2 TINTAGEL PARISH COUNCIL ON-STREET PARKING AND USE OF LOADING BAYS Parking incorrectly, such as on double and single yellow lines or in loading bays, even for a few minutes, can cause inconvenience and even danger to other road users. There have been problems in recent weeks where private car drivers have been parking in the loading bays outside some of the businesses in the area, which has consequently meant that delivery vehicles have had to park on the street or at times in the entrance to Trevena Square. The Parish Council made improvements to the entrance to Trevena Square last year for the safety of locals and visitors alike. It is a shame that due to the actions of some drivers, i.e. parking in the loading bays, that certain delivery lorries are partly blocking the entrance to the permit holder s car park. If you have a permit to use the car park, please make the effort to use it to prevent congestion in the street. This matter has been reported to Cornwall Council and their Civil Parking Enforcement Officers will be issuing tickets where applicable. TINTAGEL SOCIAL HALL CONTROL OF UNAUTHORISED PARKING In May 2011, Tintagel Parish Council appointed Llawnroc Parking Services to patrol the parking spaces around the Social Hall, Tintagel and to issue Parking Charge Notices to owners of vehicles that are not attending events at the Social Hall. Appropriate signage will be displayed and patrols started shortly. If you are attending an event at the Social Hall and park your vehicle in one of the Social Hall parking spaces, you should enter your details on the parking log for that event. The parking log will be kept on a clipboard in the Hall. TINTAGELWEB WEBSITE Tintagel Parish Council is able to publish its Draft Minutes on a regular basis on and is grateful to Mr. David Flower for allowing such publication. Draft Minutes are normally available to view on the website from the Wednesday following the previous weeks meeting. Contact details for the Parish Council and its members are also available here. 3 USE OF CAR PARK IN TREVENA SQUARE AND SPACES IN VISITOR CENTRE CAR PARK FOR PERMIT HOLDERS There is no excuse for not displaying a valid permit if you qualify for one (i.e. your name appears on the Electoral Register for Tintagel). This matter has been the subject of articles in previous editions of the Parish Newsletter and a Permit Application Card will be reproduced regularly in this Parish Newsletter. If you require a new permit, please complete and return the copy of the card below to the Clerk, along with a stamped addressed envelope, and a new permit will be issued. YOU WILL RECEIVE A FINE IF YOU DO NOT DISPLAY A VALID PERMIT, IF THE PERMIT IS NOT VISIBLE OR IF YOU STAY OVER THE PERMITTED TIME. TREVENA SQUARE The Application for Scheduled Monument Consent to move the stone cross from outside the former Wharncliffe to Trevena Square is still being considered. It is hoped that a response will be received sometime during the summer to allow work to relocate the cross and re-landscape the area near the bike-rack during the Autumn. Page 3

4 TINTAGEL ORPHEUS MALE VOICE CHOIR Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir have had a busy Spring, following their success in the Wadebridge Music festival there were concerts at Halwill Junction and Bude, next it was to compete in the Cornwall International Festival of Male Voice Choirs where they were awarded 82 marks ( only a few points behind Stithians who won the cup for best Cornish Choir in the class). At the beginning of May the Choir and supporters enjoyed the annual week-end away with a visit to Stratford Upon Avon stopping en-route to sing in Gloucester Cathedral. Trips were enjoyed on the River Avon where the Choir entertained fellow passengers, Castle Bromwich to give a splendid concert in the Church and where they were joined by the Vicar and Len Vernon ( previous Choir members ) The next morning everyone travelled to Warwick Castle where the Choir were invited to sing in the Great Hall. The Choir were pleased to sing at the wedding of Morvenna and Daniel in St. Genny's Church and at Hazel Park, Laneast to help raise funds for Canworthy Water Chapel. The Choir now look forward to joining with the Bristol University Madrigal Ensemble on Sunday 26th June. 7 OLD POST OFFICE NEWS Thanks to all the wonderful weather we had in April, our garden was awash with daffodils, tulips and bluebells all at the same time, making a wonderfully colourful display. We all over indulged in chocolate over the Easter period and thanks to the Visitor Centre staff, our Easter trail was a success. We have lots of fun events planned over the next couple of months, so come along and get involved: 6-26 June Quilt exhibition. Come and see the house covered in quilts of all shapes, sizes and ages. Be inspired to create your own masterpiece and pick up some hints and tips. Sunday 12 th June Musician Anthony Rose Bring a picnic lunch to the Old Post Office and enjoy the musical talent of Anthony Rose who will be playing traditional tunes on his mix of instruments July- Art in the Garden A call for artists of all abilities to come and create a work of art inspired by the Old Post Office. Use paints, pastels, pencils or anything you can think of. Free entry for artists who work on their piece for 2 days or more. 27 July Rag rug workshop Our volunteer rag rug group will be back passing on their knowledge of all things relating to recycling scrap materials into beautiful rugs and cushions. We will be hosting our usual Summer Holiday Fun afternoons throughout every afternoon in August, so look out for special offer for locals in the next edition of this magazine. 