1 To all Scouts, Explorers and Parents, 74 th St. Luke s Scouts & Apollo ESU Information Letter 1 Wednesday, 15 February 2017 is a plan to take Scouts (from the 74 th ) and Explorers (from Watford South) and Network (from Apollo ESU / Meteor) on an International Expedition to the Country of Liechtenstein in the summer of Initially places will be limited to 20 people (Young persons and leaders) as this is the current limit of transportation. If a particularly large number over and above this 20 wish to attend, this can be reviewed at a later date. As a late addition, it has been requested that we stop over at EuroDisney, this is currently in the plan, but can also be reviewed. Dates & Travel The trip is planned from Saturday 28 th of July, until Saturday 11 th of August 2018 (maybe 10 th ) which we will confirm when the ferry is booked. Current travel plans as proposed below are to drive everybody there. We have considered flying or going by train, but the savings incurred by driving (minibus and cars) are substantial enough that this is currently the preferred option: Outbound Meeting: St. Luke s Church, Langley Way Date Saturday 28th July Time: tba, but probably very early Details: We will take a ferry to Calais, then drive to EuroDisney, where we will spend 2 nights in a nearby campsite. Then on Monday morning we will drive to our destination in Liechtenstein. Return Details: We will leave Liechtenstein on the morning of Thursday 9 th August, drive across Switzerland and France, camp for the night and make it back to Watford at some time in the afternoon of Friday 10 th. Collection Location: St. Luke s Church, Langley Way Time: tba Kit sort date: Saturday 11th August All scouts must travel to and from site in full uniform (shirts, uniform trousers and scarves). Those of you who have other scouting T-shirts etc. are welcome to bring them (I would recommend it), but you must wear proper shirts and trousers/shorts to travel. We will have expedition scarves that you can wear for the journey.

2 All scouts will need to bring along a small proper walking rucksack, including a packed lunch. This must be capable of carrying all they need for 48hrs (incl wash kit and sleeping bag) as we may not get access to the main kitbags for the journey, and we have at least one 2-day trip into the mountains in Liechtenstein for which we will all need to carry our own kit. Cost The cost for this trip, as a change to what you have already been advised, is At this time you will need to provide a deposit of Further payments can be made in a staged manner (post-dated cheques), via a monthly direct debit or by an agreed transfer schedule. We are intending doing some fundraising activities for this trip, and so a figure for the final payment amount will be advised once these are complete. Please make cheques payable to 74 th St. Luke's Watford South Scout Group What to bring You will be issued a kit list for all your personal kit. An example is attached in this letter, this is pretty comprehensive; it may change but contains everything you should need. We will be camping for the 10 days we are there (excluding the night in the mountain hut), so you will need your full camping kit. There are some items on the list that have specific requirements, and these need to be understood and followed, but they need not be expensive. If you have any questions over any of these points, then just ask. If Network have access to a lightweight tent that you could bring with you, that would make my life a little easier; but if not, don't worry we will supply them as well. You must tell me in advance if you are intending bringing your own tent. In addition to all the above you will need the following paperwork: 1. An unexpired British Passport (min 12 months left) 2. An EHIC (a European Health Insurance Card, formally E111) - For more info, see 3. Fully completed PC and permission forms - To be provided There will be plenty of opportunities to spend money on site and on trips out, but I would recommend that no more than CHF70.00 be taken (you may need some Euro s as well). Obviously you will need Swiss Francs to spend in Liechtenstein, but make sure you have a few Pounds Sterling and some Euros for the journey and EuroDisney.

3 I am looking into providing some kind of t-shirt / polo shirt etc, but those going will have a discussion over what they would prefer. You will need to bring a packed lunch with you on the outward journey, and we will arrange another one for the journey home. Pre-Trip Gathering There is an intention to run an overnight walking weekend for all those going to Liechtenstein. The purpose of this is to bond everyone as a team, to assess everyone walking abilities, and to make full assessments of everyone s kit. More details of this will be circulated nearer the time. Electronic Items Please be aware that all electronic items (cameras, MP3 s etc.) are bought at your own risk. They are not insured under our travel insurance. Items that are NOT allowed for under 18 s are mobile phones, speakers and electronic game consoles. There have been instances when young people have used their mobile phone to call home, the home contact or even the emergency services, in situations entirely unsuitable for the message. Due to the risks and social issues raised by these wrong calls, posts and contacts, we ask that no U18 brings any mobile phone of any type. If you wish to bring an MP3 player, that is fine but it must be listened to via headphones, not out loud. Expectations This trip will include 2 days walking in the mountains, as well as the 2 day walking weekend beforehand. It will also require some level of self-reliance and independence. 6 This is an example of the scale and type of kit you will need for this trip. Main Kitbag A soft kit bag (preferably waterproof) of NO MORE THAN 80 litres. Underwear/Socks to last 2 weeks T-Shirts to last 2 weeks Long sleeved top / shirt Long Trousers for walking (not denim). Shorts (not denim) 2 pairs Walking socks 2 pairs Wash Kit & Towel Sleeping Bag Modest sleeping clothes Walking Boots Tea towel Torch Swimming costume (No bikinis) Sun Hat Watch Warm hat / buff Shoes / flip flops / crocks Notes Your kit bag will have to fit inside your tent along with others. No hard shells or wheels. Consider purchasing travel wash to wash your clothes and take LESS Do not bring anything made of denim Specific walking socks for the 2-days in the mountains. A lightweight summer sleeping bag will be best. These are not expensive but will be much more comfortable (in tent and in hut) and smaller and lighter. All young people may end up in 1 room in the mountain hut, so modest PJ s are important. Walking boots must have suitable soles and ankle support. Trainers are not acceptable. Jacket must be waterproof and breathable check label if it doesn t say it, then it s not. Water bottles must be suitable re-useable bottles. Re-used disposable bottles are not acceptable.
