I have been there from pouring rain to glorious sunshine and on every occasion someone has flown in to make it all worthwhile. The one comment we have been getting is the roughness of the strip but as we close down for the winter this should be addressed as our farmer gets in there with the roller and grass seed. So next year will show a big improvement in the surface for pilots to land on. Obviously this is just a start and over the winter the committee will be having a look at where we go from here aiming at a full planning approval for an airfield with the entire infrastructure that we would need. As you will be aware these need very delicate discussions with all parties and not just the local authority as our neighbours will surely have something to say. I met one of these the other day as he was walking his dog along the side of the strip and I was pleasantly surprised to find that he was in full agreement with the idea. What we need now are more of these people to show their approval. The next item on the agenda in the life of the Lancashire Aero Club is the usual bun fight otherwise know as the Annual General Meeting and this is to be held on the 16 th September at the Boysnope Golf Club. There has been some criticism of this venue and some calls to go to the clubhouse at Barton for our meetings, but can you seriously think that we can do that when we were looked on as pariahs by the new management of the airfield. So until we get our own clubhouse at our own airfield I think we should stick with what we know and make the best of it. I do know that for the AGM we have booked exclusive use of the room so that will make it better for all concerned. Since the rules of the club make it that three members of the committee stand down each year, though they are eligible for re-election, it means that other members of the Club can put themselves forward for the committee. If there are more than three nominations then there will be an election under the rules of the Club so now is the time to decide if you feel strongly enough about anything to do with the Club.

2 At the time of the EGM, when the new rules were accepted, it became obvious that there were a couple of issues that were not quite right, so again now is the time to make your resolutions for the AGM to consider. Nominations for the Committee shall be received by the Secretary of the Club before the 31 st August 2009, and the nominee shall have been an individual member of the Club for not less than two years continuously. Each nomination shall be accompanied with intimation in writing that the nominee is willing to serve, and giving the names and membership numbers of the proposer and seconder, who must be individual members of the Club. A Notice of Motion concerning amendments to the Rules, for the Annual General Meeting must be received, in writing, by the Secretary of the Club, duly signed by the Proposer and Seconder, giving the names and membership numbers, before the 31 st August 2009, A Notice of Motion for any other matter must be received, by the Secretary of the Club by the 9 th September 2009, giving the names and membership numbers of the proposer and seconder of the motion. However, I find that it is the LAA and BMAA pilots who are the most enthusiastic and social flyers in the community. So I don t apologise for the articles I produce for you, but I do hope you enjoy them, so here s another of them. The time-tested design of a Pietenpol Air Camper If you've been around aviation for any length of time, you have may have heard of the Pietenpol Air Camper. The story began in the mid-1920's in Minnesota, USA. Bernard Pietenpol was interested in airplanes, as were many young people after WW1. He began tinkering with airplanes and by 1929 he had a viable airframe and an airfoil drawn in chalk on a workshop floor (so the legend says!). Ford Model A cars were selling and Pietenpol was confident that the Ford engine would be OK in his 'plane. With a few modifications to the engine and mounting a propeller, the 'plane flew well and so he built a second one. A couple of years later, Modern Mechanics Illustrated (the forerunner of Popular Mechanics) published an editorial denouncing the viability of car engines in 'planes as

3 being too heavy and underpowered. Pietenpol and a colleague flew his two 'planes to show them to the editor of the magazine, who was so thrilled that he asked if he could publish the plans. No plans existed at the time, so Pietenpol got his young neighbour, Orrin Hoopman, to draw some. These plans were subsequently published and the rest is history! Pietenpols have been built all over the world for more than 75 years. Some are still being built with Ford Model A or B engines. The Corvair and Continental A-65 engines are other popular engines. The pictures below show a Pietenpol built by an EAA member in the USA started in 1997 and finally inspected and signed off in May The engine used was an A " wire spoke wheels were fitted; hand-woven wicker seat backs, burled black walnut veneer instrument panels, a homemade compass and cowl latches all added to the antique effect. The aircraft looks right at home on its grass airfield in Stanton, Minnesota, and always draws a crowd whenever it is taken out of its hangar! ' EAAers in action'.
