From The Dispatchers Desk M odel railroading has sure changed a lot in the past few years. Gone are the Blue Box kits from Athearn and Atlas has recently purchased the line of freight car kits from Branchline with no indication they will be releasing them as kits in the future. Trying to find a freight car kit these days is becoming more difficult as manufacturers produce more Ready-To-Run freight cars. Accurail and Bowser are the only remaining mass producers of freight car kits I am aware of. All the other kits are craftsman type resin kits. Don t even try to look for a new locomotive kit. Bowser has stopped making their line of steam locomotive kits and is selling off the molds and remaining stock. The only locomotive kits I see any more are at used or old equipment tables at train shows. More and more structures are becoming available as built up models where all the modeler has to do is open the package and drop the building on their layout. There is still a good selection of structure kits out there and their detail for the most part is outstanding. However, the prices for these kits reflects the increased detail. The number of vendors producing craftsman structure kits has exploded in the past few years. This is partially due to the availability of inexpensive laser cutters on the secondary market. Another trend I have seen in the last two years is the increased availability of pre-weathered models. Companies are producing weathered models of vehicles, freight cars, locomotives and structures. The weathering patterns tend to have little variation for a family of products but the model railroader can populate their railroad with weathered models just by opening a box and placing the model on the layout. What has driven this change? As a group I believe we hobbyists have driven the increased level of detail and prototype fidelity we are enjoying today. This increased level of detail is reflected in the rising costs of our models. As for the increased number of Ready-To-Run and preweathered models being released I believe that is a trend in the hobby by many to do Wallet Modeling. For any number of reasons many modelers today are more interested in putting models on their layouts rather than taking the time to build them first. Let me be clear, this is not a problem but it is a choice being made by more modelers every month and the manufacturers are responding to the demand by shifting production from kits over PAGE 3 to pre-built models. The effect of this shift to pre-built and Ready- To-Run models will be homogeneous layouts. If modelers are no longer kit building, scratch building, or kit-bashing models then we are left with the variations available from the manufacturers. They tend to limit variation because each change will cost them additional money in terms of labor and material for each different model produced. This effect does concern me. If we, as a group, loose the ability or desire to scratch build or modify a model kit then how will we be able to put unique structures on our layouts like the grain and feed distributor pictured above? I enjoy visiting different layouts and seeing the variations. How boring will it become if we go to several layouts during a convention tour and see the same buildings painted the same way without any modifications? What kind of modeling are you doing? Ed & Ed

LOOSE SPIKES (Continued from page 2 Ken Cameron asks if anybody in the CNY division is using an MRC Prodigy DCC system. He needs to do some research for some clinics he s working on for next year. If you are an MRC Prodigy user, or know someone who is, contact Ken at: kcameron@staffleasing-peo.com Bill Bender writes: I am giving away all of my hard copies of MODEL RAILROADER magazine. My preference is that they all go together. I have the following issues: 1953 Oct, 1956 Feb, 1960 all, all, Feb, Apr, Aug, 1966 Dec, 1967 all, Apr, May, Sep, 1970 July, Jan, Feb, Apr, all except, Jul 74, Apr 76, Jul Dec 1979, all Bill is in Central Square (West Monroe), and can be reached at Bill states he has acquired the 75-year MR Collection on DVD and has had some issues loading them on his Windows machine. He tells me Kalmbach hasn t been especially helpful. If any one has had such an issue and worked it out, contact Bill. I m sure he d appreciate the assistance. I had a similar problem with my imac, and contacted Kalmbach s Customer Service center from the website. They sent me a fix for it, which allowed me to install the file and download all the issues to my Mac. I am now able to access all 75 years from in a fraction of the space my paper collection took up. I m hoping they will issue updates or make recent editions available on line, since I gave away my paper copies from I kept the 2011 paper copies when I moved. Now if RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN would only do the same. News from NMRA National: This year registration for Grand Rails 2012 will be handled in a new way. Instead of the large registration package inserted into NMRA Magazine, the full package can be downloaded from Those who prefer a printed piece can send their request, along with their name and address to: GR 2012 Registrar, 4165 Costa NE, Grand Rapids, MI There will also be a registration form and ad appearing in an upcoming issue of NMRA Magazine. Speaking of the convention, even though Grand Rails 2012 has over 200 clinic slots filled, they're still looking for more. If one of your members is interested in presenting, go to and click on the clinic application page. In addition, there's still some space left for modular layouts at the National Train Show. If some of your members would like to participate, have them visit the convention's website and click on the "Contact us" link and tell the Convention Committee what you'd like to