The weekend was great fun and the weather stayed sunny for the majority of the time. Children not just from Dundee came along with their families and friends to play by the vehicle. Lesley Paterson Information Worker lesley@workingonwheels.org Bristol Office Brunswick Court Brunswick Square Bristol BS2 8PE T F E. info@workingonwheels.org W. They participated in making their own plant pots, making carrier bags out of old newspapers and leaf print pictures. The children also made amazing dens and investigated the Creative Cascade and built fantastic models using the maximec construction. 3 It was even better that we got to meet new children as well has some that had visited POW before! Caithleen Bell made the best birthday cake for POW ever and it was enjoyed by all that visited us on the Saturday. The year has been very eventful from visiting local schools and community events to regular visits to streets where children and parents have been playing together. We have worked in partnership with Dundee City Council, Community Family Support Project, Dundee Healthy Living Initiative and many other local projects throughout the year for one off sessions or 6 week block sessions. We even had a visit from Adam Ingram, Minister for Children and Early Years in February. As we have become so popular, we have even been approached by Angus Council, afterschool clubs in Angus, Fife schools, Fort Community Centre in Edinburgh and Women's Aid in Perth. The project looks set for another busy year as more organisations and schools book visits. Many thanks to everyone who has shown the project support over this past year. We have greatly appreciated the donated items and recycled materials that people have given us and the children have had great pleasure in playing with it all!
What s up on The Reading Bus? The Reading Bus was thrilled to have a visit from Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Rothesay at King's College, University of Aberdeen on Thursday 20th January The Duchess stepped on board the Reading Bus to hear more about the project from Jenny Watson as well as having a flavour of the Millie Tour by author Sheena Blackhall. This event was an opportunity to highlight the fantastic work done by the Reading Bus which includes: Reading Radio each week a live one hour radio show is broadcast by pupils on SHMU 99.8FM. Thanks to funding from Children in Need and in partnership with SHMU Radio, Rich Langham has joined the project as a Reading Radio Development Worker. Pupils will demonstrate their skills at creating jingles as well as recording interviews.
Moving Flicks an animation programme funded by TAQA Bratani Ltd which involves 18 schools and over 400 pupils in creating their own animated films through working as part of a team with storytellers, artists, musicians and animators. The finished films will be showcased at a series of film festivals in A Journey through Old Aberdeen a Heritage Lottery Funded project that involved eight schools researching different aspects of the rich history and culture of Old Aberdeen, working in partnership with the University of Aberdeen. The visit was a huge success with many of the children commenting that it was the best day of their lives and The Duchess of Rothesay concluded that for her it had been a magical journey. 6 The Mobile Play Barn Driving back from Glasgow one day a "stag party bus" passed us and got us thinking, we could start a mobile business? Knowing how much our own children absolutely loved visiting soft play centres, we decided to have our very own mobile Playbarn, a play bus that would be equipped with professionally installed soft play apparatus. The idea of having the play barn outside your front door for your child s birthday really appealed to us and we therefore hoped it would appeal to other parents too. We discussed it with many of our friends & family members who also have small children and we received very positive feedback. We also have very close friends in the Netherlands who have a beautiful young daughter with Down Syndrome and this encouraged us to develop an area suitable for disabled children & babies. (The development of this area is ongoing). Sourcing an older but reliable double-decker was our first challenge & a job for the boys! Then once we had our bus we then had to find a company to kit her out. We chose SPI Play in Wrexham who specialise in the installation of soft play apparatus. After 5 months of stripping & preparing the interior, design discussions, painting & finally the installation of the soft play, in June 2011 we had our bus ready to go. Specifically designed inside and out to be completely child friendly, the bus has been specially converted with soft play areas inside and lots of features to keep the kids entertained for hours. As the bus first pulls into your street you will see the look of amazement on your kids faces due to the bright, bold colours the bus has been designed in. The bus was designed to appeal to children and it most certainly does. A fantastic idea for a birthday party, instead of going to the hassle of booking a crowded play zone in your local area where your child is sharing the play area with children they don t know, why not have the play zone come to you? We have since attended Gala days, Shopping centre's, as well as children's party's. We also received a very welcome booking from Play Alloa who provide safe, stimulating, fun activities for children and young people with special needs. The feedback from them has been fantastic and extremely satisfying for us as a company.
The Mobile Play Barn Company offer time slots to suit your needs and we can liaise with you should our pre-bookable time slots not fit in with your plans. To view the time slots and dates available, please check out our online calendar. Available in 2 hour booking slots, the Mobile Play Barn covers the whole of Central Scotland, out with this area may be subject to a higher rate dependant on travelling time to take the bus to the location, but we are a friendly bunch and always looking to help out when we can, so please call us with your requirements and we will see what we can do for you. The Mobile Play Barn comes to your home, work, party or show location at a time convenient to you and stays put for a full two hours. We can park outside your home and the kids can have the time of their lives in the bus while the adults relax in the garden nearby, still allowing the children to be in sight. The playbus gives children a unique, exciting experience that they will remember and talk about for a very long time! E: fun@themobileplaybarncompany.co.uk T: W:

Salt and Light Celebrate 10th Anniversary Congratulations to Anne Wallace, staff and volunteers of the Salt and Light project which has reached its 10th Anniversary this year. Anne set up the Salt and Light Project 10 years ago, this project was set up to help Glasgow s homeless, drug addicts and prostitutes. Anne and her volunteers would go out in the evenings and hand out toiletries and cups of tea from the back of a car to people looking for some support. As soon as Anne would pull up people would come from all directions to see her and the volunteers, sometimes even speaking up to a 100 people a night. Anne used the back of a car until she was offered a bus, which she adapted and painted, it is this vehicle that you will see in the streets of Glasgow in the evenings. Some of the people who attended the bus are now volunteers with the project and are grateful for the support that Anne and her volunteers have given them earlier on in their life. Anne also has an office where women can pop in for some advice and support during the day. Because of all Anne s hard work and dedication to the project Anne won the Daily Record's Volunteer Hero Award in Salt and Light are celebrating their 10th Anniversary with a Fundraising Dinner on September 16th at Hampden Park.
