7 Hello & Welcome to Scituate Scituate offers its residents and visitors a spectacular assortment of local events and attractions. Truly a destination for anyone looking for award winning restaurants, artisan shops, golfing, boating or just relaxing on the beach. Known as the Irish Riviera, this town has it all! Start in North Scituate and you will find a quaint village with easy access to the Boston Commuter Rail. Follow the bike paths along Gannett Road or the Driftway and soon you will be enjoying the waves at Minot or Peggotty Beach. Afterwards stop into Scituate Harbor and take a stroll along the shops at Front Street and grab a bite to eat. Recently designated a Cultural Arts district, Scituate is also a sister city to Sucy-en-Brie in France and County Cork in Ireland, many events are offered throughout the year in an effort to encourage the exchange of cultural interaction between our towns. 46 WHAT S HAPPENING First Friday Nights On the first Friday of each month the lights are on late, as our shopkeepers keep their doors open and host special events with music, authors, artists, musicians, and special events. First Friday Nights is a harbor-wide year-round event from 4pm-9pm. First Friday Nights are a true celebration of the vibrant harbor community, and we look forward to seeing you there. Hit the harbor for music, special sales, great food and lots of fun! St. Patrick s Day Parade The St. Patrick s Day Parade is the largest on the South Shore and pays tribute to Scituate s Irish heritage and long held status as the Irish Riviera. The parade runs from the Gates Middle School on First Parish Rd. through downtown Scituate Harbor (Front Street) onto Jericho Road. To learn how you can support the parade, visit for information on the Mad Hatter s Ball, the Mayor s Race, the St. Pat s Plunge, and sponsorship opportunities! 46 Annual Egg Hunt Sponsored by the Friends of Scituate Recreation, the annual egg hunt is the Saturday before Easter, 10:00am at Widow s Walk Golf Course. Children ages 3-6 (must be accompanied by an adult). NO REGIS- TRATION REQUIRED. Bring your basket and get ready for FUN and a surprise visitor. Scituate Harbor Art Walk The first weekend in May, harbor shops and businesses host local arts, crafts, and music. Over 30 visiting artists, craftsmen and performers will be sprinkled throughout the harbor. As well as year round resident artists at Kjeld Mahoney Photography, Front Street Art Gallery, Silverstorm Jewelry, Beaucoup Beads Studio Jewelry, Expressions Coop Gallery, Kukstis Woodcarving, Native and much more. Pizza Palooza In early May, local restaurants compete for best pizza in three different categories. It is an all you can eat event that showcases Scituate businesses, their pizza and desserts. It is sponsored by the chamber of commerce. The chamber works with a class at the high school to run and promote the event. All proceeds go to college scholarships for Scitaute seniors. Memorial Day Parade Beginning at 10:30am on Memorial Day, the parade starts at Scituate Town Hall and ends at Lawson Park. A memorial service will be held at Lawson Park following the parade, including speakers, a reading of the names of Scituate Veterans who have passed, playing of taps and a rifle salute.

47 WHAT S HAPPENING Arts Alive with Plein Air Scituate Art Association On June 10th and 11th, the Scituate Arts Association invites artists of all ages - youths to seniors - and skills - novice to professional - to experience Plein Air Painting in Scituate Harbor and the surrounding areas including Lighthouse Point, Cole Parkway, the Marina area and Young s Boatyard. Demonstrations by several local artists are planned at various times and locations. The public will have an opportunity to vote for their choice in The People s Choice Award. Classic Cars in the Harbor This summer the Scituate Harbor Business Association with the help Frank Nash and his vintage car owners, sponsors "Classic Cars in the Harbor". This free event was a great success last summer and we are looking forward to this summer s show. Located at Cole Parkway and Otis Place, these classic cars will be featured one Thursday a month during the months of June, July, and August, from 6pm-8pm. Knights of Columbus Carnival The Scituate Knights of Columbus have held this carnival annually for over 50 years, and the event has become one of Scituate s cherished traditions, a favorite among children and adults alike. This 5-day event runs from 7pm-11pm each night, with fireworks displays each of the last two nights (Friday and Saturday). This year s carnival will be held from July 11th-15th. 47

48 WHAT S HAPPENING Bandstand Performances The Scituate Harbor Cultural District sponsors performances at the Morrill Bandstand in the harbor Saturdays during the summer (July and August). Come join us for Music, dance, comedians and more... approximate start time 6pm. Bring your own chairs! Heritage Days Each year, with the help of many volunteers, the Scituate Chamber of Commerce proudly presents Scituate Heritage Days. The annual event combines live music and entertainment, artisan crafts, kid s activities and historical site visits for one of the South Shore s biggest and most anticipated outdoor events of the summer. The first weekend of August, visitors can enjoy many events, activities, and music venues that Scituate Heritage Days has become famous for. Fall for Scituate The emphasis is on community when North Scituate Village hosts Fall for Scituate: A Hometown Celebration, every October. The annual ChowderFest, starring the traditional 48 New England favorite, created by the area s top restaurants and caterers, is a major highlight of the event, which also features entertainment, an invitational artisan show, special merchant activities and lots of community involvement. Halloween in the Harbor Each year on Halloween, the businesses open their doors to Trick O Treaters from 4:00-5:30pm. The harbor is transformed into haunted houses and decorated storefronts. Costumed kids, parents, business owners and even dogs fill Front Street and Cole Parkway. Front Street is blocked off and patrolled for safety by the Scituate Police and sponsored by the Scituate Chamber of Commerce. The event is put on by the Scituate Harbor Business Association, and all of the Scituate Harbor businesses. Holidays in the Harbor The holiday stroll covers three days of merriment at Scituate Harbor. Santa Claus arrives by boat, there are Clydesdale horses, Victorian carolers, a tree lighting, face painting, tattoos, music and entertainment, hot chocolate, Mrs. Claus, hay rides and a gingerbread house contest.

Polar Express The popular holiday train ride to the North Pole leaves from the Greenbush Commuter Rail Station on Sunday. During this 60- to 90minute train ride, children will be entertained with the reading of the classic story of The Polar Express, have mild and cookies, sing Christmas carols, and be visited by Santa s Elves, Frosty, Rudolph, and the big man in red, Santa, and Mrs. Claus. 49
