6 59th SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA and the 10th SOUTH COAST JUNIOR REGATTA Sunday 12th/13th September 2015 held at Wimbleball Lake by Steve Bull It was the West of England Amateur Rowing Associations turn to host 2015 South Coast Championship Regatta the 59th which included the 10th Junior Regatta. The venue chosen was Wimbleball Lake, on the edge of Exmoor in Somerset, the venue used in 2010 and few would disagree that it provides an excellent course, in stunning surroundings - probably 2nd only to the purpose built course at Dorney Lake. The downside is its remoteness and lack of facilities, the shortage of accommodation close by and access. But in spite of these problems the organisers in the main of Stephen and Andrea Worley with some support from the local club and some from WEARA put on, what was, in the main, a good and enjoyable two day event with produced some excellent racing. Communication was almost entirely via electronic means which seemed to work ok and will be the favoured format going forward - although some of the information arrived a little late in the day - and a full draw, not just a running order and own club entries - a few days before the regatta would have been helpful. The reception on the Friday evening in the Regatta Marquee was well attended and was a very pleasant and friendly event. The prize giving on Saturday again held in the Regatta Marquee was reasonably well organised and well attended as always and just about big enough to cope with the prizes presented by BR Deputy Chairman Gary Harris. As in 2010 the organisers chose to put on any event where they received a reasonable entry so in addition to the Championship events and the traditional fours open events there was also racing for small boats and J17 and J18 crews and scullers on the Saturday over the 2000m course with Sunday s racing over 1000m reserved for Juniors up to and including J16 in a range of boat types. This approach did not receive universal approval with CARA in particular raising objections in spite of entries being received from their clubs. It has to be said that some H&D ARA Clubs, Officials and individuals shared the CARA view but as the planned events were approved by Council in January and will have provided useful additional revenue to the organisers H&D Club s embraced the plan dominated the entries and won the majority of the races in Saturday s Regatta. The H&D and CARA provided 14 race officials over the two days CARA just 4

7 6 and there were some communication issues and role confusion especially at the start. There were some safety concerns a lack of safety cover in the junior events and safety boats with a single occupant at times and WEARA failed to provide a boat inspector the inspections on both days being undertaken by the H&D and CARA representatives only. Over the two days there were 286 entries with 172 of these on the Saturday and 114 in the junior events of the Sunday. WEARA failed to provide three championships crews only entering one crew in the Ladies Senior, Men s Junior Senior and Masters Championship events which was a very disappointing in a WEARA hosted championships - but it did allow the H&D ARA to invoke Rule 25B and add an extra crew to the Masters Championship event. So the H&D ARA had the most Championship crews at 13 CARA their full quota of 12 and WEARA 9. In the traditional open fours event the H&DARA had 38 entries against 21 from CARA and just 13 from WEARA Clubs, in the small boats events there were 36 entries from H&D Clubs, 6 from CARA and 14 from WEARA with 7 H&D ARA entries in the J17/J18 events alongside 1 from CARA and 2 from WEARA so the H&D had 54% of the entries in this regatta. The Junior Regatta on the Sunday had 114 entries with a much stronger presence from the WEARA Clubs with 48 entries to the H&D ARA s 59 and CARA s 7. So the H&D ARA had the majority of entries in this regatta as well with 51% - and it would be true to say that the South Coast Championships would not be viable without the presence, commitment and enthusiasm of the H&D Clubs. And so to the racing and as usual, with my thanks to John Bailey I quote his Press report on the regatta to describe the how the Championship events went: Rowed on the wide reaches of Wimbleball Lake in The Exmoor National Park crews were subjected to every aspects of Autumn weather with early morning torrential rain and a cross wind that made life difficult for both rowers and starting official alike, changing to a pleasantly warm afternoon. As throughout the Hants and Dorset season Itchen Imperial s crews dominated the Championship Events with wins in both the Ladies Senior and Ladies Junior Championships and the Men s Masters+40 Championship, but once again Bexhill won the coveted Bideford Bowl in a race that saw both Bexhill and Itchen Imperial dominate. By the half way mark Bexhill were 1/2 length up having moved across the course with Itchen, now on the inside of the final bend, unable to gain the same advantage. Building for their finish Bexhill eased ahead to gain clear water over Itchen as they entered the final 100 meters. Itchen, now rowing in the unsettled wash of the Bexhill blades started to close on the Bexhill crew but had left it too late and, despite launching an official protest regarding the Bexhill course Bexhill were declared the winners, retaining the Bideford Bowl for another year. The Associations 4th Championship win came in the Men s Junior Coxed Fours 5

