1 Trail Times Official Publication of the Gold Country Trails Council GCTC is an organization committed to develop, maintain and advocate for safe integrated trails for equestrians and other non-motorized users. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE There were over 50 horses and their human partners at the GCTC Member Appreciation BBQ at Lone Grave. The weather was just perfect, and the leaves are turning, bringing a riot of color to the trails. Thanks to everyone who worked to make the BBQ successful. Mary Johnson brought, and setup tables; Debbie Molloy and Barbara Hobbs managed the rest of the setup. Barry Vaccero did the BBQing. Sue Brusin, Barbara Hobbs, Ginny Dix, and Jan Geller marked the trail, and Willie Brusin managed the parking. As usual, everyone brought delicious food to share. If you haven t renewed your membership, please do. We re making a couple of changes to the membership form. Now there is a check box that asks if the information has changed from last year. Please check the box if your information is unchanged. This will significantly simplify creating the membership directory. If you join online, there is now an electronic signature for the liability release. This vastly simplifies ensuring that we have signed liability releases for all members. Starting in January, there will be online availability of the GCTC membership roster, trail issues, and evacuation information. Additional information will be added as requested. The site will be password protected. Current GCTC members as of Jan 1, 2019 will have the password. This information will be an additional benefit for GCTC members. United Trails Day was a great opportunity to network with individuals in Woods Riders and BONC. We all share a love of the outdoors and trails. Remember, when you encounter other people on the trail, always be courteous and polite. We do far better rather than being confrontational. The November meeting on the 13th is our Thanksgiving feast, and the election of new officers and board members for next year. I m looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting. Happy Holidays to all of you! Helen Harvey, President GCTC POTLUCK THANKSGIVING FEAST & MEETING (Everyone s Invited!) 3 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL REMINDER If you have not already done so, please renew your membership now. The membership fee is $25 for an individual. A household/family membership is also only $25. Easiest way to renew is to go to and click on the JOIN US tab. You can pay and sign the liability release online. Or, if you prefer to pay by check, you may download and print a membership form and liability release which can be mailed in. If your renewal is not received by December 31, 2018, you will no longer receive GCTC benefits among them the member-only notifications since you will be removed from that list. If you joined GCTC in 2018 on or after June 1, your membership extends through September 2019 and you do not need to renew now. If any of your contact information has changed, however, please fill out a new GCTC membership form or changes to chasechc@gmail.com. Do not hesitate to contact Cathy Chase ( / chasechc@gmail.com) if you have questions about the status of your membership. SKILLMAN HORSE CAMP GUIDED RIDE The August 18th guided ride out of Skillman Horse Camp was a lot of fun. GCTC volunteer guides Amy Umpleby, Cathy Scott, Linda Lanzoni and Lori Codey hauled our horses in for the morning rides. We were greeted by a bunch of happy human and equine campers. With four guides, we were able to organize into small groups of riders matched according to their preferred distance & pace. We enjoyed showing the 12 equestrian campers some of the favorite trails that are easily accessible from Skillman, explained trail signage, intersections, and pointed out routes on maps we provided. We answered a lot of questions about GCTC s mission, as well as the trails and campgrounds our club sponsors. Everyone had an awesome time. Each group rode from 2 to 3 hours and it was a truly rewarding experience. We had a lucky day - some of us ventured onto Towle Mill Loop and Stanton trails, and still no bees or motorcycles were encountered! After the ride the guides headed home and the campers and horses relaxed and planned their next trail rides out of Skillman. The lack of showers in camp didn't deter one hearty cowgirl from taking a "bath"! ~ Submitted by Cathy Scott Page 3

4 UNITED TRAILS DAY OCTOBER 13, 2018 United Trails Day had its beginning in 2008, when Joe Chavez of the Tahoe National Forest brought members of Gold Country Trails Council, Bicyclists of Nevada County and Nevada County Woods Riders together to plan a work day where they would work collectively on local trails that they shared. The idea was not only to conduct volunteer trail work, but to have the different user groups meet, work together, and share insights with each other. The groups have been participating annually each October ever since. On a beautiful fall day in October, 33 GCTC members contributed to a total of 80 plus volunteers including NCWR, and BONC members and joined by Motion Pro (a motorcycle parts business) to work on a portion of the Towle Mill Trail off of Burlington Road near Skillman Campground. The large group of volunteers met at Skillman for assignments and safety talk by Paul Hart, Trails Manager for the Yuba River Ranger district of the Tahoe National Forest. Volunteers were encouraged to work with members from each user group, not just with people they knew. GCTC Trail Patrol members participated on horseback to trim the high branches, as well as be featured in the photo of the user groups. A portion of the Towle Mill trail was rerouted to eliminate an area with drainage issues. Brush was cut back, both high and low, to improve passage and sight lines on other portions of the Towle Mill trail. With the great number of volunteers, there was also time spent cutting brush on parts of the Hallelujah and Dog Wood trails. After the work, the volunteers returned to Skillman Campground to socialize and enjoy the delicious lunch prepared by Debbie Molloy and crew. It was a great day to meet new people and say hello to those who come each year to participate in maintaining the trails in the Tahoe National Forest that are used and enjoyed by all user groups. A big thank you to the significant number of GCTC members who attended and supported this event giving credibility to the GCTC mission and involvement in keeping local trails available. ~ Mary Johnson Page 4
