Five sons of the Newcomer family are listed on the Funkstown memorial, four on one side as serving in the war, and one son is listed on the other side among those who were killed. Private James Newcomer of Co B 328 Infantry died on the Moselle River, France, September 9, On November , an armistice was signed to end the direct fighting in World War I. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, Western Maryland Regional Library has created a webpage at digital.whilbr.org that highlights Washington County s service men, nurses and YMCA workers.
