2 Introduction Introduction As part of the Scottish Government s programme of themed years, 2018 has been identified as the Year of Young People, aiming to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrating their achievements, and valuing their contribution to communities and creating new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally. In honour of Year of Young People 2018, Argyll and Bute intends to celebrate some of the reasons young people love living and growing up here. We have co-produced an innovative calendar of events, projects and experiences to celebrate the top ten. Our Vision Celebrate and recognise Argyll and Bute as a great place for young people to live and grow up. Our Mission Deliver an aspirational programme for the Year of Young People 2018, providing a range of activities, experiences and events across Argyll and Bute. objectives Provide a platform for young people to have their views heard and acted upon Showcase the amazing talents of young people through events and media Develop better understanding, co-operation and respect between generations Recognise the impact of teachers, youth workers and other supporting adults on young people s lives Provide opportunities for young people to express themselves through culture, sport and other activities 2
3 What is Year of Young people? Year of Young People 2018 is an opportunity to celebrate the amazing young personalities, talents, and achievers that make up Scotland. It s all about inspiring our nation through its young people s ideas, attitudes and ambitions. This year long programme of events, activities and ideas will give young people in Scotland the opportunity to show the world what they re made of. Year of Young People 2018 is something everyone can support (young or young-at-heart) and be immensely proud of. Aim Year of Young People 2018 aims to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrate their achievements, value their contribution to communities and create new opportunities for them to shine locally, nationally and globally. Activity for the Year of Young People 2018 will be based around six key themes... Culture Share and celebrate young people s talent and contribution to Scottish culture and arts. Health and Wellbeing Make sure young people have the chance to lead healthy, active lives and understand the importance of mental health and resilience. Equality and Discrimination Recognise the positive impact of young people on Scotland and encourage them to take the lead in challenging all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Enterprise and Regeneration Celebrate young people s role in innovation, entrepreneurship and the Scottish economy as well as making Scotland a greener and more pleasant place to live. Participation Give young people the chance to influence decisions that affect their lives. Education Allow young people to have more say on their education and learning 3
4 Local Ideas Consultation and Findings We started off by consulting with a group of young people during our young leaders programme in early June With their imput we decided on the theme and rough plan. We then developed the survey which was tested with a group of young people in as part of a Have Your Say event, before being rolled out across Argyll and Bute. In total 1055 young people took part, the results are shown below. Young people were asked to pick the top five reasons they love living and growing up in Argyll and Bute. We have developed our programme of events for 2018 with these in mind, while also keeping with the six key themes. We will use # s to ensure young people can #ABbeautiful #ABoutdoors #ABfreedom #ABnature Total number of Ranking Reponses Safe Outdoors Easy to stay in touch Nature Quiet and peaceful Beautiful Freedom Sport/ recreation Less Likely to spend money Easy to get involved Your Voice is heard 114 Loads of Opportunities 110 Education 137 Community Spirit 110 Traditions 109 Other 8 #ABquietandpeaceful 4
