1 HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2017 A unique opportunity to visit, free of charge, some of Exeter s most interesting and unusual historical sites and buildings. ABOUT HERITAGE OPEN DAYS Heritage Open Days celebrates England s architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that usually charge for admission or are not normally open to the public. This year the event celebrates its 23rd year. It is a once a year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring local history and culture to life. The event is managed nationally by the National Trust with financial support from the People Postcode Lottery and Historic England. It is England s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event. Last year the event attracted over 3 million visitors. Listed throughout this brochure are all the properties and events in Exeter s Heritage Open Days Use the number to locate an event on the map. Exeter s Woollen Cloth Industry Thursday 7 September 10am A Red Coat Guided tour that explores Exeter s Woollen Cloth Trade. Discover why Exeter became one of the country s wealthiest cities. See sites that still survive of this once important industry. Finishes at Tuckers Hall. Meet outside Cathedral West Front Bookings available from 1 September (10am 4pm, Mon Fri) 2. The Materials Reclamation Facility Real Recycling Thursday 7 September 10am and 1pm Tour Exeter City Council s Materials Reclamation Facility. This site is the sorting plant for recycling collected from domestic properties in Exeter. Come and see first-hand how the recycling collected from Exeter residents is sorted and learn what happens to it next. Please wear sturdy footwear, no under 16 s allowed on site. 2 3. Topsham: A Guided Tour Thursday 7 September 2pm A 90 minute guided tour with the Topsham Guides. Discover the fascinating history of Topsham. The Town was originally the Roman port for Exeter. Southernhay United Reformed Church Thursday 7 September 11am 1pm People have been worshipping at this church since 1868, although the buildings (except the tower and spire) were rebuilt after their destruction during the Exeter blitz in See stained glass and carved oak. 5. Fursdon House, Gardens and Tea Room Cadbury (EX5 5JS) Thursday 7 September, Gardens and Tea Room 2pm 5pm Tours 2.30pm and 3.30pm Visitors can take a guided tour of Historic Fursdon House, where the same family has lived for over 750 years. Discover the evolution and fluctuating fortunes of the family and show rooms dating from different periods in history, all in use today. There are family anecdotes and an insight into the life and times of the squires of the manor of Fursdon including tales of a ghost and a dragon. The intimate family museum reflects this long history and some 18th and 19th century family costumes are displayed. Visitors can also walk round the attractive gardens with spectacular views out across the Devon countryside and stroll down to the pond and the meadow garden. St. Sidwell s A Guided Tour Thursday 7 September and Friday 8 September 11am A guided walking tour of the Eastern quarter of the city centre, starting and finishing at St Sidwell s. Discover the fascinating history of this often forgotten part of the city. 3 7. Exeter City Football Club St James Park Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September 11am Tours of St James Park, home of Exeter City Football Club. Crowds have been watching football here for over 100 years. Tour the grounds, changing rooms and behind the scenes in the sponsors and executive suites. This will be the last chance to see the Old Grandstand before it is demolished and replaced in the autumn. Meet at main club reception, booking required, tour lasts approximately 90 minutes. Custom House Exeter s Historic Quayside Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September 11am and 2pm Join Mike Walker from the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust and discover the history of the Custom House which was constructed in Exeter s Custom House is one of England s oldest purpose built custom houses. Used by Customs and Excise until 1989, the building has an impressive sweeping staircase and ornamental plaster ceilings. A one hour guided tour. 9. Pynes Hill Treatment Works Pynes Thursday 7 September 1pm and Friday 8 September 10am Pynes was built in 1833 in response to Exeter s devastating cholera outbreak which claimed the lives of 440 people. The tragedy led to dramatic changes in water treatment processes and the city s water treatment processes being moved from Exe St near the city centre to the less polluted Pynes Leat. Visitors will be greeted by South West Water s water quality experts for a presentation on the history of the water supply and a guided tour of the fully operational site with staff wearing period costumes to add extra atmosphere to the proceedings. St Sidwell s Community Centre Open Day Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September 10am 4pm St Sidwell s Community Centre is part of a little known ancient site, central to the legend of Exeter s St. Sidwella. Find out more about the legend and the fascinating history of the site through the recently installed displays. Also take an audio tour of our historic graveyard: learn more about some of the people buried here over the past 1000 years. Refreshments available all day in the Community Café. Sidwella in