8 CONCERT AT MINSTER CHURCH, BOSCASTLE Some of Cornwall s most renowned musicians will be visiting Boscastle in June. No one who appreciates beautiful music can afford to miss this opportunity to hear Alastair Taylor an internationally acclaimed professional pianist and organist. On this occasion he will also be the accompanist for three of the county s much recorded singers, Sydney Mitchell, David Rashleigh and Gareth Rees. Alastair Taylor, trained at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, on graduation he won the prize for best all round musician leading to several concert tours across Europe and Australia. But although internationally acclaimed, Alastair has always kept his roots firmly embedded in Cornwall where he spends endless hours promoting and encouraging other musicians and singers. As Musical Director of Four Lanes Male Choir he led it to class winners at an International Festival held in Truro. He is the Musical Director and accompanist of Redruth Operatic Society Trust Singers and the Redruth Operatic Society Junior Choir. His energy knows no bounds, he has also led the spectacular 200 strong Cornwall Symphony Chorus to numerous sell-out concerts since its creation. But the idyllic setting of Minster Church will not only ring to Alastair s music. The three soloists are equally acclaimed in the county where they have raised thousands of pounds for charity from their live appearances and sale of CDs. Sydney Mitchell like Alastair is a Cornish Bard and his beautiful bass-baritone voice is suited to many singing styles, from oratorio to swing. David Rashleigh, tenor often sings with Sydney in a partnership which has lasted some 25 years and the third soloist, Gareth Rees, baritone, has delighted audiences throughout the county and beyond. This feast of music will take place at Minster Church on Sunday 12 th June at 7pm. Tickets, Adults 7,Under 16s 4, to include cheese and first glass of wine or soft drink. 10 Tintagel Youth Football Club won two cups in the East Cornwall League finals day at Camelford on Sunday 22nd May. The under 10s played Pensilva in the League Cup Final winning 9-2, a great game to end their season, congratulations to all the players and Team Coach, Hedley Venning. The under 10s finished third in the League overall, another great achievement for the team. We are looking for extra players in this age group next season so if you are currently year 5 at Primary School and interested to play football please come along to the Playing fields to meet the team and the coach on any Thursday evening or call for further information. The under 15s played Tregony in the League Cup Trophy winning 3-0, a fantastic way to complete their successful season, congratulations to all the players and team Coach, Robin Haddy. The under 15s also collected their Runner's Up medals having finished second overall in the League this year. Page 10

11 The under 9s and under 6s have continued to do well in their matches and the under 9s are looking forward to taking part in the East Cornwall League next season. Well done to all the players and coach Kevin Jeskins who manages both teams. As we end this season we would like to say well done to all our players in all age groups who play for Tintagel Youth Football Club. We have a dedicated team of Coaches and players who are committed to playing the game in a competitive and fair manner. I would also like to thank the parents, carers, family and friends who support the Club throughout the year to ensure our players have full opportunity to play and represent Tintagel. We will be holding our AGM on Thurday 16th June at 7.30pm in the Cricket Club. Hilary Desousa Youth Club Secretary PARISH CHURCH NEWS A regular Evening Service, according to the Book of Common Prayer, will be held in St. Piran's Chapel, Trethevy, on the last Sunday of the month, at 3-30pm, between May and October inclusive. The first service will be held on Sunday 29 May. All are welcome TINTAGEL CHURCH FETE The Parish Church will be holding a church fete in the grounds of the Old Vicarage on Saturday 30 July, between 2pm and 5pm. (Thanks to the generosity of the new owner Carolyn Finlay). There will be the traditional stalls, plus cream teas and pancakes. All proceeds will be for church funds. Any offers to help man stalls or to provide prizes will be gratefully received. All are welcome. Page 11

12 TINTAGEL SEA ANGLING CLUB Sea temperatures have risen to 12 0 C and the summer species have started their return. The recent fine weather was expected to increase catches but that has not been the case, April and May have been difficult months with the fishing being very sporadic. The mackerel shoals have been moving on and offshore frequently chasing baitfish. We have also witnessed quite large early algae blooms thought to be Skeletonema so don t be surprised if you spot basking sharks. The bass are being caught mainly by bait methods but certainly not in the numbers they were this time last year on the lures. Fish of the month winner for March was Andrew Baker with an excellent shore caught black bream of 2lb 61/2 Ozs (107%) Garry Boyde took the award for April fish of the month with a fine mackerel. Boat fishing has been quite slow but pollack and cod have been plentiful which is a good sign. Some members have been to Dartmouth to fish the Skerries aboard Gemini for the early run of plaice and Ian Young caught a very creditable plaice of 3lb pictured right. Photo courtesy of Dave Harrison The efforts of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal with his Fish Fight go on