OF NOTE Volume 45, Number 2 Summer 2015 RETHINKING THE SUNRISE TRAIL USING THE ARDUINO GREENPORT, 1940 BOOK REVIEW: ALL ABOARD IslandOps 2015 A chance to tryout the layout For the second year, Island Ops organized operating sessions on a dozen layouts from around the Division over a weekend in April. The operating sessions took place on layouts big and small, from Vince Lee s 28th Street Terminal layout to the Alleghany and Western Railroad belonging to the West Island Model Railroad Club. Registration filled up the operating slots quickly and ultimately, close to 45 modelers participated in the weekend. In addition to the operating sessions, five layouts hosts held open houses on the Sunday. Operations depended on the layout host. For the most part, operating sessions were relaxed as new operators learned the new geographies and operating schemes. For those attending the session at the West Island, the operating session gave way to dinner and discussion on how things went. Extraordinary scenery dominates on Vinny Pelletteri s Sn3 West Side Lumber Company set in the Shays still lumber along almost three scale miles of the narrow gauge line on Vinny s layout, from Tuolumne to Camp 45. Redesigning the Sunrise Trail Division By Steve Perry Big changes are coming to the Sunrise Trail Division, with the aim of making events more interesting for the membership. The planning committee has been meeting almost monthly since January to not only plan the fall convention, but to also take a hard look at how the Sunrise Trail Division can improve our meets and perhaps have some more events during the year. The fall convention this year will be held on Saturday, October 17 and will be a members and invited guests only event. We plan to move the venue to St. David s Lutheran Church in Massapequa Park. We made this change to reduce costs and to have the capability for running two clinics simultaneously. It will be different. Because St. David s has been a problem for the modular groups carrying their heavy modules down the stairs to the hall on the basement level, there won t be any public or modular layouts. While the modular groups won't be operating this time, we invite their members to attend. We are also inviting the members of all the model RR clubs in our area including the hi-rail clubs like Without the public and the modular layouts operating, the hall will be quieter so we can divide the hall and have another classroom. How will this convention differ from previous ones and how will it be the same? There will be no modular layouts It will be for members and invited guest only No banquet and keynote speaker There will a model contest, a photo contest and Achievement Program judging Contest winners will be announced after 3 PM. The certificates will as usual be mailed later There will be a White Elephant Table New this year there will be a Modelers Showcase for those who want to display their handiwork, or works in progress, but not Continued on page 4

Throughout the years we have always looked to find another scenic railroad to ride, and to revisit some that we enjoyed in the past. Steam or diesel, it really does not make a difference to me, as I enjoy the feeling that I get as the open-window coach rolls and rocks along with the sound of the rail joint clicks. After many years ago of taking the children on these adventures, I now have started to take some railroad photos. Some of these photos are good enough to enter into convention photo contests and I hang up the winners for display. During the spring, at Rutland Railroad Historical Society conventions that are held at a town along the historic Rutland Railway route, we get out to investigate the old route and freight sidings. For me, the summertime is when Janet and I get out to travel, being alert for interesting railroad opportunities for picture taking by both of us. In the Fall I attend the Northeastern Region conventions that are held somewhere from central New York state to as far east as New Brunswick, Canada. All of these out-ofthe-home activities continue to give me ideas for layout building and model building. Tell me about your summer rail adventures. The weekend affords the chance to try out other people s layouts, learn their operating schemes, and just plain have a good time running trains. It s also a good way to get an idea of how other modelers in our area approach the hobby. Layout visits are good; operating on a layout is even better. Looking at a layout allows us to see the workmanship, the technique, and the details. But picking up a throttle takes us even further, to see how the tracks and the scenery all come together to produce a working railroad. It also helps me to understand the various choices that are made to come to terms with the compromises that we are invariably forced to make. One thing that I find is most modelers are proud of their layouts and are very happy to share their layouts. And contrary to reading all the magazines, there is very little orthodoxy about strict prototype rules. Rather, most seem to want a more relaxed form of operation without the pressure of having to complete jobs on a strict timetable. That s not to say that anything goes. Some hosts demand no more than to deliver