Glass St. Sidwell s Community Centre Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September 10am 4pm Come and hear the legend of Sidwella, the patron saint of Exeter, and view our unique collection of 19th and 20th century stained glass images. For further information call The Veitch Period Lamp-Post Trail and Mulberry Garden Tour Thursday 7 and Saturday 9 September 11am meet at Bury Meadow Park Free guided tours of this new and unique attraction includes a series of Exeter s old cast-iron lamp posts, each hand-painted with a different plant brought back to the UK by the city s famous Veitch family plant-hunters. This fascinating blend of Exeter s horticultural heritage and industrial history was created to preserve period street furniture whilst celebrating its famous gardening family. The trail lasts approx. 60 minutes and ends with refreshments after a short tour of The Mulberry Garden, St David s Hill. Haldon Belvedere Haldon (EX6 7QY) Thursday 7 September and Sunday 10 September 11am 4pm Tours of Haldon Belvedere or Lawrence Castle as it was originally known. It sits on the Pen Hill knoll, above Exeter, some 244 metres above sea level. This, with the 99 steps which travel to the roof, provide panoramic views on all directions across to the Jurassic coast of Dorset and Portland Bill, towards Exmoor and the Quantock Hills to the north, Dartmoor to the west and the rolling hills of the South Hams to the south. For further information call Exeter Cathedral Library Exhibition: Hospital Number Six Thursday 7 Saturday 9 September 10.30am 3.30pm In 1917 the then Bishop of Exeter offered part of the Bishop s Palace, possibly including rooms now occupied by the Library and Archives, to the Red Cross for use as a hospital for sick and wounded soldiers. As part of the 2017 Heritage Lottery Fund project to commemorate the role of Exeter s First World War Hospitals the Library and Archives are hosting an exhibition and information about the role of the Palace as Hospital No 6, a specialist unit offering electro-therapeutic and massage treatment with the aim of helping soldiers recover the use of their limbs.

Devon and Exeter Institution Cathedral Close Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September 1pm 4pm Saturday 9 September 10am 4pm The Devon and Exeter Institution is open to the public for tours of our Georgian library, where visitors will experience highlights of the collection in two magical galleried reading rooms with cupolas. There is also an opportunity to visit the Courtenhay Room with its 17th Century plaster ceiling. 16. Parish of Central Exeter Churches Thursday 7 Sunday 10 September 9.30am 5pm Four churches of medieval origin St Stephen s and St Petrock s in High Street, St Olave s on Fore Street and St Pancras in the Guildhall Shopping Centre will open their doors during Heritage Open Days. 17. Exeter s Underground Passages Paris Street Thursday 7 Saturday 9 September 10am, 11am, 12noon, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm Sunday 10 September 11am, 12noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm Guided tours of medieval vaulted passages that stretch out beneath the streets of Exeter. Built in the 14th century to bring a fresh water supply into the city. Also visit the visitor centre packed full of interactive exhibits. Tours are not suitable for sufferers of claustrophobia or the under-5s. Meet at the entrance on Paris Street 10 minutes before the start of your tour. Booking essential, call Tuckers Hall Fore Street Thursday 7 Sunday 10 September 10.30am 1.30pm Talks at am, 12noon and 1pm A 15th century chapel converted to a meeting hall in the 16th century. It is the only surviving trades guild in Exeter, home of Exeter s guild of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen. 6 The Mint Off Fore Street Thursday 7 Sunday 10 September 11am 4pm 21 The Mint includes many historic features, including Norman stonework, a superb 15th century oak arch-braced roof, and ornate Tudor panelling. The cloister garden is a delight; an opportunity to escape from the bustling city centre to the tranquillity of this ancient monastic building. Stewards will be on hand to welcome visitors and to tell the story of the Priory from its foundation in the 11th century, on the orders of William the Conqueror, up to the present day. All children must be accompanied by an adult. For Information call, Exeter Guildhall High Street Thursday 7 Sunday 10 September 10.30am 4pm The Guildhall has served as the centrepiece of Exeter s civic life for more than 800 years. It remains a busy working building, still in use for civic functions and city council meetings. Civic regalia and city silver on display. For information call St Nicholas Priory The Mint, Fore Street Thursday 7 Sunday 10 September 11am 4pm This year we have the rare opportunity of opening both the surviving ranges of St. Nicholas Priory to the public. In addition to our normal guided tours of the North/Refectory Wing (21 The Mint), we will be including the West/Guest Wing of this important Medieval Priory which has been closed for several years. There is much to see in the West Wing, including a large Tudor Kitchen, Parlour, stone-pillared Cellar and a Chamber above the Parlour. Devon Archaeological Society will be in the Cellar to talk to visitors. A selection of reproduction costumes will be available to try on. 22. Exeter Livestock Centre Friday 8 September 9.30am and 11.30am See Devon s liveliest livestock market (cattle and sheep). A 1-hour tour of the market whilst the market and auction is taking place. Event not suitable for children under the age of 8. Please wear suitable footwear (wellingtons or washable shoes). Please note that you will be in close proximity to farm animals. 