1 Berks County Bicycle Club FOUNDED 197 JUNE 2016 Volume 4 Issue 6 The President s Spin Will spring ever get here? And what is up with rainy weather every Tuesday night? I feel like I m in Seattle. Well hopefully by the time you get this newsletter the weather will have officially turned over and we get warm morning rides and a few sunny weekdays. If you would like a BCBC jersey, check with me because I may have the size you need. They are $55. MEMBER OF BAC, LAB, SRGA, RAILS-TO-TRAILS CONSERVANCY BCBC club clothing. I will also be placing an order for club clothing. You can get tech shirts, tee shirts, hoodies, long or short sleeve and sweatshirts. Keep in mind when ordering the tech shirts that the short sleeve shirts are cut a bit on the bigger side. So ladies especially, if you normally wear a small, you ll want to go with an X-small. The prices range from $6 for a short sleeve tech shirt to $1 for hoodies. The other shirts are somewhere in between. It s a great deal as you re pretty much paying just over cost for the shirt, we re taking care of the printing. The color options are; grey, white and red. See the clothing in the newsletter. The order deadline is June 6 th. We finished 2015 with 200 members. Right now we re at 182 with 22 new members already this year which is awesome. That means either a few of you have had stopped riding and don t plan to come back or you re just waiting for us to start begging or shaming you Again, if you are coming out for the clubs rides on a regular basis, please don t be a rider with alligator arms, pay your 20 bucks and be legit. The others will appreciate it. Plus, you get a free pair of BCBC socks. One weasel actually got two pairs and I know who you are. You can either register online or by mail. Just a reminder that our club Facebook page is berks bicycle so be sure to join the group page and keep up with all the weekly happenings in the club. Ride talk: When in a group, don t just change lanes like you re riding solo. Recently, a few close calls occurred that were mentioned to me and I feel the same about this problem. One occurrence actually became a brief, spirited conversation. I ll remind everyone that when you are riding in a group, please make sure you re totally clear before changing lanes. It just takes a small overlap of the front wheel and a rider can go down. This seems to especially happen on the small humps because someone in front of you will slow down and then riders want to quickly get around them. Just be aware of what s going on around or coming up next to you. The BCBC vs Pagoda Pacers Running Club softball game is set for Sunday, June 26 th. Only, it s no longer a softball game. The Pacers got wind of the fact that our team had been training regularly at the Fightin Phils complex so they opted to instead play kickball. Well, at least no one will lose any teeth getting hit by a ball. But in the last kickball game I did a few years ago, walking the next three days was not easy. So anyhow, if you want to join in on the game, let me know. (Continued on Page )

3 The club picnic is coming up on Saturday, June 18 th at Laurel Run Park along River Rd. The food starts at 2pm. We will have a brief club meeting, maybe 15 minutes, at pm. The club will be providing fried and BBQ chicken, along with some wine, beer and soda. It s great if you bring a covered dish or dessert. Please Ann Rollman with your RSVP. Ann s address is grollman@ptd.net. Also please let her know how many will be attending with you. The picnic is free for members and $10 for guests. As of right now we have 4 people coming to the picnic and Ann is stressing out. So please, help Gary out and RSVP right now so he can have his happy, chillaxed wife back. Speaking of Ann Rollman, Jackie Shirey, after 8 years of faithfully serving the club as the membership coordinator and then secretary has called it a career. She s taking her pension and riding into the sunset. At the May meeting, she announced her intention to resign as soon as a replacement could be found. Well, after all the tears finally stopped flowing and sobs subsided, Ann leaped in the air and pronounced that she would do it. Although we were taken aback by her explosive enthusiasm, the officers with a leery eye and heavy hands, voted her in as the new club secretary to fulfill Jackie s term. Thank you very much for your years of dedication Jackie. The next meeting will be at the club picnic on Saturday, June 18 th at pm. How exciting, anyone going to the picnic will get to see how much fun the meetings are. However, if you want to purposely avoid this club meeting at all cost, then simply show up to the picnic fashionably late after say :20 and you ll be safe But the food might be cold. It s a coin flip really. When you re passing another rider coming at you, do you give a quick wave, nod or say hello? Or are you one of those that are just too darn cool and amazing to offer a greeting or acknowledgement? When a new rider shows up to a club ride, do you introduce yourself or at least say hello, or are you one of those that can t be bothered with a newbie. If guys on Harleys can do it, then those on a Cannondale or Trek should be able to handle it too. Our common bond is cycling so help make new riders feel welcome and out on the road, don t be a Moe, say hello. Ride safe Butch Page Tires & Tubes Nice weather and serious riding is just around the corner. Did your tires survive the debris on the roads this winter, or did your bike just hang in the garage and now the tires brittle and cracked. Now is the time to check. The club still has some tires and tubes that you can purchase. They ll be available at the banquet, but to be sure you don t miss this opportunity, contact Gary Rollman to put them on reserve prior to the banquet. Availability and pricing (same price as last year!): Continental Gatorskin 700 x 25 $5.00 ea Continental Gransport 700 x 2 $25.00 ea Tubes 48 mm stem $ 4.00 ea 4 for $15.00
