1 CLUB OFFICERS LOOKS EAST The Weekly Newsletter of The Rotary Club of Ipswich East Edition th March 2016 Club website : Orwell Walk Website: FaceBook page: Charity Number: Tuesday 8th March Lunchtime bell rings at 12.55pm Business Meeting Duty Rotarians: Dick Jeffery & John Hutton President: Michelle BevanMargetts President Elect: John Button Vice President: Nigel Farthing Secretary: Tony Baker Asst Secretary: Martin Westlake Treasurer: Neil Hewitt March Birthdays Brian Collings Martin Westlake Ed Nicholls Steve Runnacles Allan Gosling Last Week s Speaker : Mike Southgate The Samaritans is probably one of the most wellknown of our national charities but may also appear to be low profile it is essentially a listening post does not offer advice and does not pass judgement does not keep records of conversations it just listens. It was in 1953 that Chad Varah founder the first Branch in London and ten years later in 1963 that the Ipswich & East Suffolk Branch came into being, initially at St Stephens Church in the Buttermarket, then moving to Coytes Gardens before spending twenty years in the multipurpose building at 19 Tower Street, In 1994 it moved to its current premises at 140, St Helens s Street, Ipswich. Mike Southgate guided us through the purpose and running of the organisation it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year. Contact may be made by telephone, text, or personal visit the majority being, as might be expected, by telephone. The local Branch is not in itself always open, but a switching service ensures that all calls are swiftly answered. Apart from a small Head Office staff who are salaried, everyone else are unpaid volunteers and this is a most important aspect. The Ipswich Branch should ideally have around 100 volunteers attached currently it is of the order of between 80 and 85 so if anyone of our Members feel they would like to assist, they would be most welcome. A very comprehensive training programme is followed, over the best part of a year before a volunteer becomes fully competent. Whilst the majority of contacts are genuine, such is our modern day manner that a number of calls can be offensive which can result in the volunteer requiring counselling a sad commentary of such a worthy cause. A very good summary of The Samaritans from a caller is contained in one of their information leaflets Samaritans are there when all your friends are asleep and you re alone in the world. When you re full of thoughts you don t understand, it s good to get them out Mike s address was followed by a large number of questions.sue Hall provided an excellent Vote of Thanks. On this occasion, we were pleased to welcome an unusually high number of Rotarian guests from Ipswich, Ipswich Orwell, Felixstowe and Woodbridge Deben. 4 ORWELL WALK FISHPONDS CHECKPOINT The Rotary gazebo we use at Fishponds is showing its age and losing some of its hangars. It takes a long time to erect and if it is windy (nearly every year) we have to tie it to trees to stop it blowing away. The ground down there is also rock hard and tent pegs do not go in very easily if at all. It has been suggested that there will be more runners this year who will arrive at Fishponds earlier than previous walkers, and we have only just been ready for those! Therefore do any Rotarians own or have access to a camper type van, or Transit with side door, which the team could use for storage on the day? Nothing larger could be parked down there as we need to leave room for one car and the supplies vehicle to turn round. The owner would obviously have to be with the vehicle but the transfer window is still open. It may be possible to borrow a folding gazebo as well to link to the vehicle. Any offers or other suggestions greatly appreciated. John Goodship Thank you from East Anglian Sailing Trust Dear Michelle, It was a pleasure to see you and Ross at the EAST Waterside Community Centre on Saturday and to receive the lifejackets. Your support is greatly appreciated. Please convey our thanks to your fellow Rotarians. Kind regards, Geoff Chairman East Anglian Sailing Trust. Thank you from Citizens Advice following recent donation...