7 23. Exeter Cathedral West Front Friday 8 September 11am A 40 minute tour which looks in detail at the West Front image screen at the Cathedral and some of the figures contained within it. Exeter Cathedral Spearheads Fashion Thomas of Witney and his suite of liturgical furniture Friday 8 September 1pm A 30 minute tour exploring the work of Thomas of Witney, who worked on the building for the last years of its construction from He was responsible amongst other things for transforming the Norman towers into the Gothic transepts and for completing work on the Nave. Religious Houses of Exeter Friday 8 September 1.30pm Exeter has its origins in a 1C Roman city. In the 7C a Christian Minster was founded within the elaborately walled city of Exeter. In the 11C the Minster became our first Cathedral. Starting at the West front of the Cathedral, learn about Exeter as a religious city. Visit some of the medieval churches and hear about the history of a variety of religious buildings including Churches, Alms Houses, Synagogue and Priory. Meet outside Cathedral West Front 26. Exeter Cathedral The Stonemasons of Exeter Cathedral: Their Craft and Materials Friday 8 September 3pm This tour explores the work of the master masons who constructed the Cathedral over 900 years ago and how their techniques have evolved over the years. The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, University of Exeter Friday 8 September 10am 5pm Guided tour at 3pm The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum is Exeter s Cinema Museum, with artefacts covering the history of the moving image from shadow puppets and magic lanterns to the latest blockbusters. This is a public museum on the University of Exeter Streatham Campus with a unique collection of artefacts telling the story of cinema and its predecessors from the 17th century to the present day. Princesshay Upstairs, Downstairs Bedford Street Friday 8 and Saturday 9 September 10am, 12noon and 2pm A tour of Princesshay, both its public areas and the parts of the centre that the public do not get to see. The tour will feature public art installations and the centre s underground service areas where many of the activities which make Princesshay work take place. St. Thomas Tree Trail Cowick Street Saturday 9 September 10am A 2 hour guided tour of the St Thomas Tree Trails. Despite being one of Exeter s most densely populated urban areas, St Thomas benefits from some wonderful parks and green spaces. These spaces are home to some significant historic and striking trees so members of the local community have created a tree trail that showcases the diverse range of trees. Exeter Cathedral The Medieval Cathedral Saturday 9 September 11am Learn all about the life of the Cathedral during the medieval period and the role it played during this time, as well as finding out about some of the colourful characters involved in this period of history! 9 31. Exeter Children s Tour Saturday 9 September 11.30am A 60 minute tour with Exeter s Red Coat Guides, aimed at children aged 5 10 years old. This interactive tour will show Exeter in a lively and stimulating way. All children must be accompanied by an adult at a minimum ratio of 1 adult to 6 children. Meet outside Cathedral West Front 32. Exeter Blitz Saturday 9 September 11.30am 2017 commemorated the 75th anniversary of the air raids over Exeter. On this 90 minute Red Coat Guided tour discover how Exeter was affected and how this event shaped the city we see today. Meet outside Cathedral West Front 33. Exeter Cathedral - Styles and Construction of The Cathedral Saturday 9 September 1pm A tour exploring how the stone mouldings and artistic styles involved in the construction of the Cathedral have changed over the years and how different examples of these can be seen throughout the building. RAMM A Guided Tour Queen Street Saturday 9 September 11.30am and 2pm The Royal Albert Memorial Museum re-opened in 2011 after a major refurbishment, in 2012 it was awarded the prestigious Museum of the Year Award. Two guided tours available of the museum s permanent collections. Event not suitable for children under the age of 5. For information, call South Street Baptist Church Saturday 9 September 10am 1pm South Street Baptist Church has been used for worship for over 200 years and is located at the hub of the City Centre, close to Exeter Cathedral. It incorporates the Palace Gate Centre the Centre is used intensively throughout the 7 days of the week by a range of community groups as well the Church. During Heritage Open Days: a display about the history of the church with a particular emphasis on the story of the Blitz in 1942 and its aftermath, and the opportunity to be shown round both the Church and the Palace Gate Centre premises

