And not a moment too soon. Many of us can remember when four, and perhaps five, HO scale model railroad clubs welcomed the public during the holiday season. The demise of the Montauk Valley model railroad located in Williston Park and the trailer-based Smithtown Model Railroad Club a dozen or so years ago left us with the Rockville Centre Model Railroad Club, the Long Island Model Railroad Engineers (LIMRRE) in Medford, and West Island, which left its Farmingdale facility sometime after its prior holiday open house in 2006 and relocated to Hicksville. We are fortunate to have these three clubs in our area, and the fact that they all successfully addressed issues related to their facilities and survived, while the other two area clubs did not, is a testament to their memberships. Earlier in the decade just past, Rockville Centre had to discontinue open houses while it remodeled its facilities to meet changing regulations related to public access for such events. But they persevered and again began holding holiday open houses in December of The last open house the Long Island Model Railroad Engineers held before it had to vacate its facility in Farmingville took place the weekend of September in Five years later they had their first holiday open house in a new Medford facility, showing off their layout under construction. Now West Island is the latest model railroading Phoenix to rise again from the ashes of its past. All of these clubs deserve a visit, not only for the enjoyment they provide, but for what a model railroader can learn from them. But just as LIMRRE offered a unique experience when it first made its new, far from finished layout available to the public in 2005, this holiday season offers West Island a turn to provide an exceptional and not to be missed model railroading opportunity. What you ll see is scenery some finished, but most just begun or in process. Consequently, you ll be able to examine trackwork without scenic distractions. Similarly, the extensive benchwork, some of it double-decked, is more open for inspection than will be the case later on. And the electrics oh my! Along one wall across an aisle from the layout proper are a slew of open-front compartments or large cubbies painted white, each holding what appears to be a North Coast Engineering (NCE) Power Pro booster for the layout s digital command control system, and each with its power supply (transformer) encased in an aluminum box on a shelf beneath. Each booster probably feeds an electrical block in the layout, so that a short circuit or other electrical problem in one area won t affect another. Gone, or at least minimized, is crawling around under the benchwork to find and repair recalcitrant circuitry. You ve guessed it, good readers, it s Layouts 101 all the latest techniques and approaches to layout construction you ve read about and seen in magazines, but up close, real and simply better than any picture or printed word. But if you think you ll be bored with all the instructional stuff, there will be trains running some or most of them pretty long. That s because the first thing club members did after getting up the necessary benchwork was construct a double track mainline almost 11 scale miles long. It s 650 feet of what looks like code 83 or in some places code 70 rail. They ve got 5,600 square feet of area to work with (that s equivalent to a room about 75 feet square) and they ve made the most of it. West Island has always welcomed open houses as a serious revenue producer for the club, and many people, particularly non-modelers, want to see trains moving. But a railroad modeler will take more than a passing interest in the layout s staging, which is also in place So, please use what opportunities that might present themselves to see West Island in this, its early stages. And bring something to take notes. Then go home and apply what you ve learned. Finally, meet me at the Rockville Centre Model Railroaders and Long Island Model Railroad Engineers open houses to see a couple of top flight, more finished products. You can bring your notebook there, also, because there is always something to learn. Now where could I have put my NCE Command Station, its Power Booster, the transformer and all that wood and white paint? I ve got plans for them. 2

