Rathlin Island lies 5.5 miles off the coast of Ireland. Situated just off the coast of Ballycastle it is home to one of the largest bird sanctuaries in Northern Ireland. In 1306, the Scottish King was driven from Scotland by Edward I of England and took refuge on Rathlin, where he watched a spider persevering repeatedly to bridge a gap with its web. Eventually it succeeded. Taking heart from the spider s efforts, he returned to Scotland and eventually regained his crown. This spectacular walk commences at Portballintrae, County Antrim and follows the spectacular coastal cliff top path along Runkerry Beach, via the famous Giant s Causeway to eventually reach the little hamlet of Portbradden, where participants turn and retrace their steps. This takes the total distance of the challenge walk to over 30km of stunning views and scenery. The path is well marked and defined and contains a number of stepped ascents and descents totalling over 900m and crosses rocky foreshores. The collection was curated by the Causeway Coast Arts Committee and the work includes painting, sculpture, prints, glass, ceramics and woven willow basketry. An altogether beautiful collection of work by very talented artists, who are mostly local to the North Coast. A selection of the work is currently on display in the Upper Gallery at Flowerfield. Using the concept of framework as a device within which to explore the relationship between space and the elements placed within, Alacoque s artwork plays with geometric forms and line; an enquiry into balance, alignment and placement. Central to the theme of the work is the idea of absence and the ambiguity of empty space. Working across several disciplines including ceramic, print, drawing and painting, Alacoque studied at John Moores University Liverpool graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art before gaining an MA from Ulster University. She has been a member of Queen Street Studios Belfast since 2003 and has exhibited widely including Denmark this Autumn.
