1 On the Trail August Campout and Meeting The Club s August meeting will be conducted at the annual summer campout and will be held on August 23rd. The meeting will take place after dinner and elections will be held during the meeting. The dinner this year will be provided by Famous Dave s Barbeque. So, no one has to spend time preparing food for the dinner. Famous Dave s will do all the work and provide a great meal. All you have to do is show up, and, oh yeah, pay the measly $5 per person fee to offset the cost. If you would like to fix something special for dessert, that would be greatly appreciated. C a s c a d e Q u a d S q u a d N e w s l e t t e r Volume 2, Issue 7 July 2014 Special points of interest: August Campout Ride Reports Buy/Sell/Trade All the details will be ed to you soon with a response requested if you will be attending.

2 Page 2 On the Trail Ride Report - Nasty Creek In mid-june two exploratory rides were conducted to check on the snow conditions and limits of travel from Nasty Creek heading west. The route utilized was from Nasty Creek north to the spider web and then west on the Strobach Mountain jeep trail. It was found that getting to Strobach Mountain and Dome Peak were easily accomplished. Any travel north or south from those locations was limited by considerable snow in sheltered areas along the 613. It was obvious that it would be at least a few more weeks before it would be possible to include the 613 in any loops to other roads for round trip travel. As is usually the case when encountering challenging conditions, some winching and expert riding made the rides very interesting to say the least. During one of these rides, Chuck Hampton conducted a demo ride on one of the new 50 Sport Trail Wildcats by Arctic Cat, generously supplied by Valley Marine. He must have been very impressed with its performance because, a short time later, he traded his RZR in on a new Wildcat. A stop along the Strobach Mtn. jeep trail Mt. Ranier and Rimrock Lake from Strobach Mtn. Continued on Page 3

4 Volume 2, Issue 7 Page 4 Ride Report-Ahtanum On Sunday, July 6th, club members gathered at the Ahtanum sno park for a day of riding. The group split up with Gary and Pam Kingsboro and Ron Harris and his friend Linda opting to take a leisurely ride up and over Darland Mountain. The remainder of the group headed to the Jackass Road with the intention of a lunch stop at Blue Slide Lookout. This group consisted of Scott Brock, Bob Schafer, Neely Moore and his grandson, Ben, Greg Schlieve, Troy Reynolds, Dana Hanson, Dick Culver, Dale Swartout and Ken Didion. With stops along the way to enjoy the fantastic scenery, the group arrived at their destination and enjoyed a relaxing lunch while admiring Mount Ranier from Blue Slide Lookout. From there, the group headed down the trail to Blue Lake where Greg demonstrated his new RZR s capabilities. He easily climbed the steep grade to the top of the ridge overlooking the lake without even getting a high speed start. He just approached the slope and powered his way up. Big tires with good tread and lots of power make all the difference. From Blue Lake, the group continued to the North Fork road and headed up to Darland Mountain to take in more scenery. The skies were clear and visibility was great. Besides Ranier and Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson in Oregon were readily visible. The next stop was made at the Eagle s Nest. When traveling the Middle Ford, it is almost mandatory to swing into the Eagle s Nest Day Use area to make the short walk up to the cliffs overlooking Greens Pocket and Shellneck Creek. There is always a chance that you might spot mountain goats in this area. None were seen on this occasion. Credit must be extended to the DNR for the work that they performed this spring on the Middle Fork and North Fork roads. These roads have been graveled and graded, making travel on them very comfortable. Use caution, however, as the smooth surface can tempt you to travel at higher speeds. As Ken Didion was leading the group back down the Middle Fork, his speed crept up to about 35mph. Rounding a corner, he was presented with the sight of a mule deer doe standing in the center of the road. Fortunately, both Ken and the deer reacted quickly. He braked and slid sideways and she jumped out of the way. They did not miss each other by much, but it is a lesson learned. While it is tempting to push our machines on occasion, one must always keep in mind that there are others using these roads, including wildlife. Use caution on the curves and always keep right in case of oncoming traffic. All the riders returned to the sno park at around 4:00pm after a very enjoyable ride encompassing 35 miles of travel. Dana Hanson on the left and Troy Reynolds on the right as they head down the washed out and rough trail from Blue Slide Lookout headed for Blue Lake. Continued on page 5