loads to anywhere in an industry. Others have specific spots. There are often house rules about which train is superior or how a ferry should be unloaded. What I takeaway from all of this are ideas. My layout has always been a one man operation. I started making car cards in the past, but I ve always gotten distracted along the way. And now I realize that the siding situation needs to be revisited. A forum for new ideas is also behind the effort to refocus the Division. The big idea is to make it more interesting for all of us who are, or who are about to become, engaged in the hobby. And as those ideas come through, don t forget to share through the Cannon Ball. 3 Greenport: The Original LIRR Terminal The short history of the first train to Greenport was prepared as part of the 130th anniversary celebration of the Long Island Railroads arrival at Greenport. The original artwork and handout was created by Vincent Quatroche, a Member of the Sunrise Trail Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society of Greenport. The schematic of the Greenport Railroad yard, drawn by Robert M. Emery, was printed on the back of the narrative. This handout was given to me by a friend and long time resident of Southold who had attended the original program. Last winter, when I attended the Sunrise Trail Division meeting at the library, I had a discussion with one of our members asking me if I had any LIRR plans of the yards. I have had this for close to thirty years but could not locate it. I thought some members would enjoy the information. James Soberman A Short History of the First Train To Greenport Story and Artwork by Vincent Quatroche From the collection of Jamie Soberman The purpose of the Long Island Railroad coming to Greenport was to provide a fast service to Boston. It was decided that this was a more practical route than the New England Long Island Sound shore line, which was a maze of rivers, waterways, and Bays, which would be difficult to build a railroad over. The Long Island Railroad was incorporated in the summer of 1834 and in the summer of 1834, was well on its way to Greenport, having moved east beyond Central Islip. Problems arose as to where the railroad would terminate on the North Fork of Eastern Long Island. Interested parties wanted Jamesport to be the last stop. Others wanted Goldsmith s Inlet and Pipe s Neck near Greenport. The present site of Greenport was decided upon and in June of 1844 one of the Long Island Railroad s early steam engines, the Post Boy, a Baldwin engine, brought a construction crew to Tuckers Lane in Southhold to start work on the last segment of track to Greenport. East end of train on the 175th anniversary special of the railroad s service to Greenport. There exists a conflict of dates as to whether the first train arrived in Greenport on the 25th or27th of July Another interesting early newspaper account states a large engine with a flatcar and coach brought Long Island Railroad President George B. Fiske and Vice-President James Brooks and other officials to Horton s Lane, Southhold on Saturday July 15, (The last stretch of track was still not laid.) They rode from there to Greenport in carriages to await the official opening on July 25th, in which three Continued on page 6 SUMMER

Rethinking the Sunrise Trail Designing New Events to Engage the Modeler Continued from page 1 have it judged. New this year will be a second set of clinics Sandwiches and refreshments will be served in the kitchen There will be a Chinese Auction with the drawing held after 3 PM. Checking out other meets: Road trip for research The gang gets lunch in Collinsville Ray Muntz showed some of his models. 4 As we re looking at how to structure our upcoming event, Rick Mazzola and I drove up to Collinsville, CT, in May to take a look at the Railroad Prototype Modelers Meet. Neither of us had ever attended one of these meets and we were curious to see what one was like. There has been some discussion at recent board meetings about hosting one here so the timing was perfect for a visit. We were booked into the Torrington Days Inn just 20 minutes from Collinsville. Upon exiting the motel in search of a place to eat, we met two fellow model railroaders: Jeff (who owns Mo- Track Models in Virginia, and John from Newburg NY, who is an- LIRR engineer on the Port Jefferson branch. The clinics I attended were for the most part well organized and well presented. Two that stand out were: Using smart phone speakers with DCC sound decoders and painting signs on buildings. Since they are quite small, have a wide frequency response, have an enclosure, and are inexpensive, they are perfect for tight space installations. Three sound equipped diesel locomotives were demoed: One had a conventional speaker, the other two with iphone and Galaxy speakers. The sounds from the locomotives with the smart phone speakers were very impressive. They are often much cheaper than the cost of a conventional speaker and enclosure, and are readily available on EBay. I found a clinic on Letterbashing quite interesting. In it, Bill Gill from the Rensselear Poly Model RR Club, showed This is the proposed convention schedule for this year. Since we do not need two hours to setup the modules, we will