3 CONTRIBUTOR S CORNER ICO Red Rock Adventures in Sedona Text and Photos by Bill Tayler. During Thanksgiving break, San Diego ICO took a group of 8 students from the Hawking 2 STEAM Charter School on a six-day camping trip to Sedona, Arizona. Four of them had never been on a camping trip, and this was a great introduction to it! On the way to Sedona we stopped at the Painted Rock Petroglyph site near Gila Bend. It was a beautiful night to sleep under the stars, so that s what we all did no tents to block the view. In Sedona, the cold mornings got started with the singing of coyotes just before dawn, followed by hot chocolate and pancakes, and then it was time to explore the red rock trails. We hiked up Long Canyon past where the trail ends and scrambled up to a beautiful lunch spot on a red rock ledge with views up and down the canyon. We also hiked up the far reaches of Fay Canyon, which required some exposed, off-trail rock scrambling on the ledges that line the canyon walls. And we hiked and climbed all over the red rock formations at Soldier Pass Arches, Broken Arrow/Chicken Point, and Boynton Vista. And on the morning we left, we made the obligatory climb up Bell Rock. After six days of nonstop activity, cold nights and no showers, you d think the kids would be ready to go back home. But no all of them wanted to stay longer. Camping in Sedona over Thanksgiving break has become a yearly tradition for us, and we re looking forward to more of it in 2019!

10 LEADER TRAINING The Wilderness Basics Course Outing Leader: A Higher Calling for Leadership The Wilderness Basics Course or WBC is a vibrant course in basic wilderness hiking and backpacking skills. Every year WBC educates 200 plus students. Training includes four weekend wilderness trips where students learn a variety of skills. These trips need Chapter Outings Leaders (COLs) who can safely guide, teach and mentor students in an array of subjects and activities. Wilderness Expertise: Exceptional leaders are critical to the success of WBC. COLs must have specialized knowledge of the wilderness setting. This knowledge includes the terrain, animals, highlights, hazards, flora and fauna in the areas where they lead. COLs are experienced graduates of WBC, trained in land navigation, and are first aid or wilderness first aid certified. Expectations of the WBC Leader: The WBC leader s priority is to the students. Leaders plan and lead trips that allow time and space for students to learn new skills, make mistakes and discover their ability to safely participate in wilderness activities. WBC s goal is to provide basic wilderness education to San Diego residents of most physical fitness levels. The day hike is designed to help students decide on which trips they are suited to take although students don't always know their limits. WBC leaders have the experience to screen students and are open and flexible to meet student and class needs. New COLs are offered mentor-ship through assisting experienced leaders or including experienced assistants on their trips. Weekend Outing Coordinators are always there to help. WBC is a fun experience for students and leaders. Although the requirements to lead for WBC are of a higher calling, we believe that our volunteer leaders represent the finest of the Sierra Club and are directly cultivating the new generation of wilderness explorers! Thank YOU for your service! Melody Eues- WBC San Diego Overall Outing Coordinator