St. Anne s Church Old Tiverton Road Saturday 9 September 10am 6pm An interesting 14th century chapel, now home of the Orthodox Parish of the Holy Prophet Elias, will be opening its doors to visitors. 37. St. Michael and All Angels Church Dinham Road Saturday 9 September 9am 6pm, Guided tour 2pm Sunday 10 September 10am 5pm, Sung Mass at 10.45am Open days at this magnificent Victorian church, intended as an almshouse chapel, but built on the scale of a cathedral at the expense of William Gibbs of Tyntesfield. Superb carvings, furnishings and stained glass. Exhibition of fine vestments. Discover the heritage of choral and organ music at St. Michael s and learn about our resident peregrine falcons. St Michael s has a Heritage Lottery Funded Project which has put a camera in the peregrines nest box in the spire and is installing a restored pipe organ in the church, as well as putting history, music and education resources on a new website. 38. St. Clement s Church Powderham EX6 8JJ Saturday 9 September 11am 5pm and Sunday 10 September 1pm 5pm Built in 1259, St Clement has been the family church for the Earls of Devon for 758 years. It is a beautiful ancient building, and is usually open only for Sunday service so this is a great chance to look around. Church services at Powderham follow the traditional Book of Common Prayer. Over the weekend there will be musical interludes and a free talk on the history of the church. Cream teas will be served from 11-5pm on Saturday and from 1 5pm on Sunday. 39. Dissenters Graveyard Magdalen Road Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September 11am 4pm View the now nearly fully restored Graveyard, with interpretation boards, historical information transcriptions of the monument inscriptions and, individual histories. On Saturday 9th at 2.30pm the West Gallery Quire in costume will sing hymns and psalm settings of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Bellair and County Hall Topsham Road Sunday 10 September 11am This 2 hour tour will reveal one of Exeter s hidden gems: 18th century villa Bellair with its fine plaster ceilings; as well as County Hall itself, a Grade II* listed post-war building. Oddities and Curiosities Sunday 10 September 11.30am A fascinating Red Coat Guided Tour, exploring sites and objects often overlooked by visitors. A chance to discover Exeter in a different light. Even if you have lived in Exeter all of your life, you will leave the tour having learned something new about the city. A fascinating tour of the curious or odd things you have passed and possibly never noticed, or perhaps wondered what they meant or why they were there. Meet outside Cathedral West Front 42. Grandisson The man and his chapel Exeter Cathedral Sunday 10 September 12.30pm A 45 minute guided tour to learn about our famous Bishop Grandisson who was instrumental in revising the important services of the Cathedral and completing the rebuilding in Gothic style. People, Plaques and Places Sunday 10 September 2.30pm A Red Coat Guided tour. A reminder of aspects of Exeter through public plaques, statues and monuments. St. Mary Steps Church Sunday 10 September 3pm A one-hour talk inside this recently restored 15th century parish church with fine Norman font, medieval wagon roofs and bosses, painted screen and fine 19th century furnishings. See the recently refurbished picturesque clock with automata. 45. Devon Wildlife Trust - Cricklepit Mill Sunday 10 September am 3pm Join Devon Wildlife Trust for a fun packed day at the charity s headquarters, Cricklepit Mill. Witness the historic mill in action, as volunteer millers start the water wheel turning and grind grain into flour. Cricklepit Mill, based near Exeter Quay, serves as Devon Wildlife Trust s headquarters and is recognised as an important part of the city s history, with over 800 years of milling heritage and Exeter s only functioning watermill. Milling demonstrations willl run from 10.30am 12.30pm and 1pm 3pm. Milling activities are highly dependent on the water levels on that day. Also take part in milling crafts, create wildlife homes, take a nature trail through the garden and go bug hunting. 46. Exeter Synagogue, Synagogue Place Sunday 10 September 10.30am 4pm Visitors can visit the historic Exeter Synagogue which was first opened in 1763, the third oldest Synagogue in the UK. This small synagogue is traditional in style and visitors can enjoy the characteristics of a Georgian building. Members of the congregation will be available to discuss aspects of the synagogue, its history and Jewish practice with visitors. We will not conduct individual tours but visitors will be welcomed individually or in small groups. 47. Poltimore House and Grounds Poltimore (EX4 0AU) Sunday 10 September 11am 4pm Poltimore House is one of the most fascinating historic estates in the South West. The property dates back to the sixteenth century and has an interesting past, discover this by visiting the House and Grounds and learn of the history and past uses of the property and grounds. Enjoy watching the Tudor Dancers in the Tudor Courtyard - maybe join in too! Visit the room where the Treaty of Exeter was signed in Stroll through the lime tree avenues and then enjoy a delightful light lunch or afternoon tea in the Chapel Tea Room. 48. Sidwell Street Methodist Church Sunday 10 September 2pm 4.30pm This Grade II* listed property is a dramatic Edwardian Church with a unique architecture and construction. Seating over 600 people it has an apparently unsupported balcony. Unusually for a Methodist Church it also has elaborate woodwork and stained glass. Built using a unique form of construction. The building has recently been completely refurbished.