8 which Westover won ahead of who were also 3rd in the Masters Championship event with Westover also gaining two 2nd places in the Men s Junior Senior Coxed Fours and the Ladies Junior Coxed Fours Championship events to complete an impressive set of result for the crews we had been selected to represent the Association. Crews from Hants & Dorset ARA Clubs won 7 of the 9 traditional open regatta events with Newport taking the Men s Junior Senior Fours, Christchurch the Men s Junior Fours and Ryde the Men s Novice Fours. In the Ladies events won the seniors and Southampton the juniors with Coalporters taking the Masters Event and the Ladies Masters. In the small boat and J17/J18 events there were further victories for H&D Clubs with Newport winning the Men s Senior Sculls, the Men s Junior Sculls and Ryde the Men s Novice Sculls. In the Pairs events Christchurch won the Men s Senior and Ryde the Men s junior events and Christchurch won the Men s J18 Coxed Fours and the Men s J17 Single Sculls a total of 7 wins for H&D Clubs compared with 3 each for CARA and WEARA Clubs. However the junior events on Sunday were dominated by WEARA Clubs some of whom only entered the Junior Regatta - who won 15 of the events - with the Hants & Dorset winning 2 the Men s J16 Sculls for Itchen and the Men s J14 sculls for Christchurch with CARA taking just 1 win. It is difficult to understand why the WEARA Clubs enter and contest the junior events so strongly but fail to do so in the open events. There were clearly WEARA Crews especially in the older groups who could have competed successfully on the Saturday as well. So the Hants & Dorset ARA dominated the entries and with the exception of the Junior Regatta the results and we are once again the South Coasts top Rowing Association - To quote John Bailey once again Whilst the big one got away the Hants & Dorset Association were once gain proud winners of the Eileen & Eric Memorial Challenge Cup for overall Championship winners and dominated the Sesquicentennial Regatta Trophy. But as the event approaches its 60th year there are major concerns the lack of support from and enthusiasm for the Championships from WEARA you have to fear how big their presence will be at the very coastal venue of Herne Bay next year and even at Dorney in There is little doubt that without the commitment, support, enthusiasm and determination to see the event succeed of the H&D Clubs and Officials this Championship would probably cease to exist and remains under threat which needs addressing by Council and the three Associations. 6

19 HANTS & DORSET AMATEUR ROWING ASSOCIATION ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE OFFICERS The Hants & Dorset ARA was founded in 1903 and originally consisted of seven Clubs Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Southsea, Southampton, Shanklin and Bournemouth YMCA. The Association was formed with an agreed split from CARA, who had since 1893 administered all rowing along the South Coast from Herne Bay to Weymouth but increased travelling expenses made the are to large for Clubs to support all Regattas and there was a consequent drop in entries. The Racing Officials at each Regatta will nominate the three coxswains they feel have performed the best on the day and will note their names and Clubs on the Regatta De-brief form which will be sent to the Association Secretary who will analysis the nominations at the end of the season the Coxswain of the Year Award being presented to the coxswain who received most points during the season with points awarded as follows 1st nominated 3 points and Regatta Cox of the day; 2nd nominated 2 points; 3rd nominated 1 point. Water Safety Sub Committee Term of reference: To try to ensure, as far as practical, that all Hants & Dorset ARA affiliated Clubs and Regatta s comply with the Amateur Rowing Association Water Safety code of Practice and guidance notes and any additional terms of practice introduced by the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association. 24 HANTS & DORSET AMATEUR ROWING ASSOCIATION The Association Secretaries Review on 2015 Unlike the 2014 season for 2015 there was very little disruption, due to the weather, to the preseason head races a pattern that continued throughout the season where apart from Lymington/Milford-on-sea Regatta where the first attempt was lost to the weather all the Championship Regatta s were staged as planned - although the odd event was lost due to the prevailing conditions or time and tide constraints and with Lymington also staged on its revised date the full thirteen event regatta program was completed. Entries across the thirteen championship regattas, including non-championship events, were 1691 a fall of 50 on 2014 which had shown a significant rise of 199 on the 2013 season. Poole had a huge entry in 2014 which dropped back to more normal levels and accounted for most of the drop. Entries at eleven regattas exceed more than last year with Southsea Regatta, an event covering two Associations had, as ever, the largest entry at of these coming from Hants & Dorset ARA Clubs with the ever popular Association run Swanage Regatta the largest H&DARA only regatta with an entry of 165. Itchen were comfortable winners of the Men s Senior Fours Championship with 9 wins and points, the limited opposition coming from Coalporters and with 2 points and 1 point respectively. Itchen and Coalporters duly went on to represent the Association at the South Coast Championships where Itchen will be disappointed with their 2nd place behind Bexhill. In contrast the Junior Senior Fours produced the anticipated close contest with Westover securing the Championship with 6 points over Poole with 5 with Newport and Coalporters gaining one a piece. Westover and Poole represented the Association at the South Coast Championships Westover taking 2nd place behind Deal. In the men s coastal Junior Fours event s eight wins and points gave them the Association Championship the only competition coming Westover who won the remaining five regatta s although they were deducted one point for failing to register an oarsman. These two clubs represented the Association at the South Coast Championships where a change if form saw Westover emerge as Champions with as