1 Helensburgh Highlights Last week at the K-6 Assembly our students witnessed the Gabrielle Johnstone in Year 4. She rang Triple Zero (000) when her mum became extremely ill. Gabrielle was being recognized for her calmness and composure as well as her ability to assist Emergency Services with the correct information. This incident highlights the need for all children to be able to ring 000, know their house number and street name, and even the closest cross street. Gabrielle is to be congratulated and serves as an example to all students and families in our community. PARKING Parents are reminded that there are parking restrictions around our school. Presently, real congestion is being experienced in Lukin Street when parents stop their cars to allow students to be dropped off at school. The area at the top of Lukin Street can easily become a dangerous place given the constricted and restricted parking and No Stopping zones. It would be better for our students and staff for parents to use the entrance in Fletcher Street to drop the children in the mornings. SICK CHILDREN A child who is sick at school will find learning very difficult. If your child appears to be unwell, please do not send them to school. Sick children tend not to improve but to become more unwell as the school day progresses. It is important if you are working parents to have emergency contacts who are prepared to take your child home in the event of ongoing sickness or even accident. It helps greatly, especially with younger children that they know and have met this contact. SCHOOL GARDENS Great work is being done in the school vegetable gardens at the moment. If you can spare a few hours on a Thursday, NO GAPS, NO EXCUSES This Thursday a group of teachers will be undertaking mandatory training in Aboriginal Cultural Awareness. The first Module in No Gaps, No Excuses is an introduction to Australian Aboriginal History and the need for schools to be active in addressing the specific cultural issues and learning needs of Aboriginal students. Christopher Connor Principal ZONE CROSS COUNTRY The Engadine Zone Cross Country was held at Miranda Park on Friday, 7th June. Ninety six (96) children from Helensburgh Public School attended. All competitors tried their hardest in all of the events in very muddy conditions. We had some amazing results, not only from our placegetters but from all the runners who supported their team and school. Well done! Results are as follows:- Division A: 1st Engadine West 2nd Lucas Heights 3rd Helensburgh Division B: 1st Helensburgh 2nd Bangor 3rd Engadine West Total Points Winner: Engadine West Handicap Winner: Helensburgh The Regional Carnival will be held this Friday, 14th June. 2 Band News PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS Jiah and Nicola performed at the Snowy Mountains Music Festival on the June long weekend. They recreated their flute and saxophone performance in the show Señor Rabbit, previously performed last school holidays at the Monkey Baa Theatre in Darling Harbour. It was a great weekend of music, fun and even a bit of snow! BAND FEST 2013 Notes have gone home today for the students involved in Band Fest next week. You can reduce the load in your bin, and on landfill, and take advantage of this easy school drop off point. The P&C is considering engaging CPR Health to deliver the program to all Helensburgh Public School students later in the year. Your input would be most welcome! 3 CANTEEN N EWS Next Tuesday 18 th June is Tasty Tuesday Nuggets, herb bread, popper and an apple. Great value meal deal $5. Order forms will be sent home this week and should be returned to the canteen with money by Monday 17 th June. Normal menu will also operate on the day. We hope everyone liked the wonderful prizes that were supplied by the NRL for our lucky draw on Blues Day. Thanks also to the lovely ladies that assisted in the canteen and also those who supplied cakes and biscuits to sell. Thank you to everyone who ordered pies. lasagne and macaroni cheese on our menu as well as jaffles so in this cold weather everyone can enjoy something nice and warm.