begin setup as usual at 8 AM and the convention doors will open at 9 instead of 10 AM. White Elephant Table sales and clinics will begin at 10 and end at 3 PM. Tear down and clean up will start at 4 PM. The preliminary survey results are gratifying in that nearly 20 percent of the Division s membership responded. Rick will be producing a detailed analysis in the next week or so. Some of the indications of what the members want are: More clinics at the conventions and meets Interest in the achievement program Interest in modeling and scratch building in particular A desire for more events. We have eight time slots for clinics that I need to fill. Please contact me with your plans for a clinic or two that you can present in November. I also need people who will help setting up and tearing down and to relieve those manning the WET, contest table, and kitchen so they can have a break or attend a clinic. Bring your models and photos either for the contest, A.P. judging, or the model showcase. Your friends want to see them. Periodically check the STDiv website (www. sunrisetraildiv.com) how to create signs on buildings with a hand painted look, using two public domain software packages GIMP and Inkscape. There were three clinics operating simultaneously in each of the five time slots plus a participation clinic each day. Each day ended at 5 PM with a drawing for the raffle prizes. There were a lot of nice items awarded. Not all of the clinics were strictly about a particular prototype. Many concerned various modeling aspects, e.g., scratch building, weathering techniques, realistic scenery, and decaling as well as DCC. It was a mix typically seen at NER conventions. One large room held the model displays which ranged from individual pieces of rolling stock to dioramas. One somewhat amusing diorama (that apparently was based on fact) depicted an incident where a Rutland steam locomotive crashed through the back wall of the Bellows Falls roundhouse. The models were well done no obvious misaligned parts or glue spots. Rick noted that many of the models were not weathered. One wonders why. Your scribe set out his two pulpwood cars on a mirrored stand along with one of his SP woodchip cars. Display boards showing how the cars were built accompanied the models. The vendors were in another large room and an adjoining smaller one. It was always busy. Other Division members or supporters seen at the meet were Ray Muntz, Dennis DeAngles, Joe Bux and John McClusky. The format of an RPM meet (at least this one) parallels that of an NER convention with the exception of the model contest, AP judging and the awards banquet. Steve Perry THE CANNON BALL

The Arduino A Microprocessor with Unlimited Modeling Uses By Dave Metal In the winter of 2012 I discovered the world of the Arduino UNO microprocessor while I was looking at stuff in a Radio Shack store. I noticed a fully built microprocessor that sold for less than $ This is a lot less than the cost of the BASIC STAMP that I have been using and it looked like it was more powerful. I bought the book Programming Arduino Getting Started with Sketches by Simon Monk for $15.00 and did some reading. This was a very helpful book, and well worth the cost. I did some research on the Internet and I found a dealer who had Arduino UNOs for less than $19.00 each ( The whole card is already built and tested and it comes with a program (they call it a sketch) already loaded. The only other things you need to get started are a computer connected to the internet and a USB 2.0 cable that has a type A male plug on one end and a type B male connector on the other end ($0.99). Once you have the Arduino UNO card and the USB cable, set aside about thirty minutes and visit their site on the Internet at There are six sections to this site. You should start with the getting started section and learn what they have to say about themselves. Then go to the learning section and look at the list of links to projects. This has lots of code ideas that are examples of how to use the UNO. Be sure to check out the reference section this provides links to the documentation for the function library and the version of the C language that is used. I printed copies of the examples and put them in a loose-leaf book so I would have a quick reference for the language. Look at the Arduino.cc/blog to see what the team members are posting about the Arduino. The playground and the forum are also places to look to get more help from other users. It will take about thirty minutes to down load the Arduino software. Go to and follow the directions to download the latest version for your computer. For a Windows system download, click on your operating system and save the file (it will be placed in the windows download directory as a zip file). Make a new folder and name the folder the version of Arduino you are downloading. Click the extract button and wait. This will take a while as there are lots of files to unzip, but when it is done, you are ready to begin using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The final step is to create a short cut on your desk top for easy access to the program. Open the IDE by double clicking on the shortcut. The Arduino wait panel will appear, and after