Edition 20 January 2017 FOREWORD BY THE MASTER Dear Glovers, The Christmas and New Year holidays provided me a short, but very welcome, break in the middle of two months which were full of Livery and City events, covering a number of activities in which we as Glovers are involved. But the period is also marked with sadness; we mourn the passing of Liverymen Fred Strong (1988) and Alan Millett (1996) as well Jenny Gardner, wife of Past Master John Gardner and mother of Liveryman Andrew Gardner and Irene Jennings, wife of Past Master Roy Jennings and mother of Liveryman Rebecca Jennings-Evans. I have been able to see at first hand the value of our involvement and contributions and I have been delighted to represent the Company on many occasions including: Celebrating the anniversaries of the grant of their Royal Charters of other Livery Companies: the Cutlers 600 th and the Scriveners 400 th an A visit to KESW to meet our bursary student, a delightful young man who is doing well in his A Level work and is known for his energy and helpfulness around the school. Attending the City of London Academy Islington (with whom we are developing a relationship) for their annual Awards Evening in the presence of the Princess Royal. Travelling to Bennett Safetywear in Liverpool to present Long Service Awards to four employees who together have been with the company for 120 years. The Master and Past Assistant David Bennett with recipients of Long Service Certificates at Bennett Safetywear, and with service ranging from 25 to 40 years. Accompanied by the Mistress and Wardens, presenting to the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress at Mansion House sets of fine English gloves generously donated by Dents and which clearly delighted them both.
Strengthening our friendship with the Safran Guild in Basel by attending their important annual luncheon for distinguished guests from politics, culture, the economy and society in Basel and its county. The Renter Warden and I, and our wives, were honoured to be invited and made very welcome by the Safran Meister, Liveryman Michael Geiger. The Master and Renter Warden with spouses and Safran Glovers: Meister Michael Geiger, Lukas Stutz, Michael Kessler and Peter Pardey Looking ahead, our next Livery event is the Luncheon on 7 th February at Painters Hall where we will be (over) full and then 26 th April for Common Hall followed by a Livery-only supper. This will provide an opportunity for us to discuss topics of current importance. On the Social front, we visit the exciting London College of Music on 15 th February, the Shire Horse Society s Annual Show on 18 th March and Bath on 21 st April to see our Glove Collection at the Fashion Museum and to visit other places of interest. Debbie and I very much look forward to seeing you at these events. SUPPORT THE GLOVERS PANCAKE RACERS 28 TH FEBRUARY! Come and support the Glovers Pancake Racing Team at Guildhall Yard at 11am on 28 th February. You can also book lunch afterwards, if you wish, at butler@btinternet.com or ring by 22 nd Feb. Viewing is free. Lunch tickets cost and cannot be purchased on the day. THE GLOVE COLLECTION TRUST The Trustees intention is to feature different gloves in each Newsletter and we thought we would show you some from the General Collection for a change. These are a pair of ladies pale cream leather glacé daywear gloves, possibly French of the 1920s, full pique stitching but cornered; machine embroidery on the cuff lining, which can be worn as a 4BL or with the cuff turned back. Above are a pair of ladies white leather glacé Edwardian daywear gloves with fine Brosser outseams stitching, with a scalloped punchworked cuff; 2.5 BL, palm vent press stud and three heavy braid type points, black contrast stitching.
They have a long palm vents with a press stud, with a three points crochet effect with grey contrast. Both pairs are so elegant, if only we could walk around nowadays with gloves like these? THE SHOREDITCH TRUST KEEPING EAST END BABIES WARM One of the Glovers nominated charities is the Shoreditch Trust. Based in Hackney, it works with residents to support them to improve their health, wellbeing, social networks and opportunities. Many of their clients are facing complex challenges. The Trust s programmes aim to make positive changes in their lives. At Christmas 2016 the Glovers donated 80 pairs of baby mittens. Former Prima Ballerina at the Royal Ballet Jaimie Perrson, (left) now a director of the charity wrote saying Thank you! Such a kind gift, our new Mums with wee babies will be thrilled to receive the baby mittens. Jamie is very enthusiastic about her work and she has offered to visit the Glovers and talk about the work that she and others do for the Trust. SWANS GLOVES ROSES AND PANCAKES Some of you may remember that during Past Master Alison Gowman s year the Company were photograghed on occasions by Martin Parr who was undertaking a project about the City and its traditions. He photograghed the Glovers presenting gloves to the Lord Chief Justice as well as taking pictures of the banquet at Mansion House. The former appeared in a City rag and shows the Beadle and the Clerk nervously attending the the attire of the Master of the day! There is now an exhibition of his work running at the Tower of London so if you are in town and have some time to burn you could do a lot worse than to go along and have a look, and spot some those taken of the Glovers. Details are at: LIVERYMAN BELINDA DONOVAN INTERVIEWS THE LORD MAYOR
