4 Kirstie Macleod: Lacrimosa Design your own Guernsey inspired garment Follow the five easy design steps: Details of the Lacrimosa dress by Kirstie Macleod the greenhouse, 2009 The Lacrimosa dress and performance on show in the greenhouse is inspired by Guernsey folklore and stories of shipwrecks and lost sailors at sea. The dress is knitted entirely of fishing line and the bodice of the dress follows the same pattern as the guernsey (jumper). The guernsey jumper was worn by guernsey fishermen, knitted for them by their mothers, wives or sisters. Each family had their own unique jumper pattern that was passed down from generation to generation Step 1. 6 The Merpeople and Old Man Tostevin An old man, Matthieu Tostevin, living at Le Chene in Forest parish, went ormering one beautiful summer day at Petit Bôt. As he went down toward the rocks he came across six mermaids and mermen playing at the water s edge. Old Man Tostevin fell madly in love with one of the mermaids but she was playing a mean game with the old man, pretending she loved him. The mermaid laughed as she slipped away into the sea, leaving the old man heart broken. Old Man Tostevin was so depserate to see the mermaid again he took his fishing boat out to sea, hoping to get a glimpse of the half-girl, half-fish creature again. A storm started to blow and the waves grew as high as a house. Old Man Tostevin could hear singing in the distance, it was the mermaid singing her syren song, luring Old Man Tostevin in his fishing boat towards the rocks where she was sat. The storm swelled and Old Man Tostevin s boat was thrown onto the rocks and smashed into 1000 pieces. The merpeople captured the drowning man and took him to the bottom of the sea where they cooked him up and ate him at a big Merpeople banquet. OR write your own folklore below:

7 Step 2. Brainstorm: Taking your folklore write down colours, textures, words that can be associated with your selected tale. Complete the mind map below: Chosen folklore title:

8 Step 4. Begin designing your garment: Use the drawn models to begin sketching designs for your garment. Include colour options, and if you would like also include fabric/ texture ideas, alongside the drawings. Step 3. Create a mood board: Collect materials, images, fabrics, textures that visually represent the words you wrote down while brainstorming. Look through magazines, newspapers, old photographs, in the recycling at home, online for fashion based images, any fabric scraps you may have, buttons, threads, drawings, postcards etc. Also research fashion designers for inspiration of shapes and style of garment design. Kirstie Macleod is inspired by Vivienne Westwood and Hussein Chalayan. Bring all of your collected materials together to create a mood board, as Kirstie Macleod did for her Lacrimosa piece (shown below).