and over 675,000 people have now signed up. It has already made a difference with major tuna processors committed to stop using indiscriminate fishing methods and leading supermarkets committed to supplying Fad-free tuna. Things moved further recently with Zac Goldsmith MP tabling an Early Day Motion supporting the campaign to eliminate the environmentally and economically damaging practice of discarding fish before landing. Up to half of all fish trawled in the North Sea are thrown back either dead or dying. Furthermore the EDM calls for the Government to demand strong reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy to institute a regionalised, ecosystems-based management framework, which incentivises the use of selective gear, uses real-time management, including temporary closures, and establishes ecosystem catch quotas rather than single-species landing quotas. At the time of writing 246 MP s have signed up to the motion including our representative for North Cornwall. Further details can be found at Page 12

13 I am also very pleased to hear that the coastguard stations are facing a possible reprieve. The transport secretary, Philip Hammond, said the government is "looking again" at planned cuts in the number of coastguard stations. This follows much condemnation of the government s plans around the country. We should all welcome this as the coastguard plays such an important role in preventing the loss of life around our coastlines. Forthcoming events during June and July include An all day collaboration match on Sunday 19 th June with the weigh in from pm and another match day on Sunday 17 th July with the weigh in between pm. The fish of the month competition for June is bass and for July is mullet. The big tides in June are on the 16 th & 17 th with the new moon on the 1 st and the full moon on the 15 th. The next general meeting will be held on Tuesday 7 th June at the Wootons Hotel at 7.30pm. Good luck Nigel. CORNWALL COUNCIL NEWS FROM COUNCILLOR GLENTON BROWN Trebarwith Village has suffered with increasing volumes of traffic including coaches and lorries, following their sat. nav. instructions for some considerable time. Hopefully we are to the point of resolving this problem. There is some excellent new signage at the West Downs entrance to Trebarwith village to put off all large vehicles and we do hope that this will prove the answer to an ever increasing problem! Also there have been drainage problems for some considerable time and we hope that Highways has now got to grips with that issue as well. We hope therefore that in future when we have severe winter weather the water will not be running over the roads and stopping up the two exits for water getting out of the area. 15 TINTAGEL GARDEN CLUB In April David Cook, a club member, described the techniques he employs when growing the extensive range of vegetables he produces from his garden in Tintagel; David uses as much of his home produced garden compost as he can, and recommends farmyard manure, which must be well rotted. His vegetables are grown in strict rotation, beginning with potatoes and wintergreens; salad crops should be sown regularly in small quantities, with the best flavour coming from fresh young produce rather than growing for size. Everyone learnt something from David who is well known to us all, and true to form, he chose to donate his fee to a local charity. Tim Ellis from Polyphant Nursery returned by popular demand in May to give a talk on Euphorhias - the second largest family to the Orchids - and are generally known as the poor relation of the Poinsettias. Their form can vary from a cactus like structure to velvet grey leaves; the outdoor varieties will succeed in a wide variety of soils, and there is a choice of plant to suit all our climate extremes. The leaves can be shades of green, blue-green, and bronze, with the small insignificant flowers being protected by coloured bracts, which are mainly yellows in the basic plant, but cross breading has produced many variations in colour including pinkish red and almost black. Their main use is to provide a contrast in the herbaceous border. Tim is a practical nurseryman, who has the ability to describe his many subjects in a way that can be easily understood and enjoyed. Our first outside visit was to the Japanese Garden and Bonsai Nursery at St Mawgan; this tranquil garden is designed as walk ways, planted with a wide range of mainly foliage varieties, with seated areas and the sound of running water round every corner. The central pond drew everyone's attention with the collection of colourful carp that gave a splashing display at feeding time. The bonsai collection is vast with prices ranging from a few pounds to thousands! The day concluded at the local post office and tearooms - excellent homemade cakes and refreshments; this was a very social afternoon where even the weather was on our side. 16 TINTAGEL MEMORIAL PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION I have used the Chairman's Report to the Annual General Meeting that was held on the 30 th March as the article for this month because we had so few of the local population attend even though the meeting was well advertised in the press and on notice boards locally. However, I would stress that a very small section of our community is causing huge problems by senselessly vandalising the Playing Fields Area. The damage only takes the mindless idiots who perpetrate it moments to do but takes a great deal of time, effort and money to repair. The latest damage has been to the children's play area where the safety matting at the bottom of