3 From The Freight Shed Bob Verkuyl, Superintendent the pageant that opened the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. In 1983 we made a three week trip to Deer Lodge, Montana with our to celebrate the centennial of the Northern Pacific. Over the years we developed restoration techniques and were employed by the California State Railroad Museum and Nevada State Railroad Museum, located in Carson City, Nevada. In 1980, I relocated to Carson City where I lived until During these years I worked at the museum and also as a freelance musician--i play French horn. The time I spent as a musician in Northern Nevada was the tail end of the era when huge stars of the 50s and 60s were still appearing on stage in casinos. I had the good fortune to play in bands that backed many stars, including Sammy Davis and Frank Sinatra, even Bob Hope. I m using my first From the Freight Shed column as an opportunity to introduce myself. My fascination with trains probably followed the same path as yours. My father was a model railroader and I got my first Lionel when I was four or five. At about ten I made the change to HO. So far pretty normal, but in 1968 I hired out with the Union Pacific as a switchman/brakeman. Later that year I was in an accident that ended my career with the UP, as well as any hope that the U.S. Army had of drafting me. I was designated 4-F. In 1970 the MGM movie studio had an enormous auction of all of their props, where a friend and I bought a Virginia and Truckee coach that had been built in 1869, and all modeling immediately went dormant. By 1973, with two more friends, we had acquired rolling stock from Paramount studios and Twentieth Century Fox, which included an 1888 American, built by Cooke. The four of us incorporated a business with the purpose of having the equipment available for filming and train rides. We named the company Short Line Enterprises or SLE. Here are a few of the SLE highlights: In 1976 our train was used on the reestablished Virginia and Truckee in Virginia City, Nevada. From 1977 to 1981 we found a home at the Sierra Railroad in Jamestown, California. In 1981 we were part of I left Short Line Enterprises in 1988 when we received the proverbial offer we couldn t refuse. The State of Nevada negotiated to purchase all of our Virginia and Truckee-related equipment. Two of the partners kept the company and established a site in Southern California for movie locations using twentieth century equipment. My last railroad job was with the Grand Canyon Railway, where I was a steam locomotive mechanic and hostler. About the time I turned fifty, it became clear that if I wished to retire I needed to find a job with better income, so I went to school and learned to drive a big truck. While I was driving I got back into model railroading and a couple of years ago began building my first model railroad. It s a typical western short line of 1925 with a branch to a mining district. In 2002 my wife was offered a job at then SUNYIT and being a driver it was easy to relocate to New York. A couple of years later I was introduced to Jim Heidt and through that connection was able become associated with the fine community of modelers in central New York. I ve been retired since Now with ample time and energy, I m looking forward to working with you and the board of directors, and representing the division in the Northeast region. PAGE 3

B. Family Membership. The spouse and minor children of any regular member may become family members upon request, whereupon they shall be entitled to all benefits of the Division except full voting privileges and inclusion on the stated mailing list. VI. Publications C. Mailing List. 1. The Division shall maintain a mailing list for Red markers that shall be revised once every six months, and Red Markers shall be mailed to all persons and organizations on the stated mailing list. 2. Any natural person who registers his or her name in attendance at a general meeting shall at no direct cost be included onto the stated mailing list. Upon failure to register attendance at general membership meetings for a consecutive period of six months, he or she will be dropped from the stated mailing list until he or she attends a general membership meeting or, in the alternative, makes a donation to the Division to offset the cost of Red Markers for continuation on the stated mailing list for a period of six months. 3. The stated mailing list shall also contain and Red Markers shall also be mailed to the names and addresses of persons as follows: current NER President, current NER Past President, current NER Vice-President, current NER Secretary, current NER NYS Director, current NER Office Manager, current editor of the NER Coupler, hobby shops within the Division, editors of other Division publications who trade their publications for issues of Red Markers or who otherwise make contributions, and other officials and interested persons of railroad or model railroad interest, organizations or businesses shall have no other rights and obligations that arise from Division membership or inclusion on the stated mailing list. Division By-Laws IV. Membership In order to properly execute the stated purpose of the Division, as prescribed by the Division Constitution, individuals who are not members of the NER or National Model Railroad Association, Inc., (hereafter NMRA) may be placed on the Division Mailing List and invited to Division meetings in accordance with the policy of the NMRA for the finite and restricted invitation to attend NMRA, regional, and/or divisional meetings and functions as non-members of the NMRA. Being on the Division Mailing List is, however, not the same as membership. By inviting people to our meetings, we hope to expose them to the fun, fellowship and education of the NMRA on our local level. Certain activities such as attending Division meetings after the permissible period for non-member attendance pursuant to NMRA policy, voting for and holding office, and participating in the contests and the NMRA s Achievement Program require current NMRA membership. 6 Printed paper interior for a grocery store By Martin Collard Photos by the author My Borodino & Southern RR, located in Borodino, NY, needed a 1948 version of the IGA which stood proudly on the corner of Route 174 and Route 41. I have a picture of the store as it looked in 1941 and figure it probably didn t change much by This scratch built building is placed in the middle of my layout peninsula and a fully detailed interior is not necessary, but a lighted photo interior would help make the scene appear a bit more realistic. I searched online for 1940s grocery store interior pictures and found a couple that would do the job. Moving the picture around behind the windows can help to crop and edit the photos. Picture installed Circa 1941 After a bit of cut and paste in Print Shop I ended up with what looked like the interior of an old grocery. You may have noticed the aisle pictures look the same. That s because they are, but once in the building it really doesn t matter. The picture is printed on regular copy paper and the base of the picture was glued to the store floor about ¾ back from the front edge. A piece of scrap wood was glued to the floor to hold the picture straight. Above: Printed Paper interior glued in place Right: Interior for the angled addition Continued on Page 7 PAGE 6

7 Printed Paper Interior for a Grocery Store, continued from page 4 The placement of the interior picture in this manner, rather than directly on the inside of the window frame, gives added depth to the appearance through the windows. The angled piece is to give you some interior for the addition on the side which is also viewed through the front windows. The tire display is a JL Innovative Design casting. Placement of the lamps The finished product A cardboard ceiling to become a light block from the first floor to the second was glued in place. I placed the 3mm Miniatronics Yeloglo LED lights about 1 ½ from the front of the building to back light the interior picture. I also printed and cut out a picture of stacked grocery items, for the front window display. The finished project gives you a nicely detailed interior with little effort and very little cost. If you want to add some front figures that works out well too. While I have used the printed interior method on a few of my layout structures with acceptable results, this is the first building where I have back lit the interior panel. On my other attempts the picture was placed from one front corner to the opposite front corner in a U shape and the light placed in front of the picture.the back lit picture seems to reduce glare in a photo, as you see below.
