3 6th October Sat 6th October 10 am - 12 noon Beacon Leisure Centre, Lammerlaws Road, Burntisland, KY3 9BS. Free Burntisland Big Beach Clean! The Big Beach Clean is an annual event and a part of FCCT s Access All Areas Festival. Scotland has more coastline than anywhere else in the UK and many communities rely on the cleanliness of their beach for their economy. Beach litter and the problems it causes to both humans and wildlife is a huge issue that we need everyone s help with. We hope that communities, regular volunteers, schools, community groups, councillors will join us at Burntisland Big Beach Clean. This is a FREE event but booking is necessary to ensure we can accommodate everyone who wishes to attend. Visit our events page to register. 2

4 6th/21st October Sat 6th October Sun 21st October Sat 6th 2 pm Sun 21st 11 am RACE HQ - Pitcairn Centre, Moidart Drive, Glenrothes, Fife, KY7 6ET. Entry Fees 12 affiliated 14 non-affiliated 3 Nutcracker Trail Races PB Timing in partnership with Fife Coast & Countryside Trust will be hosting two trail races from the Pitcairn Centre, Glenrothes. Runners will be rewarded with lovely countryside views of the Lomond Hills and surrounding countryside. Nutcracker Trail Race #1 will be held on Saturday 6th October starting at 2:00pm. Race entry will be limited to 75 runners. Nutcracker Trail Race #2 will be held on Sunday 21st October starting at 11:00am. Race entry will be limited to 75 runners. RACE ROUTES - The challenging race routes will be held on woodland paths and trails in and around Coul Den Nature Reserve and the Lomond Hills area. The running surfaces will be a mix of gravel & grassy paths. The race distances will be approx. 5-6 miles. For further information and to register visit

Free Get Out and Get Involved Join Ranger Dallas at one of his volunteer events, carry out a range of practical conservation tasks, including Woodland Work, Coppice Skills, Tree Planting, all important elements of managing the woodlands at Lochore Meadows. Please wear outdoor waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch. Full training and equipment will be provided. Participants should be physically fit. 6 5Access All Areas Sun 7th October 2 pm pm Meet at Green Outdoor Education Building, Lochore Meadows Country Park, Crosshill, Lochgelly, KY5 8BA. 6 7th October 6th October Fungal Foray - Guided Walk An opportunity to explore the woods of Lochore in the company of Woodland Managers, Rural Skills Exponents and Mycologists. Find out about the incredible world of fungi and learn how to tell brackets from boleted and roll-rim. The event will involve walking over rough terrain. Please dress appropriately for the conditions on the day - walking boots or good walking shoes, waterproof jacket, water and any medication you may require. Minimum age 8 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Well behaved dogs are welcome. To book a place visit our events page

7 9th October Tues 9th October 10 am 12:30 pm Riverside Park, Main Car Park, Leslie Road (A911), Glenrothes, KY6 3EP. Free Improving a Wetland Oasis for Wildlife Take part in a pond restoration event to help us remove encroaching scrub and create hibernacula for amphibians. 8 7Access All Areas Wed 10th October 2 pm - 4 pm Craig Hall Den. Meet at the Car Park beside the Fife Folk Museum (KY15 5NQ). Free Autumn Walk - Craig Hall Den Join our new seasonal rangers on an autumn walk through Craig Hall Den (Ceres), a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Enjoy the colours of autumn, learn about the site s history, fauna and flora and look out for the first of the autumn fungi. Wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear as the footpaths can be difficult. To book a FREE place visit our events page

9 Thurs 11th October Thurs 18th October 11 am - 1 pm Meet at Hot Pot Wynd, Harbourmaster s House, Dysart, Fife, KY1 2TQ. Adults 10 Under 16 5 Over 60 6 Family Ticket 20 (2 Adults/up to 4 Children) Dysart Walking Tour A walking tour of Dysart that offers flavour of the rich history and heritage of the area. Learn about salt production, coal mining industries key to the village s development. Enjoy the architecture of the village, crow step gables, the Tolbooth and the Cross. Learn about the role Dysart born John Pitcairn played in the American War of Independence. The tour will be led by Ken Foster of Thane of Fife Wildlife and Heritage Tours. 10 13th October Sat 13th October 10 am - 12 noon Elie Holiday Park, Shell Bay, Elie, Fife, KY9 1HB. Free Seashell Safari and Minibeast Hunt Come and explore the fascinating woodland and seashore habitats of Shell Bay. Hunt for minibeasts around the grassland and forest edge before heading to the coast for a seashore safari! Weather permitting, Duncan Davidson from Butterfly Conservation Scotland will provide an insight into the wonderful world of moths as we help him to record and release insects caught overnight in a special moth trap. 11 13th and 14th October Sat 13th - Sun 14th Oct 10 am - 4 pm Meet at Green Outdoor Education Building. Lochore Meadows Country Park, Crosshill, Lochgelly, KY5 8BA. There is more than one way to shave a horse! A two day workshop, where participants create a shave horse. The course includes selection of appropriate timber, tool selection and care and pole lathe work. Please wear outdoor waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch. 12 13th October Sat 13th October The Mad Hatters - Adventures into Wonderland - Marathon and Ultra Marathon Ultra 7 am - 5 pm Marathon 10 am - 5 pm. Ultra Marathon Ascent: Almost 2,000m Distance: 65k (40 miles) Entry limit: 100 Marathon Start Ascent: Almost 1,200m Distance: 46k (28 miles) Entry limit: 100 Lochore Meadows Country Park, Crosshill, Lochgelly, KY5 8BA. Two new trail races covering some of the best hills and scenery in West Fife and the Lomond Hills Regional Park. Both routes are held predominantly on the Fife Core Path Network - very little tarmac. Both routes are fully marked, no navigation experience is necessary. For more information and to book visit: 11

