We are starting a little earlier than usual so we can get our business out of the way before tea and our speaker on the subject Grenada at Chelsea. It is surprising how quickly the past year has gone and I do hope you have all enjoyed your various U3A activities. I would suggest that we have all advanced our knowledge of the various subjects and activities we have engaged through the Groups and our monthly speakers. A few new Groups started this past year and that is very heartening to see. For them and all our Groups to flourish please give them your support. Can I encourage those of you who are eligible to fill in the Gift Aid section on the enrolment forms? I know some organisations only require you to register for Gift Aid once but it does help our administration of the scheme if you would kindly fill in the form each year. Subscriptions for the year were due on 1 April. Finally I would like to thank you all for supporting our U3A during the past year. 4 Broomfield U3A Group Reports Art Group It is now the time of year when we should be able to paint "en plein air". Can I remind painters to prepare for all weathers - a flask of coffee/tea if it is cold, brolly, and some warm protective clothing - if very warm, some sun screen and cold drink. We welcome new members to come and join in - members of the group are of different standards, we just meet up to enjoy the relaxation of sketching and painting outside in the beautiful Essex countryside. May 17th - Broomfield Church area meet on the green at Broomfield Church June 7th - Meet at Junction of School Lane and Elm Close to paint farmland June 21st - No meeting due to holiday July 5th - Little Waltham water meadows meet at the junction of The Street and Winckford Close July 19th - Broomfield Mill - Meet at the bottom of Mill lane Aug 2nd - Chelmsford Cathedral meet in the Cathedral grounds All sessions are from 10 am - 12 noon weather permitting. If it is really bad weather the session will be held at my house Jo Bowman Group Our last session was on Monday 24th April and was enjoyed by all. Our future dates are: Monday, 8th May, 5th June, 19th June, 3rd July, 17th July (all between 12-1 pm) Please contact me if you want to come along, all new members welcome. Book Club We met up on Thursday, 27th April to discuss our latest book choice, Constance by Rosie Thomas. Constance was a foundling, a child left by her mother for strangers to find. Forty years on she has created a flawless shell for herself and is a successful musician living in Bali. When she hears her adoptive sister is dying she has to return to London. Surrounded by her family can Constance make her peace with who she really is and who she loves. Once again mixed reviews on this book, a few found it an extremely good read whilst others found it tedious and boring. On the whole an average book. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 25th May at Broomfield Library and will be at the later time of 3.30 pm. New members always welcome. Our May walk will be 5½ miles along a pretty route (if the bluebells are out they were in leaf when I saw them in mid-april) around Ugley! We will meet at 9.30am in the Royal British Legion car park, Saxon Way on Tuesday 16th May Please let me know if you are coming so that I can advise the pub. The usual mobile will be operative on the day. HEART & SOLE - for those that want a far shorter walk at a gentler pace around the gardens of Broomfield Hospital - less than one mile. We meet in the Main Atrium of the Hospital at lunchtime on the first and third Thursdays of each month - 4th & 18th May and 1st & 15th June If you fancy a slightly longer walk the Heart & Sole SUMMER SOLSTICE STRIDE will take place on Thursday 22nd June 2017 from 6.30pm. Entry fee 3 with the walk raising money for MacMillan Cancer and the Essex Air Ambulance. See ad on next page. BROOMFIELD FOOTPATH SOCIETY are always looking for more people to join them. Walks are on alternate Sundays in Spring & Autumn are Wednesday evenings in the Summer. Look out for this year s programme in Broomfield Times. Malcolm Taylor

5 Walking Group Bridge We meet to the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. There have been occasional blips! I would ask you to let me know in good time if you are not able to come to a meeting- there is a lot of preparation for each session- you know, lesson planning! Next session on the 22nd May (4th Monday.) If anyone is interested in joining our group, you will be very welcome. Please contact me Melanie Pimm. Canasta The Canasta Group will now meet on the first and third Mondays. Same time, same place. Marie Mackie Cookery No report this month. Our April walk enabled us to walk off all the Easter Eggs acquired a few days before. Our walk was seven miles, although if the distance from the pub car park and back to the start of the walk was taken into account it was 8 miles! This led to the introduction of the term, by some, Malcolm s Miles!! Our route took us from Galleywood Common (over the A12) to Crondon Park Golf Course, via Margaretting Tye to Stock. The sun shone and we were able to see many bluebells in the surrounding woods and hedgerows. Not far from Margaretting we picked up St.Peter s Way which took us through Stock and past it s windmill before our paths diverged and we continued north-westwards. We headed towards The Ship on Stock Road, but we were not to stop here, but continued across the road and through Forest Lodge Farm. From here we once again turned towards the A12 and headed up the length of Galleywood s racecourse. Finally reaching the Horse & Groom for lunch. Discussion Group The next meeting will take place on May 17 th at at the usual venue.. There are a couple of topics up for discussion but we would like another U3A member to come to the group with a discussion topic and their choice. Come along and introduce the topic that you would like the group to discuss. More members are always welcome. Thelma Nickerson Over lunch there was a discussion as to whether we should continue with our original plan to visit The Naze at Walton or undertake a different route which had the potential to offer sweeps of bluebells. A little like a Turkish election the result was ambiguous; like a Turkish election the decision was made by the President see below for next month s walk!

June Please note times are 3pm. Thursday, 8th June at 3pm. Wednesday, 28th June at 3pm. Last month we learnt to love soil! It's that stuff in which things grow that we all take for granted, but it is ploughed and enriched by worms. Worms help to turn rock into soil and add humus in the process. We all brought handfuls of soil and examined it closely and made friends with worms. The next session on Tuesday 23rd May,. We will be looking at Atlantic volcanoes from Iceland to Tristan da Cunha via the Azores and the Canaries. They all share the same geological context which we will view on some speeded up videos. If you have a souvenir - preferably a rocky one - from any of these islands, do bring it along. We are planning our summer visits out and about, so watch this space. Ros Muriel Whiting Natural History Group 11 of us met on a cool, breezy but sunny morning at Lingwood Common to admire the carpets of English Bluebells which were out in great profusion. We saw the difference between the English and the more common Spanish bluebells found in most people's gardens. We also identified various trees, the most abundant in this area being Oak and Hornbeam. We also saw a good example of Oak Apples which are caused by the larva of a small wasp injecting chemicals in the tree. We eventually retired to a local tea shop where we all enjoyed a beverage and food. No up to date report this month Photo group meeting on 18 March was pleased to welcome back those members who'd been unable to attend the first meeting of the New Year, and our photo shoot on the South Bank.