When not being a Glover, Liveryman Belinda Donovan is a Councillor in, and the former Mayor of, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. She was given access to interview the Lord Mayor for the London Mayors' Association newsletter and was given permission to reprint that article for the Glovers. Herewith the article which was published on 12 th December 2016: I had the great pleasure recently of catching up with Dr Andrew Parmley, The Lord Mayor of London I start by asking Dr Parmley the difference between a Borough Mayor and The Lord Mayor of London? The Lord Mayor of London is the UK Financial Services Ambassador representing Industry throughout the UK and he travels widely Belinda Donovan with Rt Hon The Lord Mayor, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley abroad - Qatar and Kuwait are up to visit next along with Malta which will soon have assumed presidency of the Council of the EU. The Lord Mayor also links up abroad with Embassies, socialising with ex-patriates. Recently he has met The President of Portugal and eight members of The Royal Family, he has also met with The Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, his feet obviously never touch the ground! His role, as with other Mayors, Speakers and Chairs is non Political. The Lord Mayor is Head of The London Corporation and chairs two chambers, one being the Court of Alderman which consists of 25 people, the other being The Common Council which consists of 125 people in total; he is also ex-officio Rector of City, University of London and also Admiral of the Port of London. The Lord Mayor tells me that neither he, the Aldermen or Common Councillors receive any money for the work that they put in which I would not have thought is widely known. Dr Parmley is a member of no less than an impressive 18 Livery Companies, the Lord Mayor looks after the Livery Companies and is voted in by them. Tomorrow Dr Parmley receives some Gloves from the Glovers of whom I am proud to be a Member. He has on display in his office a magnificent organ shaped cake complete with superbly detailed icing sugar music from another Livery Company as well as a wonderfully ornamental sword which he was recently presented with, 'the Brighton Rock' The Lord Mayor takes a keen interest in the Committee that looks after the City Bridges, but the Charity I find most fascinating of all personally is The City Bridge House Estate which still has monies from the rents from the houses on the old London Bridge as well as the toll charges when travellers had to pay to cross. This, due to the huge accumulation of funds gives a staggering 20 million to charities each year. This Charity funded the Millennium Bridge. The City of London has a wide range of excellent Schools, City of London School, also the CLSG, The Freeman School, John Cass Primary School, City of London Academy, and City of London University as well as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
As far as culture is concerned, The City has The Barbican, home of The London Symphony Orchestra, Milton Court and The Museum of London to name but a few. The City Corporation is also the fourth largest funder of Arts. The City of London Corporation is the Police Authority for the City of London Police and is the Lead Authority on Economic Crime. I ask about Dr Parmley's Charities and these are supporting The London Symphony Orchestra, The St Paul's Cathedral Trust as well as Music in Hospital, having really helped my mother recently after a stroke by playing her great favourite the New World Symphony I can especially relate to that one. The Lord Mayor is an extremely gifted organist - I have had the pleasure of hearing him play already and I know I for one will be delighted to attend his performance of Camille Saint-Saens on the 14th March at St Paul's Cathedral CITY LIVERY BRIEFINGS 2017 These early evening events ( pm) are aimed at introducing Liverymen and Freemen to the City of London Corporation and its links with the Livery. Taking place at Guildhall, they have been scheduled for the following dates: Wednesday 8 February 2017 Tuesday 10 October 2017 Monday 6 November 2017 to book on to these or any of the briefing courses set out below, please visit or contact me and I will help with the booking. THE LORD CHIEF JUSTICE CARRYING THE GLOVES OF OFFICE The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, with the Lord Chancellor, Elizabeth Truss and carrying the gloves with which he was presented by the Company at a ceremony at the Royal Court of Justice in July 2017 THE MASTER WELCOMES 3 NEW FREEMEN
The Master welcomed 3 new Freemen at a short ceremony at Cutlers Hall on Monday 12 th December They are Michael Burgess, Robert Lakic and David Jefferys introduced by Rodney Jagelman, Roger De Courcey and Ann-Marie Jefferys. GLOVERS IN THE NEWS Congratulations to Liveryman Paul Holder and his wife Congratulations to Rick Wakeman on reaching No6 in the album Annemiek on the arrival of Freddie on 12 th December 2016 charts with his latest composition Piano Portraits.
Congratulations to Dominic Sedgwick, the Company Bursary student at GSMD in 2014, on securing a place at the Royal Opera House Congratulations to Liveryman Joanna Barker who was in a major feature in the FT and was honoured for her philanthropic generosity in founding Target Ovarian Cancer. WHY NOT REPRESENT THE COMPANY AT SPORT Just a reminder that the Company gets involved in a number of sports and those responsible for running them are always keen to hear from Members old and new who may be interested in representing the Company whilst also having a fun day/night out with like-minded people. As a reminder, these are the key contacts: Golf Michael Orr Clay Pigeon Shooting Julian Lidstone Bridge Jonathan Grosvenor Tennis David Thorp Do please give this some thought and if you would like to take part please contact those named above direct their details are on the website or in the Livery List.
