Spring 2015 Presentation of Nine Mile Portage : Join us on a journey into the City of Barrie s mysterious past! Nine Mile Portage is a guided tour developed by Theatre by the Bay to teach students about Barrie s history in a fun, entertaining and interactive way. Present-day Barrie was built at the head of an ancient portage trail used to reach the upper Great Lakes. Students will get a chance to walk in the footsteps of First Nations peoples, French explorers and English soldiers in a miniature version of the original portage (approximately 1.5 KM in length). Along the way they will hear stories and songs about events that have shaped the Barrie we know today. The performance includes a curriculum-based education package and a Q&A with the actors after the performance. The production will run from May 26 th, 2015 June 11 th, 2015, bookings are being accepted now. Book early to ensure your spot. Performance times will be arranged to suit the needs of the school group. Tickets $10 + HST per student. A bus will be provided. 3 3 Introduction This May and June, join us on a journey into the city of Barrie s mysterious past. Nine Mile Portage is a collective creation performance of song, story and movement developed over the course of the winter by five artists commissioned by Theatre by the Bay. Led by a guide, audiences will follow Barrie s lakeshore trail from the South Shore Centre to downtown Centennial Park. Along the way, audiences will witness and experience music and vividly enacted moments from Barrie s history, beginning from its humble origins as the eastern terminus of an Indian portage. Young or old, Nine Mile Portage is guaranteed to delight and entertain the whole family! Content The content of the tour depicts brief glimmers; moments from the last three hundred years in Barrie. A pre-european glimpse of the area when it was a portage trail; its strategic importance as a supply route in the War of Audiences will also see moments from the nearer past.

4 4 The Route The performance will begin in St. Vincent Sq. Park. The audience will then follow the waterfront trail west to Heritage Park. School buses pick the students up at the end of the trail.
