1 Student Opportunity Week 2017 Mountain Biking Monday 1 May Thursday 4 May Dear Parents/Guardians, Student Opportunity Week provides an opportunity for students at NBCS to pursue an area of passion or interest, working with other students across Year Groups to overcome challenges and foster strong relationships. This year, 34 separate programs are being offered as part of Student Opportunity Week, including a variety of expeditions, experiences and projects. Student Opportunity Week will bring a new combination of programs each year, to allow students to experience a range of opportunities and challenges aligned with areas of passion and interest as they progress through the Secondary years. It is expected that during Student Opportunity Week all students will conduct themselves in accordance with the NBCS Code of Behaviour, which is available on the school website in the Parent Download Centre. Program: Mountain Biking Overview: The Mountain Biking Camp will be held at the The Steps Mountain Bike Park which is a part of the Barrington Outdoor Education Centre. The park includes a cross country loop with multiple challenges and a skills area for practicing body position, balance, gearing, braking, cornering and riding obstacles. The Cross Country Loop is 3.5 kilometres of single track suitable for riders of all skill levels. The loop rewards riders with flowing downhill sections, technical climbs and log bridges set amidst a scenic riverside location on the Barrington River. Additional features of the bike park include a Pump Track for a full-body biking workout plus The Playground, a dedicated mountain biking obstacle course with options to suit specific skill levels of riders. The mountain biking experience at The Steps offers fun and challenges for all skill levels. Students will spend time getting to know their equipment as they are introduced to bike maintenance throughout the program and in the evenings. They will develop skills in four different mountain biking disciplines in four different areas as they explore the Dungog Common cross country trails, the Kiwarrack State Forest single track and North Shore trails as well as the Sleepy Hollow and Peerless downhill trails. The program will accommodate intermediate to advanced riders. It is a great way to spend a week, exploring new areas, developing new skills and making new friends. Please note that this program is a customised program for NBCS, and while the school contributes the majority of funds towards it, due to the expensive nature of this particular program and the distance to travel, a $100 surcharge is necessary. 3 Camp Gear List Notes Please note that one of the purposes of the camp is to allow students to learn about themselves by testing them beyond their comfort zone. Having the correct equipment allows them to get the full experience without making it too demanding. The correct equipment also adds to their personal safety and comfort. It is important to remember that at times students may experience adverse weather conditions with little shelter and depending on the level of activity they choose, they may also be required to carry all their equipment on an extended hike. For this reason students are advised to closely follow the equipment guidelines and refrain from packing excess or inappropriate equipment. Personal experience tells us that having appropriate equipment adds to the enjoyment, but experience also tells us that some of this equipment can be very expensive. If camping or trekking is going to be prominent in the future it may be worth investing in quality gear and building up a collection over time. However, if this is not the case, less expensive alternatives often suffice. Some of the items may well be borrowed e.g. wet weather jacket. If you wish to purchase gear from RAG please use our online store a number of suitable items have been marked as school specials. Tips: Label all your equipment with your name and Phone No. When packing always think of lightweight materials that take up less space. While on activity cotton makes you colder on cold days and hotter on the hot days, thermals or synthetic clothing will make you more comfortable. Your equipment will be checked on the first day of the program; any unwanted materials will be stored and returned at the end of program. I give my permission for my son/daughter to participate in the Mountain Biking program. 2. Indemnity: In granting permission for the student named on this permission form to participate in the specified activity I acknowledge and agree that: (a) the activities the student may participate in involve obvious and inherent risks; (b) the School s liability (if any) for injury to or damage incurred by a student as a result of participation in an activity is determined in accordance with the law of New South Wales; (c) the School s limit of liability for injury to or damage incurred by a student is the extent of cover afforded by the student accident insurance policy maintained by the School; (d) such insurance is not a policy of indemnity and the amount of cover is determined by the insurer by reference to the injury, not the cost of treatment; and (e) the student s rights (whether or not exercised on their behalf by another person) are as against the relevant policy, not the School. 3. Medical: In granting permission for the student named on this permission form to participate in the specified activity I: (a) acknowledge and agree that I have ensured that the School holds up to date medical information for the student; (b) acknowledge and agree that I will ensure that any changes will be advised to the School prior to the activity; (c) have made my own assessment as to the appropriateness of the student s participation in the activity having regard to any pre-existing medical condition; (d) accept that the School will not be liable in any way for the aggravation of an existing medical condition arising from the participation of the student in the activity; and (e) release and indemnify the School from any loss or damage howsoever caused arising from a failure on my part to provide up-to-date medical information to the School.

7 Student Consent Form Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre Camp Agreement I agree to my child s / ward s attendance at the below mentioned program Mountain Bike Camp 1-4 May 2017 As parent / guardian I understand that Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre and its instructors will take reasonable care for the welfare and safety of those attending the camp but are not responsible for any accident or sickness otherwise occurring. I acknowledge that going on camp may involve my child s / ward s participation in activities of a hazardous nature, though Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre and its instructors will take reasonable care to minimise risk to participants. I have detailed herein and on any attached pages any disabilities or susceptibilities affecting my child / ward that may place him / her at greater than normal risk. I authorise Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre and its instructors to obtain medical assistance and ambulance transportation in the event of illness or injury as they think necessary and authorise qualified medical practitioners to administer anaesthetic, blood transfusions or any other procedures deemed necessary. I also agree to pay all the cost of any expenses incurred as a result of such medical assistance and ambulance transportation. I acknowledge that I am able to obtain private insurance cover for my child / ward in respect of any accidents or sickness at the camp. Should my child / ward need to be returned home for any reason I will cover any associated costs. I acknowledge that during camp my child / ward may be taken swimming and I give my permission to do so. I consent to my child / ward attending camp on this understanding. Privacy Statement: Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre will collect and store the information you voluntarily provide to enable processing of enrolment for programs/camps. The information will be provided to instructors/guides of the program and their supervisors, where necessary and you consent to this disclosure. Any information provided by you will be stored in a database that will only be accessed by authorised personnel and is subject to privacy restriction. The information will only be used for the purpose for which it was collected. Any information provided by you to Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre can be accessed by you during standard office hours and updated in writing or by contacting us on (02) I also declare that I have read and understand the information within the Student Information Pack/Guidelines and will read the Gear checklist for my child s / ward s safe participation and will ensure they attend with all items listed. I also understand that it is a condition of participation to accurately complete the following medical forms. Media Consent: I agree to allow Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre to use any photographs or video taken of my child / ward at this program for the promotion of its services through promotional DVD or on their websites.