the IDE is loaded, it will appear on your screen. The left end of the top line of the screen will have the name of the sketch and the Arduino version number and on the right end of the line you will have the -, square and X that appear on all windows screens. The next line down has five dropdown menus; they are File, Edit, Sketch, Tools and Help. Clicking on one of them will expand them down. The third line down has graphics for the IDE. Starting from the left end of the line, they are: - A check mark, used to verify that your sketch (code) could be compiled. If there are errors they will be displayed at the bottom of the panel in the green and black areas. -A right arrow, used after the sketch has been verified to be correct, it will compile and load the sketch into the memory of the UNO card when the card is connected to the computer with a USB cable. Progress is shown in the bottom green panel area as compiling, then uploading and finally upload complete. -A page, click here to start a new blank sketch. -An up arrow, click here to open a sketch that has been saved. -A down arrow, click here to save a sketch. -At the far right corner is the Serial Monitor button. Click here to open communications with the serial monitor. The Arduino UNO card comes with a sketch loaded onto it that you can use to check the operation of the card you have. Connect the USB cable to the computer and the card, the power LED will light and the LED near pin 13 will blink on and off each second. The sketch that is loaded onto the board when it is built is listed below. For practice, click on the page icon to get a new blank sketch, then put the cursor in the white area of the sketch editor and click the mouse. Type the sketch below into the editor, and when you are done, click the check icon to verify your sketch. You will get a progress report in the green bar as the verification takes place. If you have typed the sketch exactly as shown, you will get a done compiling message. Otherwise your typing errors will be shown in the black bar and the first error will be highlighted. When the sketch is verified to be correct, you can save it to the computer by clicking /*MY_BLINK */ Int led = 13; void setup() { pinmode(led, OUTPUT); //variables and constants //initialize pin 13 as an output { void loop() { digitalwrite(led, HIGH); //make pin 13 high turn LED on delay(2000); //wait 2 seconds digitalwrite(led, LOW); //make pin 13 low turn LED off delay(2000); //wait 2 seconds } The BLINK Program File > Save as and give it a name MY_BLINK and save it. Writing a sketch can be pretty simple once you get comfortable with the code requirements. The sketch can be divided into three main parts; The sketch can be divided into three main parts: Structure - this is where you declare all of the variables and constants used in the sketch. Setup - this is read once on startup. You enter pin assignments here. Loop this is where all the action takes place, the loop is run over To upload the sketch to the UNO board connect the USB cable to the board and the computer. The power on LED on the board will be lighted; SUMMER

Greenport Continued from page 3 trains arrived with three cars each. As the Railroad accepts the 27th as the official date of the first train to Greenport, this is the date commemorated. A grand celebration was held on that date that was remembered long afterwards. Four tables one hundred feet long were set up and dinner was served by caterer William Thornhill to the railroad officials. Mayor Sprage of Brooklyn and ex-mayor Talmage and local officials attended. The food had been brought in from Brooklyn along with ten crates of champagne, a cask of brandy and other beverages. The celebration was a riotous success. At the end of the day many of the excursionists were put aboard the coaches in advanced stages of inebriation. Scheduled service began the next day with a train arriving and a train leaving. The fare was $2.25. The Boston Train made stops at Farmingdale and St. Georges Manor (Manorville), arriving at Greenport before noon, the passengers dined aboard the steamer New Haven on their way to catch their train to Boston. The entire trip from Brooklyn to Boston was a matter of nine hours. Two early engineers that drove the Boston Train were Abe Ayers and Mr. Bowers. The engines themselves had names to give them identity, the Fiske, Brooks, Boston, Townsend and Jacob Little. On the very first trip to Greenport, four of Seth Raynor s cows were killed at Manorville. By 1850 the impossible had been accomplished. The rail line from New York to Boston along the Long Island sound shore had been built. Service via Greenport came to an end for all practical purposes. The last steam run from Greenport was June 6, The last RPO from Greenport was April 23, March 1845 Schedule For The Boston Daily Land route over the Long Island Railroad, crossing the Greenport ferry in the Sound steamers in 2hours and 10 minutes and arriving in Boston in nine hours by daylight. Splendid cars leave South Ferry at 7:00 A.M. New York side, and 71/2 o clock, Brooklyn Mondays, Wednesday and Friday, via Norwich. