete a mostly valley bottom expedition in remote areas, below the snow line. All courses are heavily subsidised by both Giggleswick School and the CCF (a similar course through a commercial provider would cost in excess of 700 plus travel and equipment hire).

2 Progression to Assessment If candidates wish to continue to Gold Expedition Assessment through the CCF, the assessed expedition will take place during the same holiday period in the following year (2019). However, other assessment opportunities do exist please speak to Lt Col Richmond if you would like to know more. The application for Gold Assessment will take place at this time next year. If Gold candidates wish to undertake their assessment in October half term there may be an additional charge of 50 per cadet in addition to any campsite and food costs. It is assumed that successful SMF candidates will wish to progress to Silver DofE Assessment; the dates are likely to fall during the first week of October half term, 2018, but this is still to be confirmed. Consent to attend is given on the same form as that for the Easter Training. All planning and arrangement for this expedition is integral to the Assessment and is therefore the responsibility of the cadets. Please note that for both the Easter course, and Summer assessment, it will not be possible to stay in School for any of these nights after the trip. Costs The cost for the Easter week will be 250. The cost of Silver DofE Assessment is included in this price although candidates will need cash to pay for campsites and food during assessment (approx 30). For Gold DofE Assessment in the following year costs will be kept to a similar amount as the training. This includes : SMF / WMF training or Gold DofE assessment in Scotland see attached programme Equipment Hire (see packing list) All food and campsite costs when training (but not at assessment) Transport to and from Giggleswick to Kinlochleven Costs NOT included: DofE Registration, payable through Mr Keron, 27 for Silver and 30 for Gold. Transport to and from School although rail warrants may be available if moving between MoD courses Personal Equipment (see packing list) Food for the Assessed Expeditions this will be bought by the candidates on the day before their Assessed Expedition, 5 per night is usually adequate Costs of campsites during Assessment Costs for any part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award other than the Expedition A further cost not included in the 250 is that for personal equipment. Good quality summer walking boots (usually 120 or over) and base layer clothing, including socks, are essential purchases along with personal items such as water bottles, knife / fork / spoon etc... A private shopping session at a local outdoor retailer is arranged each year, usually in February, with Giggleswick staff available to offer advice in addition to that provided by the retailer. The CCF can provide all other equipment needed if a cadet cannot provide their own for any of the activities. Winter walking equipment, including boots and all other items in that part of the packing list, will be available at no additional cost if they are needed. A full equipment list is enclosed. Yours sincerely, D. Richmond Lt Col Distribution: Cadets / Parents x 60; EVC; SSI; Staff x 8; Total 70

Students who do not attend sufficient training will not be allowed to proceed to the Qualifying Expedition. NOTE: This amounts to 10 full days on your weekends / holidays, plus a regular commitment after CCF, on top of the other 3 sections of the Award. It is vital that you check that you are free on these dates before you commit yourself fully. Consult the family calendar and check for other extra-curricular clashes (eg County Hockey dates etc). 6 CombinedCadetForce Category Item Off duty wear - T-shirts Off duty wear - Underwear normal wear Note book, biro and pencil in waterproof bag Camera / ipod / mobile phone - optional How Many For one week Prepared Packed Available on Issue Notes: 1. Uniform is not to be worn 2. Valuable items should not be brought the expedition leaders will not be responsible for them. Personal First Aid Kit minimum: Antiseptic wipes Plasters and blister kit Insect repellent, to include ticks Tick removal device e.g. tick card Zinc oxide tape or Compeed blister kit Safety pins Sun screen for lips and skin F15+ Personal medication for the duration of the week NOTES: Item Prepared Packed Boots. These need to offer ankle support and protection, a stiff sole to support the foot to reduce twisting, deep tread (e.g. Vibram) and some waterproofing. Leather or man-made fabric is down to personal choice. Good quality leather is harder wearing but fabric is usually lighter. As a guide, few boots under 120 meet the standards. Four season winter boots will be available for issue to all cadets if conditions are snowy. Thermals. While there are a wide range of brands and prices on the market, in practice all polyester or polypropyene stretchy inner layer fabrics do their wicking job well enough. Fleeces. The very cheapest fleeces are often acrylic rather than polyester: less desirable. For a top layer / thick fleece the main choices are "soft shell" fleeces, these incorporate a windproof/weather resistant barrier in the fabric or nylon/pertex covered fleeces. Legwear. Leggings or school tracksuit bottoms can be worn. Alternatively there are many branded walking trousers, some fitted and stretchy, some loose fitting with zip off legs. Salopettes stay up and don't become untucked, but aren't flexible eg going to the toilet. philosophy is just a thermal or light fleece on the legs and wear your overtrousers/salopettes all the time. Waterproof Jacket. Breathable fabric: Goretex, event and many other options fill the market. It is worth making the investment in a good brand name and making sure the jacket has the necessary features. For climbing: shorter length (but long enough to tuck securely under your harness), breast pockets, map pocket useful, non-detachable hood that fits over a helmet and has good face protection with wired visor. For UK conditions underarm zips are low priority. Heavily insulated ski jackets are not appropriate. Waterproof trousers. Breathable fabric. You should be able to put waterproofs on and off without taking boots off so look for good length leg zips. Small first aid kit. Many brand packs available, but check they meet the minimum listed above. Rucksack. 60 litres Climbing style rucksacks with side compression straps rather than side pockets are the recommended type. Some mountaineers manage with an expandable rucksack for 3 day walks and overnight expeds. Packing is an art learned from experience; whatever size you bring, you will fill and have to carry. Gaiters. Front Velcro opening gaiters, with breathable material around the calf are user friendly. Gloves and Mitts. The ideal gloves would be super warm, snug fitting for gear handling, weather resistant and durable but these do not exist. The main brands all make good but expensive gloves for the mountaineering market. Ski type gloves will do the job: ideally pick a pair with a water-proof but breathable barrier incorporated in the construction, a large cuff that rides over your jacket sleeve rather than a snug elastic cuff, and with leather or strong rubberised fabric on the palm and fingers. A snug fit handles better, a loose fit is warmer. Be wary of designs that are vulnerable to the interior layers pulling inside out when you take the gloves off. For Scotland have at least one cheaper spare pair. Many instructors still swear by woollen Dachsteins. Gloves always get wet, so carry several pairs if you can. Stoves. High quality gas stoves will be provided. Those with pierce type cylinders or petrol stoves should not be brought. SNACKS: For the bus.
