8 SAVE OUR WATER from Invasives Invasive species are increasingly threatening our local waters and can greatly impact our fisheries. What are they? Invasive species are plants or animals living outside their known natural range. They ve been introduced accidentally or intentionally by human activities. They harm the environment, economy and society. How are they dangerous? Invasive species may feed on native species or compete for food. They introduce new parasites to native species. They are one of the leading causes of threatened or endangered species. Do your part Do not release live bait. Empty your bait on land. Freeze or salt bait to use later. Drain water from your boat, including the motor, livewell and bilge. Remove all visible plants and organisms from your boat and gear. Put them into a garbage. Remove all invisible organisms from your boat and gear by: rinsing with hot water spraying with high pressure water drying in the sun for five days KEN WHILLANS Resource Management Area Invasive species are most commonly spread by hitching a ride on a boat, trailer, fishing gear or equipment, including bait buckets.