runners-up. Nine different Clubs had wins in the Men s Novice Fours Championship with Christchurch emerging as Champions with their three wins with Poole s two wins making them runners-up with single wins for Coalporters, Southampton, Shanklin, Itchen, Westover, and Southsea. Itchen Imperial dominated the Ladies Senior Fours winning eleven of the thirteen regattas with Coalporters and winning the other two. Itchen and Coalporters represented the Association at the South Coast Championships where Itchen continued their domination to take the title. It was Itchen Imperial again who won the Ladies Coastal Junior Championship with eight wins chased by Westover who won three and Coalporters and Poole who won one apiece. Itchen went on to win the South Coast Championship event with Westover finishing as runners-up. The Ladies Novice Fours Championship was a much closer contested competition with nine clubs winning races but with Poole, Shanklin, Southampton and Lymington each winning twice these Clubs share the Association Championship with Itchen and Westover recording single wins. The Masters Fours was another event dominated by Itchen as they took the Championship with nine wins with Poole winning three times and once. All three crews represented the Association at the South Coast Championships as WEARA failed to provide a crew with Itchen taking the title and finishing in 3rd place. The Ladies Championship Masters event introduced for the first time this season was well supported and won by Christchurch with seven wins in a close contest with who won five events Southampton claiming a single win. 22

25 In the Coxed pair s events Itchen retained the Senior Men s title with eight wins from with two and one apiece for Lymington and Shanklin. The Men s Coastal Junior Pairs was dominated by Westover with two different crews who won ten points between them with single wins recorded by Southsea and. Itchen also retained and completely dominated the Ladies Senior Pairs event taking all twelve points awarded and in the newly introduced Ladies Coastal Junior Pairs Championship there was another dominating performance from Westover with eleven points won with Lymington picking up a single win. The Men s Senior Sculls was quite closely contested with Itchen s Tom Foad s five wins giving him the Championship over Club rival Mark Wardell and s Richard Hume who both won twice. Alex Robertson of Shanklin, Olly Hayward from Newport and Malc Hume from all picked up single points. The Men s Coastal Junior Sculls was the most closely contested Championships of the season and required a row-off between Newport s Joe Fuccio and Shanklin s Joe Evans-Murry as they finished the season with four points apiece the Shanklin sculler winning the row-off. Single wins were also recorded by Williams of Coalporters, Verdon of Lymington and Radciffe of. Shanklin also claimed the Men s Novice Sculling Championship with four wins from their two scullers Evans-Murry and Misslebach with Runners-up thanks to Adam Radcliffs two wins. Single wins were recorded by Ryde, Southampton, Coalporters and Itchen. In the ladies Sculling events Jess Bull of Itchen won the Championship with 5 points from club colleague K. McGregor-Ritchie with a single win. Katie Crane of Poole comfortably won the Junior Ladies Championship with seven wins from Townly of Itchen, Green from and Webb from Newport who recorded single wins. Finally with four wins two each from Cook and Gooch won the Ladies Novice Sculls Championship with Itchen runners-up thanks to two wins from Daniels and single wins were recorded by Newport, Poole and Christchurch. The R. S. O Hank Carr Memorial Trophy for the Club winning the most Hants & Dorset ARA Championship points was once again awarded to Itchen Imperial Rowing Club who had another outstanding season and they also secured the Archie Fraser Memorial Trophy for the best H&D Club in the Championship and Open events at the South Coast Championship Regatta and as the major contributor will also hold the Eric and Eileen Crowe Memorial Challenge Cup on behalf of the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association who won this trophy once again. The prestigious Coxswain of the year Trophy went to Penny Budd of Coalporters a long overdue acknowledgment of her abilities with previous winner Sophie Maxwell of runner-up. Two safety awards were made to Itchen and Shanklin - for completing the season with no faults found in boat inspections. Finally The Evening Echo Trophy, presented in memory of Arthur Chatfield, to an individual who has made a significant contribution to Hants & Dorset and Coastal Rowing was awarded to Gary Joyce, of Itchen Imperial Rowing Club for his outstanding work for the Association especially with regards to Safety, the Rules review and the organisation of H&D ARA hosted South Coast Championship Regattas. Registration have fallen by around 6% on with Christchurch still the largest Club and Coalporters 2nd. The percentage of those registered that were Novices at the start of the season has dropped to less than 50% which is where the significant increase had taken place over the last two years. The fall in registration probably reflects the national trend in rowing and other Olympic sports where the 2012 Olympic legacy in terms of participation appears to have peaked and dropped back. The Association can feel relatively comfortable about its situation while the Bideford Bowl may have eluded us we clearly remain the dominant South Coast Rowing Association with regards to participation and performance and our domestic events were successfully completed and well supported with some excellent racing and no major issues to contend with. However plenty of challenges remain not least our relationship with British Rowing and concerns regarding the relatively poor standard and entries in the highest statuses.