bring. NMRA elections are coming up soon. The official ballot was prepared by the National Nominating Committee according to the procedures laid out in the Regulations and in the Executive Handbook (available at It will appear as an insert in the center of the February issue of NMRA Magazine, which will be mailed to all voting members. Ballots must be returned to NMRA headquarters, "Attention Ballot Committee," and must be postmarked by April 10, 2012 and received by April 15, Here are the job titles and candidates as they appear on the ballot. The names with asterisks were nominated by petition; all others were nominated by the Nominating Committee: President: Charles W. Getz, IV, HLM Vice President - Administration Howard Goodwin Clark Kooning, MMR Dave Thornton Vice President - Special Projects Bill Kaufman James "Lump" Lupfer At-Large North American Director Mike Brestel Miles Hale, MMR Eastern District Director John Roberts, MMR, HLM If you have any questions or comments about any of the above, please send them directly to a Director or Officer. You'll find those addresses at or in NMRA Magazine. PAGE 4

Call (315) to reserve directly with the hotel, or log on through the link found at If you call, be sure to say you want the National Model Railroad Association block. Don t wait. Call now. The hotel is already taking room reservations. Layouts! All scales and interests! As of 11/1/11, we have over 30 confirmed layouts open at various times from Thursday afternoon until Sunday evening! Lots of variety, and lots to learn and enjoy at every stop. Layouts on tour include: Brian Curry MMR, winner of multiple Baldwin Trophy awards, making changes...come see what s up on his N scale layout; Bill Brown MMR, building a fantastic HO layout in the basement of their new home, this time focusing on contemporary AND historic Colorado railroading. It s beautiful and it runs great. Mike Shanahan s: arguably the finest HO scale home layout in the area, and a must see ; Drew and Karel James Canada, Spokane and Pacific, magazine quality and operating! Dave Martini s CSX Northeast, a modern HO system on the Op-Sig trail; Dick Martini, whose CSX almost fills the basement with organized operations! Bernie Messenger, operating a largely-expanded, freelanced modern system; Len Amrhein, driven by John Allen s talents and vision for his own Wauroad and Glorre; Dick Lautenslager, whose Northern Central steamers are legendary: Swiss-watch like! Jim Heidt s Ogdensburg & Norwood, a 1948 operating Class 1 bridge line 400' plus; Martin and Brenda Collard s exceptional standard and narrow gauge modeling on the Borodino and Southern; Tom Scibetta s O scale empire, a master of selective compression! These are just some of the layouts: available, open and on tour...and more are coming. The layout tour book will be separately mailed in August to those who register and pay for the book to be sent to them. Past NER conventions in Syracuse are favorably remembered in part for the accuracy and detail of our layout tour book directions and this one will be no different. Also, as for the 2008 convention, we will have a Dispatcher s Desk, a staffed location at the hotel with a posted telephone number to be a EJ " number, if you will. By telephone, that staff member can help you with driving directions, assistance, answer questions, etc. Now, how can you NOT look forward to touring the layouts at EJ 12!? PAGE 5

Operations Special Interest Group (OP-SIG) We have worked hard to improve upon this growing-popularity attraction at NER conventions. As a result, here is the deal: CNY Division members are not eligible to register for OP-SIG. Obviously, owners of the OP-SIG layouts are exempt, but the rest of us locals can run another time. The OP-SIG throttles during this convention are for you to use. As of 11/1/11, EJ 12 has 86 slots confirmed for operation...and most, but not all are on Thursday afternoon and/or evening. There is no separate fee for the OP-SIG sessions, but the first come/first serve calculation of OP-SIG choice for those who want to participate is determined by NER convention registration number. So, be sure to register early and as soon as the form is available! Live Rail Clinics EJ 12 is developing a great fleet of quality clinicians and topics for your enjoyment and consideration, starting on Thursday afternoon and continuing through Saturday afternoon. All clinics will be presented twice. The specific clinic schedule and description will be in the convention handbook, and a summary of clinicians and subject clinic titles will be posted online at empirejunction.org as those details become more firm. Again, sign up to receive your updates. Modeling with the Masters (MWTM) We will have two separate MWTM sessions, one on Thursday evening from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and the other on Friday morning from 8:00 am until noon, led by MMRs Bill Brown and Brian Curry. As currently planned, these session subjects are not connected to each other, so registration for either one (or both) are options available to you. Either way, you can be assured of having a (1) GREAT time while (2) learning and refining your modeling skills. Empire Junction 12 MWTM is free, but is limited to the first 20 who register with John Campbell for each session, and the next 10 registrants for both will be held on stand-by. All 30 for each will receive instructions before convention to bring certain and specific modeling tools. Therefore, if some of the initial 20 for each do not show up Thursday and/or Friday at the start, some from the stand-by 10 will be called in...on literally 5 minutes notice. Making sure that we have 20 ready to go at the start requires us to have the independent MWTM registration to correspond early and maintain a data