the slide has been torn up and pieces of it thrown into the main road. It is pointless to appeal directly to the perpetrators in a magazine such as this to stop their stupid antics because they are not responsible enough citizens to be reading it in the first place. However, I appeal to all right minded citizens to take action if they see acts of vandalism. I would ask that anyone who does see such acts being perpetrated calls 999 and reports it. If they recognise the people responsible, please report them to the Police. Phil Hasbrig-Hartley, Chairman of the Trustees TINTAGEL MEMORIAL PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 30 th MARCH, 2011 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The last year has been one of the busiest in the history of the TMPFA. It has seen the development of the Skate Park, the installation of lighting for the Tennis Courts and an inspection by the Charities' Commission to ensure that we are running the TMPFA as a charity providing services for the benefit of the public. The Skate Park is proving to be extremely popular with the younger generation. The lighting on the tennis courts is complete and we hope that it will increase the usage of the courts. The inspection by the Charities' Commission is complete and their report states that there are no items which require attention as far as they are concerned. When it comes to a report by the Charities' Commission, that is praise indeed. The Children's Play Area is in good order and is in almost constant use. The rest of the grounds are in prime condition thanks to the groundsmen who give so much of their time Page 16

17 free of charge. It is appropriate that we include in the minutes of this meeting our gratitude to them for their ongoing efforts and support without which we would be hard pressed to maintain the quality of the playing areas. We have hosted Camelford RFC for the second season running and we are very grateful indeed for their contribution of assistance in many of the projects concerning maintenance of the grounds. We have also planned the first of what we hope will be an ongoing series of Music Festivals, TINSTOCK11, which will take place on Saturday 20 th August, (This was discussed under item 7 of the agenda) We have managed to maintain a reasonable balance in the financial account. However, with increased costs, we have had to address the matter of maintaining a healthy balance in the future and we will need to address that problem in this meeting under item 8 of the agenda. (In that agenda item it was agreed to increase the standing Club Contribution by per year for each club) Our success is that we have had many more people using the facilities in the last year than ever before. However, it is a sad fact that, with success of this kind, there often comes a social problem. There has been a marked increase in the number of acts of sheer vandalism around the Playing Fields in the last few months. The Trustees take this matter very seriously because of our responsibility for the safety of the public who use the area or live near it. As a result, we have asked for the help of the Police in this matter as well as requesting help in monitoring the area by the neighbours of the Playing Fields. We are confident that we will ultimately eradicate the problem but are well aware that it will require constant effort and vigilance to do so. Finally, organisations such as the Playing Fields Association rely on voluntary help to survive. I consider that the success of the last year of the TMPFA is due, in the most part, to the efforts of those particular Trustees who give most of their free time either directly or indirectly year after year for the good of the Association. I would like to thank three Trustees in particular: Dave Littlejohns, Guy Keenan and Steve Brown who, between them, keep this whole show running. 18 Tintagel Skate Park Further Update Since my update on the Tintagel Skate Park in the last newsletter, we have unfortunately encountered a delay in the work required to bring the facility to full completion, as the company that is scheduled to carry out the repainting and sound deadening work hasn t been able to find a window of opportunity to do so. Therefore, the official opening of the skate park has regrettably been postponed for the time being. Many thanks to the people who volunteered their time to help with the ground work on Sunday 10 th April. There were disappointingly few, but those who did turn up worked very hard, and their efforts were much appreciated. Infuriatingly, vandalism is still an on-going problem at the Tintagel Memorial Playing Fields. In the last few days some of the rubberised surface of the children s play area has been ripped up and thrown into the road! This is especially dismaying as the play area is for young children, and the damage has most definitely been intentionally caused by older children or youths, too old to legitimately be using the play area at all. The cost to repair this damage will be considerable, and the playing fields are run on charity and good will, with no profit to anyone involved, and lots of time and effort volunteered. This vandalism is therefore directly damaging the good will of the community of Tintagel, and I strongly urge anyone who knows anything about the perpetration of these crimes to report them to the police, or to pass the information on to the playing fields committee, so that they can do so. On a positive note, we are all looking forward to Tinstock, Tintagel s first charity fundraising music festival to be hosted at the playing fields on the 20 th of August this year.
