1 Unemployment by Constituency July 1995 Research Paper 95/93 16 August 1995 Official unemployment rates for parliamentary constituencies only exist for those few constituencies which are self-contained labour markets. This paper is the latest of a monthly series which presents up-to-date unemployment rates not available elsewhere, using official figures for the number of unemployed claimants and estimates of the 1988 economically active population in each GB constituency. This edition also includes residence-based unemployment rates for constituencies in Northern Ireland. At present these are on a slightly different basis from those for constituencies in Great Britain but it is hoped to introduce a methodology common to all UK constituencies later this year. 4 A Introduction Official unemployment rates for parliamentary constituencies only exist for those few constituencies which are self-contained labour markets. This paper presents up-to-date unemployment rates not available elsewhere. These use official figures for the number of unemployed claimants and, in the case of GB constituencies, estimates of the 1988 economically active population (provided by CACI (Information Services) Ltd). For Northern Ireland constituencies, figures were derived from the 1991 Census of Population for the number of people who are economically active in each constituency. At present, therefore, the unemployment rates for the seventeen constituencies in Northern Ireland are not comparable with those for constituencies in Great Britain. It is hoped to be able to introduce a set of denominators that will be comparable for all UK constituencies later this year. These residence-based rates should be regarded more as a social measure of relative deprivation than as an economic measure of the mismatch between the supply of and demand for labour. For a full exposition of the methodology used to calculate these rates, see Background Paper No This paper also shows the change in the number of unemployed claimants in each constituency 1 year, 3 years and 5 years ago. Seasonally adjusted figures for the number of unemployed claimants are not available below regional level so meaningful comparisons can only be made between the same months in successive years. Even these are affected by changes in the method used to compile unemployment statistics for which no adjustments have been made. Notes: 1. The political parties shown against each constituency are as they stand currently. The following abbreviations for parties have been used: CON Conservative UUP Ulster Unionist Party LAB Labour DUP Democratic Unionist Party LD Liberal Democrat SDLP Social Democratic and PC Plaid Cymru Labour Party SNP Scottish National Party UPUP Ulster Popular Unionist Party SPKR Speaker UKU United Kingdom Unionist 2. One Conservative member has resigned the party whip. Holland with Boston constituency is therefore shown as CON* in the tables. 1
