3 MODEST SPRING MEET CONTEST ENTRY LIST FEATURES SOME MODELING GEMS TEXT & PHOTOS BY JOE BUX Al Kuhn took First Place in the Passenger Car category with 111 points, which also entitled him to the Monahan Award for Best-in-Show. Andy Wasowicz took First Place in the Freight Car Category with 97.5 points for his DRG&W Sn3 Box Car #3210. Steve Perry took First and Second Places respectively in the Structures Category with 98.5 points for his wood truss bridge and 97 points for his B&M crossing shanty. He also took first Place in the Diorama Category with 90 points for his grade crossing diorama. IN ADDITION Vincent Denardo entered a diorama entitled The Gorge, which was actually a module from one of the N scale operating layouts on display. His creation had nearly everything a top flight contest entry should have interesting and eye-catching subject matter well executed as a model. It was a lack of documentation, however, that played a major part in the entry's relatively low score of 56.5 (although Vincent is not a member of the NMRA, his entry, like the all those in an STD contest, was judged strictly according to NMRA standards). The STD encourages Vince and others to continue entering STD model contests, being careful to provide more background detail as to the materials and techniques used in the construction of a model. STD Director and Achievement Program Chairman, Mike Siegel, is available to advise members of the NMRA as to what detail and paperwork can help a model earn the score it deserves not only in any STD contest, but also toward one of the many Achievement Certificates available from the NMRA. Mike Siegel and John MacGowan deserve a well earned thank you for their vital help in judging the contest entries. SPRING
4 THE LIRR BUILDS A TURNOUT PART 2 TEXT & PHOTOS BY WALTER WOHLEKING The previous issue of the Cannon Ball showed a LIRR track crew using a Plasser WM-40/PK Switch and Panel Exchange System to construct the points, frog and both legs of a switch at the Greenlawn siding. After the completion of each subassembly, it was placed on a Plasser Switch Transport Car. Those cars, along with the PK machine riding on its WM-40 transport car, made up a train the Atlantic & Western transported to a siding just west of the Kings Park station. Our photo story resumes with the preparation of the roadbed to accept the new turnout. Next issue we ll conclude by showing the installation of the turnout, again using the using WM-40/PK combination, as well as the amazing Unimat laser-guided, track leveling machine. (1) Looking east, bulldozers have cleared away the old track, ties and ballast from the west end of the station. (2) Looking west from the end of the station platform. A dump truck supplies roadbed material from ballast piled in the station parking lot as a bulldozer waits to distribute it. (3) Looking west. Off in the distance the PK machine sits on its WM-40 carrier car, with one of the turnout subassemblies, waiting for a bulldozer to finish smoothing the ballast. (4) Looking east. With the initial coarse layer of ballast distributed, the roadbed is ready to accept new track extensions to the station platform tracks. (5) Suspended between a pair of bulldozers, a track segment is maneuvered into place at the end of one of the station tracks. CONCLUDED NEXT ISSUE (6) Looking west. With the preliminary smoothing of the roadbed complete, the WM-40 transport car crawls forward bearing a turnout subassembly and the PK machine that will lower it in place. 4 THE CANNON BALL