I did a photo chase of the convention passenger extra down to New Haven, VT. I did two layout tours on Friday night and following the NER annual meeting. Ed Neale Howard Dwyer received first place in the Model Color Print category Now that we are home from our adventure on the High Seas I can again pursue my railroading career as with this submission of three photos taken doing the NER Burlington Convention dinner. Sunrise Trail Division members present for the weekend were: Steve Perry, Ed Neale- Howard Dwyer, and Rick Mazzola. I attended a few clinics, [all were] very good too. 10 BUILD YOUR OWN SEARCH LIGHT SIGNALS David Metal Search light signals can be made for a fraction of the cost of commercially built units for your layout. These instructions are for an HO scale signal assembly but you can change the dimensions for your scale. Using low cost materials a very believable searchlight signal can be assembled with these simple parts. Parts required: #10 S.A.E. steel-zinc washers T-1 size bi-color LED (red/green with two leads) 7/32" O.D. brass tubing 5/32" O.D. brass tubing 1/8" O.D. brass tubing #36 gauge telephone wire.080" styrene plastic.020" styrene plastic Walther s signal ladder stock Tenax-7R styrene glue Purple super glue 180 ohm, 1/4-watt resistors Following these instructions you will build the signal base cabinet, then the signal head and finally add the details to complete the signal assembly. These procedures are suitable for building the signals in small batches so that after you build the first signal assembly you can use it for a sample and build large groups of the sub assemblies. Build the signal base by cutting 6 by 8 piece of styrene. Then cut, stack and cement 4'x6' pieces of styrene until they are 6' high. Finish this stack with one 3' square piece of.080" styrene that is beveled on all four edges. Sand or otherwise smooth the sides of the stack of styrene before gluing it to the base. Cement the completed stack to the base, be sure to center the stack on the base. Cut a door from a piece of.020" styrene 4'x5' and glue it to the side of the signal base that will be facing away from the track. Add small pieces of styrene for hinges, and a piece of.015" brass wire for a door latch. Mark the center of the stack and using a #22 drill with the drill motor running slowly so no heat is created, drill a hole through the entire stack from top to bottom. Install the 1/8 brass tube about a 1\4 inside the 5/32" brass tube and solder them together. Then cut the 1/8 tube to 20' long from the solder joint. After the 5/32 tube is inserted thru the base stack it can be cut to a length that will allow it to fit through the base stack and protrude out the bottom of the stack far enough to pass thru your bench work. After this is done, install the tubing into the base so that just a small amount of the larger tube shows above the styrene base, making it look like a base ring for the mast. After this is properly positioned, super glue the brass tubing to the base. You can fabricate or buy a small styrene point to add to the top of the 20'mast and super glue it in place. Build the signal head by cutting a piece of 7/32" brass tubing at an angle of 30 to 45 degrees, for the sun shield, and cut the tubing about 1/4" long. Then fit the square-cut end of the tube into the center of the #10 washer so it is flush and super glue them together. Install the LED into the tubing from the rear. You may need to file the circumference of the LED down slightly so that it fits into the tubing. Super-glue everything together from the back side of the signal head be very careful not to get glue on the front of the LED. Decide where you want to mount your signal head(s) on the mast and mark the spot, check your prototype railroad. Then using a round file cut a notch in the back side of the mast large enough for the LED wires to go into the mast. Then use superglue to install the signal head(s) to the front of the mast. Connect a different color (Continued on page 11) 10

11 (Continued from page 10) wire wrap wire to each of the two LED wires by wrapping the leads around the LED leads and carefully soldering each lead. Cut off the excess lead and wire wrap wire close to the LED body. Install the wire wrap wires into the notch and down the mast to the base. In series with one of the two wires coming from a signal head add a 180 ohm current limiting resistor for use with 5 volt TTL signal logic. If you are using 12 volt logic, substitute a 510 ohm current limiting resistor. To complete the signal assembly, install the Walther s signal bridge ladder stock to the back side of the signal mast using super glue. Many, but not all, masts have a letter "A" or number board attached to the mast, this can be cut from styrene, a decal attached and then super glued to the mast to complete the signal assembly. The signal head is painted flat black and the mast, base cabinet assembly are painted silver to finish your new searchlight signal. Be very careful no to get paint on the face of the LED. Be sure you completely cover the back of the LED so light does not show. You will need a circuit that reverses the voltage polarity to have the signal display red or green. If you want to be able to display yellow as well, the circuit needs to be able to supply a rapidly reversing voltage check the internet for circuits that can do this. The completed signal assembly is slightly large for exact HO scale, but it is close enough that you won't notice it, because the other proportions are correct. You total cost for each of the signals should be less than five dollars instead of the twenty dollars or more for prefabricated signals.
