1 On the Trail Fall Campout and Trail Ride In spite of a forecast for nasty weather, the fall campout and ride was a success. The forecast called for low temps and high winds with wind chill factors below zero. C a s c a d e Q u a d S q u a d N e w s l e t t e r Volume 1, Issue 4 That intimidated a few folks and the turnout was a little lighter than expected. In spite of that, most of the biscuits and gravy were devoured. The forecasters were a little off in their prediction. It was cold, but it was clear and sunny and little wind developed. Riding conditions were pretty good. Ten riders took to the trail and headed up Bethel Ridge into the sunshine. It was chilly at 12 degrees, but the clear blue skies made for great views from the top of the ridge. After the ride, the members spent time getting warmed up and visiting around the campfire. Then, the group headed to the Woodshed for a great meal to cap off an enjoyable day. Thanks to Scott and Loraye for coordinating this event and preparing breakfast for everyone. 3 Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 3 Buy/Sell/Trade FOR SALE: Set of four Elka Stage 2+R shocks for Outlander G2 1000/800R Purchased 6/12/2013, installed, and ridden twice. Sold quads due to injury and Elkas now for sale. Current springs set up for 175 lb rider and they were perfect right out of the box. I'm fairly sure Elka will exchange springs for you at a nominal cost. I suspect they will also work just fine on the 650 and 500 G2 chassis as well, and my understanding is that the G2 Renegade chassis is exactly the same. It's true what you read, Elkas will really transform the handling! They literally allow you to ride about 10 mph faster over the same terrain due to better suspension control. $2,000 new, save $750, sell $1,250 Contact: Randy, or randy@romeolima.com 6 ft Werner ladder for sale...still has the stickers on it...and a few drops of paint Walmart lists it for $55 Home Depot...$59 Will sell it for $30... call Tim Two pair of v-bar ice chains for truck or suv. 4 Page 4 On the Trail New green dot roads to open in DNR s Wenas area Scheduled for the spring 2014 recreation season, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will open approximately six miles of green dot road to vehicular access on the south side of Manastash Ridge. Managed by DNR s Southeast Region office, the Wenas recreation area is located southwest of Ellensburg, Washington. It is a popular destination for hunters, hikers, bird watchers, off-road vehicle enthusiasts, equestrians, snow mobile riders, and those who enjoy dispersed recreation such as back country camping. This fall, DNR made the decision to close the area s W4210 road, which is approximately two miles in length. This allowed for funding to open and manage the new section of road. DNR Southeast Region Manager Todd Welker explains, Earlier in the year, several members of the public approached DNR asking us to consider enhancing public access into Hudson Creek. Our staff assessed the area, made some road improvements, and determined we could promote better recreational access. Users weren t requesting more miles, but rather a better quality of miles. The new section offers them an improved experience. The new section of green dot road, titled Hudson Creek Loop, will open motorized vehicle access to the W5620 and W5600 green dot roads. The new section is outlined in yellow on the map.

5 Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 5 Ride Report - FS 613 A few of the club members known as the Midweek Riders tackled the 613 and Grey Rock trail in the Ahtanum in mid November. The Midweek Riders, by the way, consist of mostly members who are retired and have the time to ride during the week. On this occasion, Bob Schafer, Bob Nelson, Tim Dunn and Ken Didion headed out from the Nasty Creek corrals traveled out Buck Ridge to Nasty Creek Flats and then on up the Ewe Neck to the junction of Forest Service road 613. We followed the 613 along Divide Ridge past Dome Peak and Strobach Mountain to the junction of the C1000 Greendot road near Louie Way Gap. That portion of the trip was quite challenging with snow, steep grades and significant obstacles in the form of boulders and downed trees. We returned to Nasty Creek on greendot roads and covered about 34 miles all together. Although very challenging, the ride was quite enjoyable with conditions that varied considerably along the way.

6 Page 6 On the Trail Ride Report - LT Murray Saturday, November 16th Twenty riders participated in the ride on the LT Murray Wildlife Area west of Ellensburg. We staged out of the parking area at Watt Canyon Rd and headed out on the Hutchins Road. A portion of the group split off and took the Tamarack Ridge Road meeting back up with the main group near Tamarack Springs for a break. After lunch near the old Fish and Wildlife cabin, a few of the riders headed back to the staging area while the rest of the group continued to explore the LT Murray and logged a total of 54 miles.

7 Volume 1, Issue 4 Page 7 Ride Report - Ahtanum On November 23rd, a fairly good size group of members gathered at the Ahtanum Sno Park for an attempt to circumnavigate Darland Mountain. Little did we know that this would turn out to be one of the more interesting rides in quite a while. Bob Sherwood, Tim Dunn, Bob Schafer, Howard Barnes, Scott and Loraye Gendron, Jeff Dekker, Gordon Vorenkamp and Ron Harris headed out at about 9:30 traveling west on the Middle Ford road. While the roads were bare starting out, as we gained altitude we started to run into icy conditions. By the time we reached Eagle s Nest the snow was getting deep and we encountered some snowmobilers who had their trucks and trailers stuck in the road. Navigating around them, we continued past Clover Flats and on up to Darland with the snow getting deeper as we went. Up on the open ridge approaching the peak of the mountain, we began to hit snow drifts and the first winchfest of the season commenced. Almost everyone managed to get stuck at least once, while some riders blessed us with repeat performances. One thing is certain: a winchfest will warm you up on the coldest days! After finally getting everyone unstuck and turned around, we headed back from whence we came. Gordon, who really enjoys zig-zagging his ATV through the deep snow, had a minor incident. Rounding a corner in the road, there was Gordon standing next to his machine which was on its side. Guess he zigged when he should have zagged! Fortunately, the deep snow cushioned his departure from his machine and he was unhurt. Once his machine was back on the rubber, we continued our retreat with Tim heading out to take pictures of the group further down the road. Back at Treephones Campground we gathered at one of the picnic tables for lunch in the sunshine. At that point, someone noticed that Gordon was no longer with the group. After some consultation, it was determined that Gordon was the first one down the trail after Tim had left the group to take photos. Tim indicated that the first person to come down the road was Bob Schafer, not Gordon. We were a little mystified as to where he could have gone as the only tracks that we had seen leaving the road were snowmobile tracks. After some searching, it was discovered that Gordon s ATV tracks left the road following one of the snowmobile tracks. Scott Gendron followed on foot and eventually tracked him and his machine down. With assistance from some kind-hearted snowmobilers, Scott, Gordon and his ATV were eventually returned to the main road near Clover Flats. Most of the group continued on down to the Sno Park after a pretty exhausting day. Tim Dunn, Bob Schafer and Ken Didion took a little jaunt over White s Ridge, down McClain Canyon, up the North Fork and made the Deadhorse Flats loop. They encountered lots of elk tracks on the Deadhorse Flats road and one adventurous jeeper traveling in the opposite direction. A very interesting day to say the least.