base. Remember, regular paid registration for convention, in advance is required. Contests - Model and Photo As usual, here s your chance to bring those models and photos for judging and NMRA AP point consideration. Besides the judged entries, we will have the Model Showcase just for display along with a short written description. EJ 12 will provide every participant in the Model Showcase with a framed certificate of participation to take home. Prototype Tours We love a convention that makes scheduling tough because there s too much to do! The details are subject to change but, besides the casual railfanning opportunities throughout central New York, we have two prototype plans for you, with thanks for your help with live and on-line polling of options: 1) Hanson Aggregates: This has been a particularly popular CNY Division destination lately...and, why not? This Jamesville industrial site is located literally just feet off of the former DL&W Binghamton/Syracuse line (now NYS&W), and has direct rail service providing limestone railroad roadbed ballast both far and wide. This tour is Friday, September 7 only, and limited in number to one tour-bus capacity. Besides the tour of the rail-oriented physical plant and equipment, as well as the other heavy equipment on site, we expect a demonstration of blasting a wall of aggregate material...so be prepared for noise and dust, but from a safe distance. The cost of the tour is projected to be $30.00 per person. 2) Finger Lakes Railway: This day-long tour is Saturday, September 8, only. Total number is limited to bus capacity. No self-driving allowed. This will be a different event from EJ 08, heading in different directions and enjoying new sites. Again, for the non-fglr properties, we remain on the bus ex- PAGE 6

cept for photo opportunities at designated areas. The 2008 experience was unanimously positive, particularly with the railroad s supplied tour guide who will host us again this time. Lunch is on your own. Again, register for information, and look for Ed Olszewski s update in February. The projected cost of the tour is $40.00 per person. Non-Rail Programs We are ABSOLUTELY convinced that a full and balanced convention program..for rail AND non-rail interests...is the rock-bottom foundation for a great NER convention experience. So, we are pleased to offer a full weekend package of activities for those interested, based upon your responses to our early live and on-line polling of options. Thanks for your help, we start with our tour packages: 1) Luncheon Cruise: This is the top survey response!! On Friday, join us for a luncheon cruise on beautiful Skaneateles Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. Our boat, the Judge Ben Wiles, departs from the dock in picturesque Village of Skaneateles, fully enclosed in case of inclement weather. After the cruise, visit the upscale village shops or near-by attractions. Travel to this site is on your own. Maps and directions will be provided. For more information about the cruise, log onto 2) Turning Stone Resort and Casino: Another top survey choice among non-rail participants. On Saturday, we head out to Verona and visit the Turning Stone complex, an enterprise of the Oneida Indian Nation. In addition to the on-site shopping, multiple selections of restaurants, and gaming, we are arranging for a side visit to the Oneida Nation s Cultural Center for a guided tour highlighting the history, culture and language of this local area native people...the only tribe among the ancient Iroquois confederation that was an ally to the American colonies during the American Revolution. First allies. Our in-hotel non-rail activities will fill out your long weekend with Thursday and Friday clinics which will be posted on our website and included on our notice as we get closer. AND...finally, the EJ 12 Spa Event! Hugely popular in 2008, we again will have at least two technicians to provide facials, hair styling, manicures, pedicures...the whole spa deal...at NO COST. In conclusion, there is no reason for our non-rails to stay home! Raffle The CNY Division hosts the weekend-long raffle of donated rail-oriented and non-rail interest items. Closer to convention, you can log onto to see photographs of donated items (with credit to their donors) as they come in. Also, at the end of convention when the winning tickets are drawn, we will have the winning numbers and photo of the item displayed on large screen to make it easier for everyone to know the results. The Banquet...er, the Saturday Night Carving Station Social Event Following the traditional social hour, our Saturday evening meal continues with a flexible arrangement of serving by carving stations. Again, as in EJ 08, this option was selected for two main reasons: (1) trying to keep the convention as economical and attractive as possible, and (2) allow for a more free form event with greater movement and flexibility. Sometimes at NER conventions when the banquet is over, attendees rush to the contest room only to find that the models are cleared out and end up grumbling that they missed out. Therefore, during our banquet, but following the presentation of contest and AP awards, we will open the side wall separating the banquet from the contest and Model Showcase room. Food and drink will not be allowed in the model area, but you will have a greater chance (during the social event ) to enjoy and inspect the displayed models at your leisure. Conclusion If you build it, he will come. Nice movie line, but also true! We in the Central New York Division have worked almost two years to present a fully enjoyable, and affordable, regional convention. Come join us in Syracuse on September 6-9, 2012, where tracks come together for Empire Junction 2012! See you then...but mark your 2012 calendar NOW! PAGE 7
