Rich with excitement and alive with cultural diversity, beauty and history, Flagstaff is home to amazing educational, recreational and scientific opportunities. Visitors from the world over are attracted to our clean mountain air and the West s most beautiful country, from the alpine forests of our San Francisco Peaks (12,633 feet/ 3,851 meters) to the rugged deserts of neighboring Native American nations. Grand Canyon National Park, Wupatki National Monument and Meteor Crater are all within easy driving distance, as are many more archaeological treasures and attractions. At 7,000 feet (2,135 meters) elevation, Flagstaff is located in the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world. However, ecosystems spanning piñonjuniper studded plateaus, high desert, green alpine forest and barren tundra can all be found within the Flagstaff area. Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and rest often. Layered clothing is a must, as are comfortable shoes, a sweater or fleece, a hat and sunglasses. April-August Mild, refreshing days and balmy evenings are perfect for outdoor fun. Bring shorts, light pants and rain gear. Expect afternoon showers during the July-August rainy season. September-October The perfect season to enjoy colorful fall foliage. Days are comfortably cool; evenings turn slightly chilly. Layered clothing is a must with a warm sweater, fleece or jacket for night. November-March Winter wonderland and snow-sports season with crisp days and cold nights. Heavy snow at times. (unpaved) in west Flagstaff thearb.org The Arboretum at Flagstaff is a 200- acre botanical garden and nature center focusing on the native plants and animals found in Northern Arizona. Grounds include a nature trail, greenhouses, meadow, wetland, picnic area and gift shop. The three-acre property includes numerous territorial-era buildings and a steam locomotive. With elevations ranging from 2,600 to 12,633 feet, the forest features diversity from desert cactus to alpine tundra and is home to a variety of wildlife. Respect and enjoy your national forests. Flagstaff Nordic Center Highway 180, mile marker 232; 15 miles northwest of downtown Flagstaff flagstaffnordiccenter.com Flagstaff Nordic Center offers more than 25 miles of groomed crosscountry trails and 10 miles of snowshoe trails through beautiful forests. The trails will entertain and challenge beginner and seasoned cross-county skiers alike. Rentals and lessons available. Located one mile from Crowley Pit snowplay area. During the day explore the Observatory s history and current research by joining guided tours. In the evening, view through a variety of telescopes and experience interactive live presentations in the mini-planetarium. 9 Museum of Northern Arizona 3101 N. Fort Valley Rd musnaz.org Now celebrating its 83rd year, MNA is one of the great regional museums of our world in one of Earth s most spectacular landscapes. The museum and its nine exhibit galleries evoke the very spirit of the Colorado Plateau and its richly diverse Native cultures, tribal lifeways, natural sciences, ecology and fine arts. Riordan Mansion State Historic Park 409 W. Riordan Rd azstateparks.com Completed in 1904 in the Arts and Crafts style of architecture, the historic mansion is expansive, with more than 40 rooms and 13,000 square feet of living area and servants quarters. A tour guide leads visitors through this richly furnished home, filled with original artifacts, Stickley furniture and many other personal possessions of the Riordan families. Also featured are a visitor center, a self-guided tour of the grounds and picnic tables. Reservations are recommended for the mansion tour. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument 12 miles north of Flagstaff via Highway nps.gov/sucr Born in a dramatic series of eruptions 900 years ago, Sunset Crater is still the youngest volcano on the Colorado Plateau. Walnut Canyon National Monument 10 miles east of downtown Flagstaff via I-40, Exit nps.gov/waca Walk among the cliff dwellings and pueblos where people lived only 800 years ago. Experience the dramatic geology, varied vegetation and wildlife that made their lives possible. Visitor Center exhibits explain their daily lives.the strenuous one-mile Island Trail descends into Walnut Canyon. The shorter Rim Trail offers overlooks and a pithouse display. Open daily. Wupatki National Monument 33 miles north of Flagstaff via Highway nps.gov/wupa Rock walls of 800-year-old pueblos dot a desert landscape once home to thousands of people. Visitor Center exhibits explain how they survived by farming, hunting and gathering, and trading. Short trails lead to Wupatki, Lomaki and other pueblos. 10 Regional Attractions Canyon de Chelly National Monument 3 miles east of Highway 191 on Route 7, Chinle, Arizona nps.gov/cach With its beautiful, steep-walled canyons and numerous Native American ruins nestled below towering cliffs, Canyon de Chelly National Monument offers visitors the chance to learn about Southwestern Native American history from the early Pueblo to the Navajos who still live in the area. Self-guided rim drives and one self-guided hike. Backcountry tours require a park service permit with an authorized Navajo guide. Open year-round. Closed on Christmas. Dead Horse Ranch State Park 675 Dead Horse Ranch Rd., Cottonwood, Arizona azstateparks.com Dead Horse Ranch is situated amidst an abundance of life along the Verde River. Its unique ecosystem, the cottonwood-willow riparian ecosystem, is one of less than 20 such riparian zones in the world. Camping facilities are available with more than 150 sites. The Verde River and the park s lagoons provide excellent fishing opportunities. Miles of developed trails provide opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use. Fort Verde was a primary base for General Crook s U.S. Army scouts and soldiers in the late 19th century. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area 691 Scenic View Dr., Page, Arizona nps.gov/glca The park lies in the midst of the nation s most rugged canyon country. Lake Powell, formed by one of the world s highest dams, stretches for 186 miles along the old Colorado River channel with a shoreline of 1,960 miles. Grand Canyon National Park 81 miles northwest of Flagstaff via Highways 180 and nps.gov/grca Often described as Earth s greatest geological showcase, the breathtaking ensemble of colorful rock layers, impressive buttes and shadowed side canyons sets Grand Canyon apart. Enjoy the views, hike a trail, observe the wildlife, watch a sunrise or sunset, or immerse yourself in almost two billion years of geology. South Rim is open year-round.