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, via Stonington. Brooklyn passengers, on leaving Boston, will direct their baggage to be placed in the Brooklyn crates. Getting Started with an Arduino Rockville Centre Model Railroaders Club layout open house every Saturday from 1:00PM 6:00PM, 200 Sunrise Hwy (basement), Rockville Centre rcvmr.org, Continued from the previous page Click on the tools menu and select the serial port then click on the check box for the port. If more than one port is shown close the tools, serial port item and unplug the USB cable and see which port has gone missing. Then plug the USB cable back in and select that port. Click on the upload button and watch the TX/RX LED s on the UNO board. They should blink rapidly for a few moments indicating that the computer and the UNO board are talking to each other. Look at the pin 13 LED it should be blinking on and off every two seconds if it is you have programmed the UNO board correctly. Now lets look at what the program contains. This first part is the structure section this is read once /* -----*/ - is a multi line comment. Int led = 13; - tells the compiler where it sees led it means pin 13. The second part is the setup section this runs once Void setup() { - indicates the start of the code in setup pinmode(led, OUTPUT); - says the led pin is an output (note the caps) } indicates the end of the code in setup The third part is the loop section this runs until the power is removed { - indicates the start of the code in loop digitalwrite(led, HIGH); - writes a high to pin 13 (note the cap in Write and HIGH) delay(2000); - stops the program for 2 seconds to keep the LED on. Notice there are 1000 units in a second so very short delays are possible as well as long ones. The only problem with this type of delay is the code is stopped for the duration and if you are monitoring inputs you could miss a short pulse. There is another way to create delays that do not stop the program. digitalwrite(led, LOW); - writes a low to pin 13 (note the caps in Write and LOW delay(2000); - stops the program for 2 seconds to keep the LED off } indicates the end of the code in loop goes back to the start of code and runs again until power is removed. One tip I have when you write a sketch is to type in comments for what you want it to do in each section. Then write the code to satisfy the comment requirements and test each section before starting the next one. If you have any questions, my address is dmetal@juno.com. Tell me what you are doing and what is not happening, and I will try to point you in the right direction. If you want more information on the Arduino, let me know and I will produce an additional article. 6 THE CANNON BALL

Book Review: ALL ABOARD The Complete North American Train Travel Guide Jim Loomis By Steve Perry My wife, Jeanne, found this book at our local library. I sort of turned up my nose when she presented it to me, thinking it was just another tourist railroad guide. I agreed, however, to look it over at home. After reading a few selected chapters, I realized how wrong I was and read it cover to cover. Loomis is a frequent writer about train travel for the Sunday newspaper travel supplements; He has ridden most of the Amtrak trains and logged thousands of miles on the US trains and VIA Rail. He is also the vice chairman of the board of directors of the National Association of Railroad Passengers. The book opens with Loomis personal history of his love for railroads and R.R. travel and presents a compelling case for opting for the slower train vs flying. He gives us a brief history of railroads from the earliest days through the troubled years for American railroads following WW II. He then describes how Amtrak was created to rescue railroad passenger service. The 402 page book has eighteen chapters and five appendices. The various chapters describe how to plan and pack for a rail trip, and what life onboard is like. Other chapters are devoted to the passenger equipment Amtrak uses in the eastern and western halves of the US, the accommodations one can expect, a description of most of the Amtrak routes, and nine suggested US and Canadian itineraries. In a separate chapter, Loomis describes the history and routes of The Copper Canyon and the Tequila Express in Mexico along with other interesting and useful details. While the Copper Canyon route is for passenger travel, the Tequila Express is an excursion train. The chapter that particularly held my interest was Loomis Top Ten Picks of US and Canadian railroad stations. In it, he describes each station s history, architecture, and what one will find in them today. Each listing includes what can be seen in each station s neighborhood if you have a layover. He notes too, how many of these narrowly missed the wrecking ball. The main part of the book wraps up with a discussion on the future of railroads and how they are more efficient than competing modes of transportation. Loomis is an advocate of high speed rail service and explains how they are greener and cheaper to build than new highways. He also briefly discusses maglev (magnetic levitation) and its advantages for high speed rail. The variety and depth of information make this book a comprehensive, useful and enjoyable read. If you are thinking of or currently planning a rail trip, do consider this book for a reference.
