2 THE PERFECT STAGE FOR EVENTS EventScotland, the national events agency and a directorate within VisitScotland, works to strengthen and promote Scotland s events industry. EventScotland does this by attracting, developing and sustaining a portfolio of world-class events for Scotland. EventScotland is working with the events industry to deliver against Scotland: The Perfect Stage, the national events strategy which will lead the country through to Our 2020 Vision for Scotland Scotland established as the perfect stage for events. Our Mission to deliver this Vision To develop a portfolio of events that delivers impact and international profile for Scotland.

3 03 CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER REPORT Paul Bush OBE This year s Review tells a story of ambition to continue to build the country s credentials as a worldleading events destination. The World Pipe Band Championships, an event funded as part of Homecoming in 2009, showcases the best of Scotland s heritage and traditions. Welcome to EventScotland s Annual Review, providing a report on our work between April 2009 and the end of March The Review starts with a report card, presenting the national events agency s results at a glance. Amongst the stand out facts and figures is EventScotland s economic impact which is estimated at more than 51.5 million for the year. This is the return on our investment in Scotland s portfolio of events and the Review clearly demonstrates that EventScotland has supported events across the country and throughout the year, through our International and National Events Programmes. Each year the quality and success of events in Scotland grows, with new ideas and new ways of inspiring audiences coming to the fore. The 09/10 portfolio is no exception. This year s Review tells a story of ambition to continue to build the country s credentials as a worldleading events destination. These credentials are borne out by feedback from international event owners and the results achieved. Whether through the delivery of events like The Heineken Cup Final at Murrayfield, The Rally of Scotland in Perth and Kinross and Stirling or The MOBO Awards in Glasgow. As well as the events delivered in this reporting period, a number of new events were secured for future years. These included sailing s prestigious Laser Radial World Championships; The Golden Oldies World Hockey Festival, capitalising on the highly successful Golden Oldies Rugby Festival staged in Edinburgh in 2008; and Touch Rugby s biggest event, the Touch World Championships. EventScotland is working to ensure that each success provides a further step along the path to enhancing Scotland s reputation as the perfect stage for events. The year covered in this Review was in many ways a landmark year, with Homecoming Scotland 2009 uniting the events industry in creating a special programme of celebration - the most complex ever created in Scotland. For Homecoming, EventScotland invested an additional 3 million in the events industry. As well as the immediate impacts of the year, Homecoming has created a series of legacies for Scotland and for the events industry. These are covered in this Review and provide a platform from which to build events in Scotland as we work towards 2014 with the Commonwealth Games, The Ryder Cup and Scotland s next year of Homecoming. Although Homecoming was a Scottish Government initiative led by EventScotland and VisitScotland, it was the development of wide, strong partnerships that increased Homecoming s success. Partnership is the common theme through all of our work and I take this opportunity to publicly thank all our partners who have helped EventScotland create the success story told in this year s Review. I also thank the EventScotland team for their continued hard work and dedication.

12 21 HOMECOMING SCOTLAND AND THE ROAD TO 2014 Independent research set out the positive impact of Scotland s first ever year of celebration, with Homecoming delivering a string of benefits to the country and bolstering Scottish event and tourism industries during one of the toughest economic downturns. The results were so impressive that 2014 has been designated as the next year of Homecoming. The key findings in the report from EKOS, a leading economic and social development consultancy included that 53.7 million of additional tourism revenue was generated for Scotland, representing a return on investment of nearly 10:1 and 22 per cent above the target set for the year, with 95,000 visitors to Scotland influenced to travel as a result of Homecoming. HEART OF HOMECOMING Homecoming was a unique concept that represented the largest collaborative tourism initiative Scotland has ever staged. The year provided an unprecedented opportunity to raise Scotland s profile and gave the country a distinctive voice and a unique proposition in a crowded and highly competitive global marketplace. At the heart of Homecoming was an inspirational programme of more than 400 events which engaged and motivated audiences to join the special year of celebration. The programme offered a mix of brand new events and exciting enhancements to existing events, providing a strong identity and clear focus to the year. Events took place in all 32 local authority areas of Scotland with a wide range of event organisers taking part. This included schools and community groups through to major commercial organisations, ensuring that everything from indigenous Scottish sports to 21st century Scottish innovations, to arts and ancestry took centre stage. Many existing events reported record attendance levels, whilst the introduction of new events along with the scale of partnership provides an important legacy for the future. EventScotland invested 3 million in Scotland s events industry through Homecoming. 111 events were directly funded; more than half of which were brand new events created specifically for the year. Event organisers who participated in the year stated their support for a future Homecoming with 90 per cent saying that they would take part again. DELIVERING THE LEGACY Looking ahead, the excitement and drive created by the year has been harnessed in a series of legacy projects, allowing Scotland to continue to develop the benefits brought by Homecoming. These include: A Framework for Diaspora Engagement to continue the work started by Homecoming. EventScotland has led on an events programme to celebrate St Andrew s Day, building on the success of Homecoming s finale. Partnerships established across public, private and voluntary sectors are assisting with the planning of new national initiatives. Continued benefit to Scotland from the international profile created through successful PR and marketing campaigns. Homecoming has also generated an inbuilt cultural legacy for Scotland by engaging communities and stimulating participation. It promoted national and international interest in Robert Burns, the inspiration for the year in what was the 250th anniversary of his birth, whilst celebrating and promoting many of Scotland s other great contributions to the world. In a further move to build on the success of the year, the Scottish Government has adopted a series of strategic focuses for the promotion of Scotland in the build up to Scotland s growing reputation for world-class food and drink has been the first focus, with EventScotland a key partner, providing funding to events to enhance their food and drink offering.
