Find us at Dear friends, God s love - the heart of Christmas It feels very special that my first letter to you through our magazine should be through the Christmas issue. I always enjoy Christmas although it is a very hectic time as well. Indeed mention Christmas and people come up with a wide range of responses, It s for the children, It s getting the family together, it s an expensive time with a lot of cooking, and, of course, some just say, I ll be glad when it s over. I can understand all those responses. It is a special time for children and families - but sadly for that very reason, it can be difficult for many others - those without children, or whose family life is a struggle. It certainly can be very expensive - although we do actually have a choice on how much we spend! You do not need to spend a lot to have a really magical Christmas. And it can certainly all be a bit manic! The thing is it is easy to let the present buying, the food shopping and the entertaining distract us and become the focus - and then it can all seem a bit hollow. But we need to remember that at the heart of Christmas there is a love story - God s love for every woman, man and child on planet earth and that love is shown in God coming down to live us one of us, living amongst us - that really is something we to celebrate. The great truth is that when the food has been eaten, the presents unwrapped and all the guests have gone, the love of God still remains. Come along to one of our Christmas services and find out more about the love that is at the heart of Christmas - you ll be very welcome. As we prepare to celebrate God coming down to live among us as one of us. My wife and I want to thank everyone for the warmth of welcome we have received as we come among you. And we do wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yours, Colin

7 Village News PTA Fundraising Events We have recently had some great fundraising events organised by our fantastic PTA. There was a brilliant Bingo Night where parents and children enjoyed several games of Bingo. There were lots of prizes and several interesting games where parents and children had to find odd items like belts and hairclips in order to win a prize. Lots of fun was had by all! We also had our annual Pumpkin Party - there were numerous stalls for children to buy eyeball lollies, ghastly nail varnish, other spidery and ghostly delights to eat or drink! The children wore horrifyingly good costumes and had clearly put lots of effort and hard work into their fabulous pumpkin carvings. The school entrance looked amazing with the glowing pumpkins along the path. New Staff We are delighted to welcome two new members of staff to our team, Mr Hitchman and Mrs Sampson. We extend a big Andoversford Welcome to them both. Christmas Celebrations We have lots of exciting events and activities planned in the run up to Christmas including a Christmas party and a trip to the Everyman Theatre in December to see the pantomime, Sleeping Beauty..oh, yes we are! N a t i v i t y The children are rehearsing for our Nativity at the moment. We would like to invite community members and parents of The Ark children to our Dress Rehearsal which will be held on Friday 12th December at 9.30am. Other performances for parents and family members will be on Monday 15th December at 2pm and 5.45pm and on Tuesday 16th December at 5.45pm. The performance on Tuesday evening will be followed by Victorian Carol Singing Procession through the village. Everyone is welcome to join us as we walk down towards Station Road. On behalf of all the Staff at Andoversford Primary School, we would like to thank everyone for their help and support during 2014 and wish everyone a very happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. S E V E N H A M P TON AND DISTRICT W. I. Our activities last month, it seems, all went very well. The Jumble Sale produced a healthy profit, the Craft Day was much enjoyed, members carrying off various elegant and artistic items they had made, and the skittles provided much hilarity! Looking forward, we shall have the Flower Arranging workshop on December 8th, for which places are still available, and five members have signed up to go to see the Christmas decorations at Blenheim Palace. Our November speaker, Mrs Angela Panrucker, spoke with her usual wit and enthusiasm on the subject of Gloucestershire Pub Signs, accompanied by some excellent photographs. It was sad to hear that so many of these amusing and historical signs are rapidly disappearing, together with a good many of the pubs themselves. Clearly it is our duty to go along and make the most of both! December 1st will be our Annual Meeting, followed by a festive social evening. Members are asked to bring along a picture of themselves in their preschool years. That sounds like a recipe for a good giggle and a jolly way to end the year. Merry Christmas!

8 Village News Dragonflies During the first part of the autumn term, Dragonfly class have been enjoying a journey back in time to the Stone Age! We have studied a fabulous children s classic novel alongside this Stig of the Dump and have had great fun re-creating cave paintings and other Stone Age artwork. We have even made our own paint out of natural materials as they would have done in the Stone Age (but we decided to NOT use ear wax to bind our paint!) Busy Bees Busy Bees have settled in well in their wonderful new classroom! For the first half of this term we have studied bees, learning lots of interesting facts about Bumblebees and Honeybees, which the children found exciting. It certainly created a buzz in the school! The children particularly said that they enjoyed tasting the different types of honey, from pure and runny to smooth, honeycomb and Manuka and baking delicious honey flapjacks to share with the rest of the school. Butterflies Our reception children are flourishing in the new foundation stage unit and during the early autumn term, they have completed phase 2 and started phase 3 of their Letters and Sounds. This is ahead of where they are expected to be and has meant that they have all been taking reading books home to share with their parents and show them how good they already are at reading! Ladybirds and Caterpillars We have enjoyed sharing the story of The whale and the Snail. Their follow up activities included making snail trails, baking snail savoury treats and using props to re-tell the story. A particular favourite activity for them this term was seeing the policemen at our Grand Opening, following this, our children wanted to turn their role play area in to a fire engine, so we did! u Andoversford & District Horticultural Society At our October meeting held in the Village Hall on the 22nd, Mr Robert Jackson of Sevenhampton gave a most interesting illustrated talk on a recent trip he made to Australia. Our November meeting will be the Annual General Meeting to be held at Naunton Downs Golf Club followed by a ploughman s supper. The December meeting on Friday 19th is our Christmas Social Evening commencing at 7.30 pm in Andoversford Village Hall. New members are always welcome.