West Sands Events Programme We have just recruited a new team of Countryside Rangers to deliver our services at West Sands and the Eden Estuary. Over the coming months we will offer a range of activities led by our new Rangers Gavin and Emily. Make sure to keep an eye on our notice boards and social media for details of guided walks, conservation activities, children s activities and so much more. 14 14th October Sun 14th October 2 pm - 4 pm Senior Citizens Centre, 79 Main Road, East Wemyss, Fife, KY1 4RQ. Free/donations Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society 13 The Myths and Legends of Wemyss Caves The Wemyss Caves are situated along the coast of the Firth of Forth just to the east of the village of East Wemyss. There are many stories and local traditions connected with the caves but they are particularly famous for the ancient Pictish carvings which adorn their walls. Enjoy a tour of the caves with the SWACS tour guides. See these enigmatic carvings for yourself and relive the history and myths associated with this unique site. The route crosses some rough terrain, so please wear walking boots or sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. Also, please note that there are some 80+ steps to climb. 15 19th October Fri 19th October pm pm The Ness, Car Park, Torry Bay, Torryburn Village (NT 022) Free Peerie Whaups and Watery Pleeps Torry Bay Local Nature Reserve is home to internationally important numbers of wildfowl and waders including Shelduck, Knot, Redshank and Great Crested Grebe. Join Ranger Lyn and discover a bit more about this haven for birds. The walk will take you along the Fife Coastal Path towards Crombie Point, taking in the historic Crombie Kirk graveyard on the way. The walk is suitable for all ages, the route is pram and wheelchair friendly, young people under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Distance 2.25 miles. To book a place visit our events page 14

16 20th/21st October Sat 20th - Sun 21st October 9 am - 4 pm Craig Hall Den. Meet at the Car Park beside the Fife Folk Museum (KY15 5NQ) Craft and Heritage - Learn to build with dry stone This is a two day training course, led by qualified instructors from the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA). A partly rebuilt dry stone boundary wall separates two properties in scenic central Fife countryside. The rebuilt section lets you see how a dry wall is constructed. You ll learn how to select stone, lift it safely and place it securely in the wall under the guidance of a DSWA-qualified instructor, working safely as a team - the craft skills. You will see the wall grow steadily, and maybe even put in a few special features. Wear comfortable old clothes, steel toe capped boots, gloves, waterproofs and bring a packed lunch. Minimum Age -16. 17 20th October Sat 20th October 10 am - 4 pm Meet at Outdoor Education Building Lochore Meadows Country Park, Crosshill, Lochgelly, KY5 8BA. Free Get Out and Get Involved Join Ranger Dallas and a team from FARG (Fife Amphibian and Reptile Group) carry out a range of conservation tasks and pond work to ensure the ponds at Lochore Meadows are flourishing. Please wear outdoor waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch. Full training and equipment will be provided. Participants should be physically fit. 18 20th October Sat 20th October 11 am to 1 pm Anstruther Pleasure Cruises Ticket Office, Anstruther Harbour, KY10 3AB. 27 Seal Spectacular! Accompany members of the Fife Seal Group on a boat trip around the Isle of May. Help record and monitor the population and behaviours of grey seals as they gather at their traditional breeding site. We will look out for the first of the season s white coated pups and learn some interesting facts about these iconic sea mammals. A fascinating and unique experience for wildlife lovers! Wear warm clothing, waterproofs and life jackets will be provided. Suitable for ages 12 and above, young people under 16 must be accompanied by and adult. To book a place visit our events page 17

19 20th 21st October Sat 20th and 21st October 10 am - 3 pm Meet at Falkland Library, Back Wynd, Falkland, Fife, KY15 7BX. 75 NNAS Bronze Navigation Award This is a twelve hour course held over two six hour days, which includes the assessment in the second half of day two. On successful completion of the award you will be able to plan and follow routes in the countryside using paths and tracks. You will learn, among other disciplines, how to orientate a map using a compass, relate features from the map to the ground and vice versa, use grid references and how to plan and implement strategies. These are predominantly outdoor, practical days, there is no planned classroom work involved. Please dress and equip yourself for a day on the hills and bring any food and drink you may need. Please bring a suitable compass of a type similar to a Silva type 4 marked with degrees. Maps provided. To book visit 18

Free but there is a charge for apple pressing ( 1 per trug) Autumn Apple Event Join Ranger Dallas for a day in celebration of the apple. Learn pruning techniques, plant trees, pick up some amazing apple recipes and bring along your apples to be turned into juice ( 1 per trug). To book a place visit our events page 19

21 October Programme Bums off Seats Bums off Seats is a Fife Walking Initiative that provides free local health walking opportunities in Fife. Walks are led by a trained team of Volunteer Walk Leaders - all walks are between 1 mile and 3.5 miles. This is a Fife Council funded project with support from Active Fife and Paths for All.
